Well Fjortoft has just Twatted that a 'reliable' connection to the club has Lambert the frontrunner. Personally, this looks a bit like going for Martinez and McLeish to me - far from similar aims, they look like very different directions. Lambert plays short-term, pragmatic football, whereas OGS looks to want to build something. That's why I'd prefer him.

I reckon Kendrick's sources are a bit more accurate. He still reckons OGS the fave.

Does he think this based on a source though? I thought he just 'reckoned' it.

He has been told that OGS made an "extremely positive impression" last week. So I am sure whoever told him that would have led him to think OGS  "remains prominent in the claret and blues’ thinking."

However, it's possible that promoted him from 'outside bet' to 'first backup'. I hope I'm wrong, but Fjortoft has seemed relatively reliable.

I don't doubt JAF on the norweigian side. But Kendrick doesn't get too much wrong that often. So when it comes to Villa sources I would lean towards Kendrick. But it is quite possible no one has a scooby about what is going on.

Indeed, the board have been so secretive they haven't even told themselves what's going on.

I've softened a bit towards Lambert, because he has brought through some young players at Norwich. But I desperately hope he's the backup option for Solskjaer, not the other way round.

The board need to "reinvigorate" the club. Their words. They will be well aware of how Villa fans will have reacted to OGS. Even though Lambert or Martinez may well equally competent candidates the sheer momentum that the Solskjaer link has created will be influential. They are right to complete their discovery process, and the Villa job has become a little more fashionable again so they need to ensure they have all the information they need. In the, all things being equal Solskjaer will be the man. Too much has been written said for it not to be.

For me, it really doesn't matter if it is PL or OGS. Both will play to win, both will have a desire to achieve, both will probably improve results and both will get us scoring goals.

It is as close to a Win-Win as you can get.

Short-term. I just feel Lambert is a short-term pragmatist, who won't play the sort of football which, generally, has a higher glass ceiling than the various varieties of MON-ball.

I dont buy the MON parallel. Lambert had bought young players like Pilkington, Howson etc. He plays the ball on the floor a lot more than MON and understands european possession tactics from his time at Dortmund.

I think the fact that he is self depricating and has worked under MON tarrs him with the same brush. I don't think they are that similar at all.

Well, he describes MON as his other greatest influence in management, and his Norwich were, at various times, fourth-lowest for completed passes and in the top four for number of long balls played. I'm not saying he can't change, just that his instinct does seem towards short-term pragmatism, and I feel we need to develop more of a club philosophy of playing than simply "who do we mark this time" sort of stuff.

I'm being a bit straw-man here, but remember McLeish promising attacking football. Even if Lambert promises a possession game, there's nothing in his past to suggest he'd do it.

Perhaps Fjortoft's source is just slightly behind with his info?

The general feeling up until Friday was that Lambert was first choice and a good one at that.  Then Ole came into the picture and, by all accounts, greatly impressed them.

So if his insider was told this prior to Friday it doesn't make his ITK wrong, just old.

I understand the MON/Lambert thing, but I think it's a bit facile.

After all, I seem to remember a lot of people on here gnashing at their bras whenever some journalist compared MON to Clough. The similarities are there, in both cases, but I reckon they're presentational at most.

Yes, but look at the pedigree of the two that he brought in.  Pedigree chumps!!

Very harsh on a man that has won what Houllier has.

He was years past his best, which is why he was shuffling papers for the French FA.  And it showed.

True but it was pretty much on a par with Newcastle, whose style is pretty.

I am similar to you and I would prefer OGS. But I would be delighted with PL. He has done fantastic with Norwich and maybe his style isn't pass, pass, pass BUT neither is the European Champions' ;-)

But I am with you. I would love it to be OGS.

As far as the Lambert v Ole argument goes, I'd say Lambert in the money in your hand while OGS is the box that may contain the jackpot....... or the exact sum of fuck-all.

Sadly, I'd have been happy to take that gamble last year, but our stock is so low at the moment I'm not sure we can gamble it dropping further.

See I'd counter the last part of your argument. I think our stock has dropped so low that now is the ideal time to take a gamble, it's very unlikely that whoever we appoint can do as badly as Mcleish. It's the perfect scenario for Solskjaer to be our manager.
