It is a gamble, but if it is OGS then let's get behind him from day 1.

I hope he has Fergie's work ethic and discipline and we know Ole is a born winner.

You could say he was a born substitute, happy to sit on the bench rather than strive to be number one.

Top ten finishes, European football and a cup final... I'd snap someone's hand off if they offered that now.

For the first time in years I've just put it on, not because I think its the truth but just to hear what they were saying. Fuck me that station is shit.

Agreed but I did enjoy them slagging off Downing earlier

If this does actually come to pass, it's a gamble.

You can make the link with Fergie and how that must influence his thinking.
But the Scottish Manager played under Fergie too - and that didn't make him braver or more attack minded when it came to the crunch.  Ultimately it depends on the personality of the individual, not who they've learned under.

It could also put us into that bracket of go nowhere clubs for whom basking in the reflected glory of a big name ex United player is the only way we generate any headlines:  On appointment and for two games a season. For a club like Aston Villa, that isn't -and should never be- what we're about. It wasn't so long ago that we hated them.  And they disliked us. Aston Villa v Manchester United fixtures (from about the 50's on up to the noughties) used to have an edge to them, and were often the highlight nationally of the weekend set of fixtures whenever it was played.  I accept that they are light years ahead of us now, I wouldn't be deluded enough to call them rivals anymore. But do we really want to be patronised by their daytripping hordes?   Become their 'second' club, in true small club style -as we provide no threat whatsoever?

Against all that, after having the enthusiasm pumped out of the place on an industrial scale under the last chancer, the very least we should expect is a modern approach to playing matters.  Something most of us have been calling for for a while now.  It would seem even more of a risk if he's not coming in under a DoF, but it looks like he has a sizable team working with him.

Someone wrote "it's not where you've come from, it's where you're taking us" and I think this applies equally to OGS. Until you give someone the chance you just never know where it might go. It would certainly be exciting and you've got to admire Lerner as appointing him would take a massive amount of bottle.

think is, that applies to a lesser or bigger extent to our last 2 managerial appointments. if he fucks up again on these gambles, then i don't think anyone will trust him again to get it right. His record so far is piss poor really.

I think he will be a great appointment. Seems to have a great attacking footballing philosophy, prefers 4-3-3 with an attacking slant and gets his teams to pass and move, which will be a novelty after this season. I think it will be very important, if he does come, that he is allowed to bring his coaching staff, Mark Dempsey & Richard Hartis, with him. Both were part of ManYoo's youth coaching set up and both are totally invested in OGS's vision. His appointment makes a lot of sense, I imagine Faulkner & Lerner witnessed his reserve team beat us in that reserve league final and admired the way he brought on the youngsters at United.

I'm amazed so many people are blindly excited by this.

He may about to progress into the next Jose Mourinho, but wouldn't you like to see some fucking proof first?

After a year of watching McLeish's anti-football I get excited about the thought of a dump! However, hearing his philosophies about football on that video ought to excite all Villa fans after the crap we've played all year.

It could go tits up, fair chance it will, at least next season might be fun.

Hope he brings back Jean to the first team.

I think Fergie feels so bad for recommending Big Eck last time, he's making amends and is letting have his successor on a work placement for a few years until he retires.

This is either genius or football suicide but I'm excited if it happens - time to wake up the giant. :)

Odds just keep tumbling on OGS while they are lengthening on the other serious contenders such as Lambert and Martinez.

Are people suggesting John Gregory was a success now? I thought spunking loads of money on players with no sell-on value, finishing 6th and losing in cup finals was viewed as a capital offence these days.

Compared to GT mark II, O'Leary, Houllier and McLeish he was a success. If you like, our second most successful manager in the past 14 years.

It was more a reference to how some slag off MONs record tbh.

This potential appointment makes me feel nervous and excited at the same time.

Maybe Scandanavian is the new Scottish in terms of great English managers.

I admit I know nothing about OGS as a coach. Bit worried about him making the step up to the PL without a DoF to support him on the footballing side of the club off-field. How is he in terms of defence? If he brought Martin Laursen in to sort our woeful defending that would make a great coaching team.

Looks like ogs is flying to brum in the morning, cant see him turning the job down in all honesty and although i prefer lambert im sure we will all unite behind ogs and welcome him to our great club.

My worries are whether hes tough enough to deal with the problem players and not a soft touch and also whether he sees us a stepping stone to old trafford- but i guess if he does end up there he will have done a great job for us beforehand.

Whether lambert or others rejected the chance we dont know but at least ogs will bring a lot more to the party than eck!
