After the good feeling that came with getting rid of McLeish, I'm now feeling that although I wouldn't mind any of the candidates that we seem to be linked with and could reasonably expect to attract (Martinez, Rodgers, Lambert, Poyet, Di Matteo...), none of them really fill me with that much excitement, either.

I suppose of that bunch, my preference would just about be for Lambert, although there's not much in it.

Apart from Mad Mick McCarthy, who could possibly be any worse?

Ian Taylor said on Sky yesterday that we had to get it "spot on" this time, whilst I agree totally with that I still have a certain dread as to who we actually end up with.
It would be cruel beyond words to be relieved of that ginger monster only to see him replaced with another dinosaur like McCarthy (in fact experience should tell Lerner to rule out any candidate who's name stars with "Mc")
I would love to see them just go for it with the likes of Zola or Di canio with a number 2 like Clarke and attack every team who comes to Villa park!
Here's hoping.......................................................................................

yep.  complete ban on anyone who was born, played or managed north of the border or Ireland. Its the only way.
Not born north of the border or glasses? that's The Proclaimers out then.
We are slowly narrowing down your choices Greg.

I think people are being a bit harsh on Di Matteo. Are people saying if Chelsea win the CL (not that they will) then he had nothing to do with it? From what I remember he brought up WBA playing good passing football, was unlucky to get sack probably because WBA wanted to go for safe option when Hodgson was available. My dad is a wba fan and he was suprised as I when he got sack. Oh he's won the F.A cup. He pulled off some brilliant results too, Napoli in C.L? Maybe he let Chelsea play how they want to. But maybe he deserves credit for acknowledging that doing what AVB wanted to do was too extreme in too short of a time.

Well, exactly. I'm fairly sure that any of the candidates would get us to mid-table fairly comfortably, so I'm trying to decide which of them would have the extra to get us higher than that.

After this season, a mid-table finish in 2012-13 would do me just fine.

Adjust expectations accordingly to manager and players bought/sold. You never know!

I'm still hearing that Roberto Di Matteo is the preferred choice of those at Villa Park who matter. Also preliminary talks have been held.
He's not my first choice but I could live with it.
And by the way, I wont say on here where I get my info from, but it is a fairly decent source.
Apparently Randy is due in the UK on Friday and an announcement will be made early next week.
As I say, if it's wrong don't shoot the messenger.

Randy arrived this morning.

Who is this Step Forward bloke? Is he a cousin of that Stollen Bakecake that Dogheads have hired?

Di Matteo is not a good manager. Chelsea's run of form has everything to do with Di Matteo letting Lampard, Terry et al play they want to rather than any tactical nouse. They've just been playing how Mourinho had them play.
Totally agree.
Giving the power back to the players is what has given Robbie (as they call him) the performances that were missing under AVB.
Not the man for us.

That doesn't tie-in with TLP's post, what would be the point in arriving now when he wouldn't be able to speak to the bloke till probably at least next Monday?
