Very good piece from not 606.
Leeds aren't former European Champions! They've only won five major honours in their history to boot.

Villa are a different kettle of fish. Their history goes right back to actually being the club that gave the world league football (their then Chairman, William McGregor, created the world's first football league in 1888). They are the only "old" club (founder member of the original league) of English football to have been Champions of Europe. The heir to the British throne, the British Prime Minister and the Governor of the Bank of England are all supporters of the club, they hold a unique position as the the original major football club of England. Villa were the most trophied club in England for an unbroken spell of seven decades (1905-1978). Unlike the "new" clubs that rose on from the 1950's/60's onwards Villa have never relied on media backing or buying success. They're a huge, genuinely historic club with a unique place in the history of the game. They are the major club of the UK's second largest city...

If Lerner is serious, once more, about investing in success (not "buying success" like either Manchester club, Chelsea etc.) then many managers would be tempted by the challenge of re-establishing Villa to the top of the game.

Gone right off lambert. Its the MON thing i guess. Not so much that i think he's a clone of him, more Lerner does.

Greg - have you watched Norwich? They play nothing at all like a MON team. For starters they are not a counter attacking team by nature. They had a pretty decent home record because they attack the opposition. Lambert played for MON at Celtic - so what? Lambert has shown that he not only has a plan B, but a C as well if he needs it. We all know MON had a plan A, and if that didn't work, he'd go to plan A again.

Have I mis-read this thread title? It's not 'Who do you want as Liverpool's next manager?' Fuck 'em.

Fair point but it could impact on who we get. I wish our guys would just go and get their man. Look at Liverpool, Kenny's barely left the building and they've made an approach for a manger.

Two days before the first complaint. We're getting better.

I really didn't mean it as a complaint Dave, more a utopian wish we get who we want and Liverpool don't beat us to the punch.

I would be very surprised if we're in the same market as Liverpool.

Let's be honest Greg you won't like anyone we hire or are linked with. That's why you can't come up with more than "look abroad" for who you'd want.  ;)

i'm not enthused by the list of candidates up top true, though it's probably reasonably accurate and beggers can't be choosers given who wants to work with nowt to spend. could be a lot worse i guess. me i'd go with Rodgers out of them. I'm not sure he'd do better than lambert but at least he'd try to get some of our players passing, and i'd rather have players that suit the manager rather than a manager who suits the players.

I can't deny it worries me a lot about him having read about the way he manages and sets his side up.
I couldn't disagree more. The only comparison I see is they are good man managers. Lambert is far more flexible with his sides formations and the rotation of players.

I'm sure Lerner hates O'Neill more than you do. Just because two people wear glasses, doesn't mean they're exactly the same. See also: Sarah Palin and Gandhi. Both wear glasses, but they are different people.

heh. its not the glasses or the visual resemblence, its the worry we're after him because the board think he can get something out of Dunne, collins Hutton etc... My arguement is they're beyond redemption and should be shown the door sharpish. I don't want a manager who will work with them basically.

Sees the players 2-3 days a week, aloof with the press, likes a big man up top, concedes possession to focus on fairly direct, albeit effective football.

I like Lambert, and think he would do a good job for sure, but think in the long run people like Rodgers will be more successful.

Unless offers come in they're here for 12 months at worst.  If he can utilise them, presuming they aren't sold, then that's a positive in my book.

Lambert seems better at having a plan (b) than Rodgers. That's quite an un-O'neillish trait.

It remains to be seen whether Rodgers can replicate the success he's had with Swansea somewhere where the club hasn't been primed for playing that way for 10 years or so before he turned up.

One thing Lambert seems capable of is switching formations effectively when facing different sides. Or even during games. How alien a concept has that been down B6 in recent years?

Rodgers has come right in on the early odds for Liverpool so could well be him. And lets face it, he could do a great job there.
So has AVB. It is just a measure of where the money is going.
