I don't understand the negative feeling to Martinez, it smacks of a complete misreading of the situation.

He himself recently said "I did not turn down Aston Villa for football reasons". He felt he had work still to do at Wigan and owed them a debt of gratitude. It's not like he's done a Mark Hughes, is it? To say that he should have instantly dropped all obligations he felt towards anyone else and jumped straight to Villa is Liverpool-esque arrogance. We all got angry when Downing jumped ship with so little gratitude, but we're annoyed Martinez didn't do the same to come to us? That's a blatant double standard.

If anything, his actions last year make him precisely the kind of man I do want at Aston Villa. He's professional, he's honourable, he feels a sense of obligation towards people other than himself. Frankly, compare that to Lambert who has a career history of jumping ship at the first opportunity (I'm not blaming him as such, just saying that he's acted less honourably than Martinez).

How do you misread a guy that's just about managed to keep Wigan in the Prem for two years? How do you misread no improvement? How do you misread a guy whose team starts playing in April? If he has a top half finish with Wigan next year then he has a case, until then, on the face of it, he hasn't improved them and shouldn't be in the frame for a bigger job. QED.
That

So a long wait and Lerner presents..... Martinez. Can't see it myself

Don't think it will be a long wait this time.

Yeah i get that feeling from Lerners statement that they cant piss around this time. Need to get a guy in fast to assess situation and ship out the deadwood. Hope Lerners also been kept informed orf who has been letting our club down and making sure the new guy gets them out of our club pronto.

Isn't the choice about the following ? :-
1. Take a risk on an up and coming manager who has never won anything but who MAY step up and eventually achieve something at the club over time, but is as yet, unproven. This would include Lambert, Rodgers and possibly Martinez.
So a gamble that may pay off, but could just as easily mean that we continue to coast along without ever really pushing on.
2. Go for someone older, wiser who has already won things in the game, but may come with their own agenda or baggage. This would include Ranieri, Benitez, maybe AVB ?.

Is there a 3rd choice/group, of managers who are neither, but could be a possibility, to include Moyes and suchlike

For me, i think I'd prefer someone from option 2 but I really don't know. it's a tough decision the board has to make and they HAVE to get it right this time.

That said, at the moment, I' m still just enjoying getting rid of the Scottish one.

Is Collymore hinting at Hyppia and is it the real Ray Wilkins who has thrown his hat into the ring?

Wilkins as someone like Poyet or AVB number 2 yes, but not on his own, too nice a fella!

Hypia is an interesting one as did his badges a while ago, and you would think would possibly be the type to work with a DOF.

Glenn Hoddle should be seriously considered for me. Knows the European game inside out, plays good football, good experience and a progressive thinker about the game.

We need to look beyond the managers who are currently flavour of the month and appoint someone who can help us build the right structure for the club going forward and bring the best out of the younger players, something he has been doing successfully in Spain.

Someone like Wilkins as Number 2 would also be a good shout.

Hoddle wouldn't be a bad choice for a DoF role if we went for a young up and coming manager but I think his time as a premier league manager has gone.

As the dingles and Southampton about Hoddle. Infact, only Spurs and probably Swindon fans have nice things to say about him. Massive ego,and a bit of a cock!

I'd prefer Rodgers (good season, good football, but also had a very strong rep as a coach before he went to Swansea) or lambert (pretty stellar success, though I think a bit too like MoN in style of play?) than Martinez.

I'd love villa to play with the composure and quality Wigan showed towards the end of the season. He's consistently had to sell his best players too. But his transfer record. Is pretty mixed and Wigan were abject for half the season

The issue with a young up and coming manager with his own ideas is how the likes of dunne, Collins and warnock will react. Houllier struggled with that and I could see them being a real problem for the likes of Martinez or Lambeth who've never really been at a club with egos like that. Lambert at least has as a player.

I am really not sure, the board have made some horrendous decissions, they will not want to make another one, they may think perhaps the fans need a favorite, or go for a safe bet, I would like to see what happens at Chelsea after the final. (would he come to us though)
Edit and I do not want Lennon anywhere near our club.

Seriously though Matt, who gives a flying f**k how Dunne, Collins & Warnock would react? They should be shipped off as soon as possible. A trio of bad apples as we all know, get rid and let's start fresh.
AVB is my choice, give him a vision and a five year plan and I think he'd buy into it.

So happy the doom & gloom as been lifted off our great club today!

No matter who we approach they all will probably be asking what finance is available.  I may have missed it but do we know the answer?

If the answer is we are solely relying on some money raised from sales and the future is mainly based on the academy then it might be that Kevin Mac comes into the frame.

Dunne, Collins and Warnock are all out of contract in a year, so even if we can't ship them out it's a short term problem anyway.

If fan power made the club look away from McClaren and eventually fan power got rid of Mcleish

If Lambert is the fans favourite now and we get him but it does not work out

Do we have to boo ourselves?
