I'm quite surprised at the anti Martinez idea. After all Rogers' success with Swansea surely can be attributed to the foundations Martinez put down at the club before moving on. What he's achieving with Wigan is pretty fantastic year in year out, while playing good football.

I'm not sure who I want to be honest. I wouldn't be upset if Martinez or Lambert came rocking up at VP.

Wigan don't play good football. They attempt to pass it about and get cut to ribbons; they're the new Coventry City, constantly dicing with relegation. Martinez could only get them playing for the last month of the season. As crazy as I am, I expect more from a Villa side.

Ranieri would be an exciting gamble

Ranieri would be a total disaster.

It has to be one of those options for me. This 2 in premier league and 2 out of work is an interesting one. But lets be realistic, AVB is not going to come without a big budget and did not cover himself in glory at Chelsea, so for me we have to gamble on one of the ones above.

If going for one of them, it would be Rodgers for me. I like his approach and ideas to football, keeping possession and trying to win the the right way.

How about Poyet??

My Brighton-supporting chum is cacking himself at this prospect...

I've heard this today.

Id like to see Malky Mackay given a chance. Hes done a brilliant job at Cardiff this season on a shoestring budget ( i seem to recall he only had 10 playing staff on the books when he took over last summer )..Cardiff have played attacking football and where unlucky in the league cup final.

Paul Lambert for me, think he could get the best out of what we currently have and would bring in what we need in terms of organising the side.

I think Martinez after last years public no thank you is probably a non starter.

It will be Alan Curbishley if Dowie turns us down.

I have no faith in Lerner and co making the correct appointment.

I'm not sure who I want to be honest. I wouldn't be upset if Martinez or Lambert came rocking up at VP.

Martinez got Swans from Lg 1 to Championship then jumped at the first chance of a 'bigger' job! Rodgers took over and took them to the Prem, having made a hash of Reading previously. Lambert and Rodgers both finished above Martinez in their first season in the Prem who now has two seasons of relegation fighting as his claim to fame (what you call 'pretty fantastic' I think shows him up at this point, but now that he's had time he may go on to better if he stays at Wigan, I'll give him that). Therefore, I see them as better options.

Given that Rodgers failed with a mixed squad inherited at Reading and has done well with a footballing one inherited at Swansea, Lambert gets my vote because he has the proven experience with a mixed bag, which lets face it, is what he'd inherit at Villa.

For me, in terms of choices in order on the above reasoning, it would be Lambert, Rodgers, Martinez.

Id forgot Lambert led Wycombe to the Carling Cup semi-final beating 2 Prem teams on the way and drew 1-1 with chelski in the semi.

Poyet has done a decent job at Brighton. Be good to have him and then perhaps a more experienced director of football doing the transfers, etc. Not comoli though...

If you look at the league table for the second half of the season, Wigan would be 7th, Villa 19th.

I can't bring myself to be excited this time. Not after last summer's twitter-fest.

Rodgers would be my first choice but I think lambert might be a safer bet.

I haven't watched norwich enough to know quite how direct they are. But I prefer my football smooth and silky and think 433 may well be the way to go.

Rodgers would need time and patience though. Not sure if he'd get that.

Whoever takes the job has a big job on their hands. We won't be troubling the top 6 for awhile. I hope most fans recognise this. A good proportion seem to like to grumble no matter what

I don't see how Martinez avoiding relegation for the third season running qualifies him for the job at Villa. There's major work to do here and I just don't think he was what it takes.

Whoever we get it will be wrong. We can't draw the bigger names, the out of work lot of Benitez's ilk are over rated which leaves the Lambert, Rodgers types, who I could only ever see transforming us into consistent mid tablers a la Everton. That said I do place the financial security and continued existence of our club more highly than a bit of silverware.

My mates a Norwich fan and he thinks Lambert is brilliant. He would be devastated if he left.

I'd like Martinez but I think the safer bet is Lambert.

i'm lovin seeing you argue the case for Martinez even if its only in a luke warm way after our 'debates' over him last season.

its amazing how much can change by having an absolute rubbish manager for a season.
