What about Raneri (sp), available, premier league experience, not going to get a job with any of the euro greats and plays football

Why on earth do we need a DIrector of Football? Has any club in the PL ever prospered with a DoF? Does it work?

What we need is a chairman who pays more attention to things (the one we've got will be fine, if we get the keen chairman of two years ago back, rather than this year's absentee landlord), and a CEO who isn't demonstratively way out of his depth.

As it happens, I've very little faith in their ability to pick the right man. We'll probably end up with Mick McCarthy. I certainly wouldn't be remotely surprised to hear they're making the "must have PL experience" mistake all over again.

DoF - well Mourinho done ok at Chelsea with Arnesen as DoF. Provided the boundaries are defined and understood and the DoF is appointed first then there should be no problem. It even worked with Sillet and Curtis at Cov during their best ever spell

Okay, so let's pose this question then:

Who do you want as DoF at Villa?
Dave Woodhall to let the board know what it means to be custodians of Villa
Hoddle and Ray Wilkins to sort it out on the pitch

No thanks. Not any of those.

hasn't he been fired like a hundred times? That's the only thing you hear about him nowadays. Another bloke who is well past it.

Someone like Wilkins would actually make a decent DOF I reckon. The alternative would be to find someone from abroad, maybe even like Numan who has been scouting for us that is interested in the development side of things. There must be plenty of good quality people who don't want to manage but would relish a more strategic role at a club. Then have a manager in the Martinez style.

I see Shrewsbury have been promoted, they might have a promising manager we could take.

If you mean out of work when you say 'available', then maybe not, but I'd class both Rodgers and Lambert as suitable and obvious.  That having been said, both Houllier and Mcleish took us by surprise, so we can discount the obvious bit.  And yes - also 'suitable' when you consider AM!

Wilkins in some capacity is an interesting idea, but his talents seem to be coaching and helping an overseas manager.  We alread have good coaches, so I'd say he'd be a suitable No 2 to  foreign manager, if that's the way Randy goes.

None of the old school for me - the Rainieri's and Ericssons. Will only try and spend and earn cash etc. Need to get Rodgers or Lambert or the next one of that ilk who can develop the footballing side of the club and own it. This will hopefully develop loyalty like Moyes has to Everton. The manager will need to be given a free hand on all footballing matters.
