The problem with a Southgate in a DOF role is that he could become a political threat to a manager/Head coach. Say a new manager got off to a bad start and we were struggling come Christmas, Southgate would be waiting in the wings. Former villa captain, former manager, working above the manager....How long before he started undermining said unpopular manager and the Holte End started calling for him to replace the manager?

It could be like Woy and Dalglish at Anfield. Just throwing it out there. Personally, I'd have no problem getting Southgate on board in some capacity. He always seemed like a thinking man and always gave his all for villa (when he wasn't submitting transfer requests). That's more than can be said for many others of that era.

Any ex-manager in a DOF role will always carry that threat to the manager in the job.  The exception being people like Arnesen, who were never, and never will be, managers.

Good points. Not a Villa man and no obvious interest in management (again) have to be two important criteria.

Southgate has said that he does not want to manage again.  Whether his ego would dictate otherwise if the crowd started begging is clearly open for debate.

Didn't Alan Shearer say he wouldn't manage Newcastle?

Didn't SGT say he had no interest in managing when he came back onboard?

If there's any chance of Lambert being the next manager he presumably won't want to risk putting us into the Championship in the final game of this season by beating us...

...yeah, but on another day I’m pretty sure he also said it would be his dream to manage Newcastle.  However I do understand your point re the emptiness of the quote.  In Southgate’s defence he has actively gone out if his way to get the FA development job and is rarely linked with other clubs, which suggests his agent is not touting him around to the media and other clubs (not yet anyway).

No, I think that is the bloke who sits on the side of the pitch whilst we're playing.
