As with players, I'm always wary of one-season wonder managers, but Lambert or Rodgers would be safe bets for me.

If we aint got any money, give Kevin Macdonald and Syd the job

I don't think they want to be managers. If they did they would have gone for another job by now.

Mac wanted the forest job , he did not even get an interview.

Think Haughton would be a good choice, and it would be a chance to piss our neighbours off also ;D  Outside of that Martinez would also be worth a punt as he is just getting better with more experience and I think he would work well with our younger players.
Hughton will stay at the STy, I would guess.
Why on earth would Martinez be more likely to join us this year than last?

If RL decides to get rid - which is a massive assumption - the options will be even more constrained than last year, IMO. Many managers already in the P'ship will look at the Villa job as a poisoned chalice or a sideways move. Thus, RL will have to either source a replacement from overseas, bring in one of those currently out of work or go into the lower reaches.

The choices are not great.

Plenty of decent coaches abroad that would come to us purely because of the payrise that it would represent so as long as we drop the premiership experience bollocks then we could do well.

Ray Haughton? Or Houghton?
Or do you mean Hughton.

Sorry.

Wasn't Haughton off the Vicar of Dibley?

Can people cite one single instance of the director of football model working in this country? I have to say it completely escapes me

That sort of misses the point, for me. In this country, some clubs have attempted to combine the DoF with a traditional British-style manager. You can't do the thing half-arsed like that - if you're going to have that structure in a club, you need to go all the way, and hire head coaches, sporting directors, heads of scouting etc, who all have equal say - not subservient to the manager, in other words.

I think that Mourinho fellow did ok at Chelsea with Frank Arnesen as DoF. Like anything if the boundaries are set and agreed by all parties in advance there is no problem. To be fair Houllier was really a wannabe DoF and one of the  may problems was his hire (GaryMac) was antagonstic to players (probably under Houllier's direction) and with zero prior connection to Villa then it was doomed to fail. Pleat did a similar role with Jol at Spurs.

I am sure Syd dont want to be manager, not so sure about MacDonald. With the emphasis on youth, they would be ideal IMHO

We all have our views, but it comes down to who will come and how much our current owner will back them per season and results. We have a very good youth/reserve set up etc, the scouting needs to be better though.

My first choice with backing would be Ray Wilkins and HIS coaching staff/team.

Claudio Ranieri (out of work presently) or David Moyes (taken cashless Everton as far as he can?).

There'd be no point though without funds being made available - over to you, Mr Lerner.

Ranieri, Di Matteo, Villas-Boas, Martinez.

I don't care which one, just throw money at them until they come.

Suprises me that he wasn't given an interview. He's managed the team before and didn't do a terrible job; I think the 6-0 defeat at Newcastle is a blotch on the record that's been blown way out of proportion.

Benitez, Martinez, Lambert, Villas-Boas, Rodgers, Di Matteo (if he doesn't get the Chelsea job). These would be my top choices. Benitez is the best of them.

Left field choices would be: Ranieri, Hughton, Poyet, Wilkins, Southgate (!),  Laursen (!)

I tell you what, I may over-idolize him as a player, but I'm convinced that within the next ten years Martin Laursen will return to B6 as manager. Currently managing in the Danish second division East if I'm not mistaken.
