Can people cite one single instance of the director of football model working in this country? I have to say it completely escapes me

That sort of misses the point, for me. In this country, some clubs have attempted to combine the DoF with a traditional British-style manager. You can't do the thing half-arsed like that - if you're going to have that structure in a club, you need to go all the way, and hire head coaches, sporting directors, heads of scouting etc, who all have equal say - not subservient to the manager, in other words.

If we aint got any money, give Kevin Macdonald and Syd the job

I don't think they want to be managers. If they did they would have gone for another job by now.

They might not get to stay as they are if a new bloke comes in and decides he wants a clear-out. I reckon Sid would jump at the chance to be manager of Villa, but wouldn't necessarily be willing to give up his current Villa job to take a chance managing somewhere like Aldershot.

He is, as far as I am aware, happy as he is, and his family is Sutton based. A manager only has a short shelf-llfe.

Haven't Spurs got one?

Spurs, Chelsea, Citeh, Newcastle all have staff between management and owners that identify players, I believe.

We really need to get away from the tired old management format we've got in place now. Player recruitment has moved on from signing the better players from the clubs below us and selling our better players to the ones above us.

Get a quality coach. If they have to have Premier League experience then Hodgson or Martinez are both flexible coaches who spend their time on the training pitch.

You'd imagine they'd know this with the 'Ajax approach' they're talking about and a crop of technically capable kids. Why on earth we've this scrappy manager I'll never know.

Am I making it up or has Paul Faulkner talked of this type of management model in the past?

Has never and would never work here. See Dennis Wise.

Who was pretty much replaced with Graham Carr.

And since he's been in this position he's been credited with the signings of:
Gosling, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Ba, Marveux, Cabaye, Obertan, Santon and Cisse.

Working above two different coaches.

A system like this is far more stable than we use currently. It'd enable us not to have a complete revamp whenever we change manager.

Swansea, Wigan, Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle all do it and have had relative success in recent years.

I'd like to see it given a chance but think it might be too imaginative a move for us I'm afraid. Would Curbishley/Bruce/McCarthy be willing to work with a Director of Football?

Think Haughton would be a good choice, and it would be a chance to piss our neighbours off also ;D  Outside of that Martinez would also be worth a punt as he is just getting better with more experience and I think he would work well with our younger players.
