I agree, I'd rather we stuck with Weimann than buy Doyle.  The young Austrian is the only one of our youth who I think will make it.

Doyle was a real goal getter for 2-3 seasons then seemed to have all goal scoring instinct removed by Mick. Probably asked him to play in the hole too often.

The whole point of getting another forward in is so we dont have to rely on Bent alone so I see no sense in buying a striker who doesnt score that often.

It isn't the whole point.

It's also about getting the balance of the team right, somebody who can do a lot of the leg work and occupy defenders to create space for Bent to play in, somebody who can hold the ball up to allow the midfield to support, somebody who can act as an outlet when we're under pressure etc etc.

Yes, I know. But you still have the problem that if Bent isnt playing for whatever reason we have no alternative and will struggle to score especially if our whole set up is geared towards providing service to Bent. We would be too predictable and easily neutralised.

I agree with you in the type of role we need but the answer isnt Kevin Doyle because we would still need that player to contribute goals. Doyle isnt a goalscorer.
He really isnt much different to Heskey - a hardworking ineffective forward.
The thought of getting another player like this when we need so much more fills me with dread.

When you appoint a new manager then I think you just have to give him the benefit of the doubt. If he thinks Doyle is the man then so be it.

I've always liked Doyle. Admittedly I liked him more in the days when he used to get a few more goals than he seems to now.

I've got to say though Maz, he's much better than Heskey at the things Heskey is supposed to be quite good at. He's much more mobile, quicker, has better technique and lays it off better.

Agree.

I can see how he'd want Doyle, but then again, I see how Weimann could fill that role.  On a wider point (and not to do with Doyle) I'm also far from convinced that buying players from the lower leagues this week is going to change much either, but that's the manager's choice, and we've got to let him decide where to spend the money.

What does Doyle do that Gabby can't do?
Control the ball

Lerner must shudder when managers phone him up for a chat.  Before this summer, our recent signings have included Hutton, Makoun, Given, Jenas, Stevens, and N'Zogbia.  Not much in the way of value for money out of any of that lot.

Anybody see this? EL Ahmadi's take on his first home game...

Yes that read Karim's comments earlier and he is on the money. At one time on Saturday in the second half it was him and Vlaar starting all our attacking play.  These two and Holman came to us from successful teams where as the others are soiled from negativity from last season.

Agree 100%. He has a great attitude. That got us the winner v Fulham last season and with a bit of luck would have made the game interesting on Saturday in the last 5 minutes.

There is a few more from previous regimes you can add to that list. MON's and GH's signings of Heskey and Jean Mk 11 or whatever he is called. No blooming wonder Randy is not handing out his cheque book.

I have always liked Doyle, he can play, his passing and control are great he just does not find the net enough which would be a worry for me.

Thats why he stays in the states. That ball from Holman to Weimann was sublime. We need a couple off beasts through the spine same old Villa way too nice!

If Doyles donkey work were to get the best out of Bent, then it might be worth it for want of better options. I mean we're sorely lacking in some real, relentless grafting in some areas of the pitch. He's experienced too. I'd rather we got a decent big man to play up top mind you. I'd actually prefer Jones slightly more but he's more inconsistent. With Doyle you always get hard work and good general play. You don't always with Jones but when he's on it, he's very good.

I like Doyle. He's one of those players that gets way more grief than he deserves. Right now we need some experienced heads that can work their bollocks off. He's a very good player to link the midfield and attack, and for anyone that watched the game at the weekend you'll have noticed the universe sized hole between Bent and everyone else. Whether someone like Weimman can develop into that role remains to be seen. If one thing is apparent from the first couple of games is that we need some players in the mid to late 20's in amongst the younger lads. As much as I think Clark will make it, and I know he's taken a bashing of late we need Dunne fit again. I still want to see the back of Hutton and Warnock mind you.

We could ideally do with Dempsey and we should pull out all the stops to make it happen.
He's exactly the sort of player we need. We need some excitement to get some momentum going.

I'd also go after Huddlestone and maybe a potentially magical player from Real or Barca that's on the frniges and needs a loan spell somewhere.
As well as the couple of defenders we need of course.
