Whilst Doyle would be nowhere near the top of my wish list, I actually think he'd be a good partner for Bent. He runs forever and drags defenders with him, this would open up space for Bent. You'd just have to hope that all our chances fall to Bent.

I don't think we'll sign him mind.

If we could get Doyle for under £4m then I would be all for it. He links the midfield and front well and grafts his bollocks off. At worse he would do an ok job for us but given some of his previous, there is also the chance he could rediscover his goal scoring form and be crucial for us upfront with Bent

He's got three years left on his contract, so I reckon that Wolves would be after at least double that.  Not saying he's worth that mind, just the way that prices for average Premier League players seem to be going.

The whole point of getting another forward in is so we dont have to rely on Bent alone so I see no sense in buying a striker who doesnt score that often.

If the last couple of weeks have taught us anything, it's that Wolves are able to get Levy-esque fees for their good but not spectacular players.

Jordan Rhodes could be another Jermaine Beckford, but I guess that is the risk you have to take sometimes.

Lower league players can make the step up. Just not sure where we are at the moment, is the right way for Villa to go.

Realistically, what top class player would want to come to B6 currently?

Probably only those players desperate for Premiership football and wages, but not good enough to be attractive to a top 8 club.

Villa don't look an attractive proposition at present.

I'd like Doyle if the price was right. Although if Jarvis & Fletcher are anything to go by, Wolves will want £20mil!

Slightly weird, but I dreamt last night that Paul Lambert had a press conference and introduced David Beckham! I don't very often remember my dreams and they're rarely ever about football either.......

We desperately need players that can pass and move and create space in the last third. We have no attacking fluidity. I think Gabby can give us that when he has a good day. Ireland and nzog have failed to give us that. I think if we get the left back we know we need we have the defenders, once they get used to playing together, to keep us solidish at the back. We have to help bent with a bit of unpredictability. In my opinion that what we need, we are so predictable in attack at the moment...

And Doyle won't make us less predictable

Absolutely.
Fair play to their board for squeezing those ludicrous amounts out of Sunderland and West Ham.

It isn't the whole point.

It's also about getting the balance of the team right, somebody who can do a lot of the leg work and occupy defenders to create space for Bent to play in, somebody who can hold the ball up to allow the midfield to support, somebody who can act as an outlet when we're under pressure etc etc.

We should be doing all we can to try and sign Dempsey, I don't think that would be totally unbelievable and he would be a perfect addition. Him, a left back, a centre half and probably a winger as well.

Yes, I know. But you still have the problem that if Bent isnt playing for whatever reason we have no alternative and will struggle to score especially if our whole set up is geared towards providing service to Bent. We would be too predictable and easily neutralised.

I agree with you in the type of role we need but the answer isnt Kevin Doyle because we would still need that player to contribute goals. Doyle isnt a goalscorer.
He really isnt much different to Heskey - a hardworking ineffective forward.
The thought of getting another player like this when we need so much more fills me with dread.

In all honesty I can see Holman and Weimann providing most of the things you listed.  Holman in the build up to the chance where weimann hit the post showed exactly what he can bring with the holdup play, turn and timing of the pass, Weimann showed what he can bring with a very smart run and was unlucky to hit the post and even more unlucky that Bent didn't finish from the rebound.
