Just spotted this on f365:

"The Daily Mail reports Villas-Boas will tell a number of players to do one, as he tries to make room for a striker.

The paper reports: 'David Bentley, Jermaine Jenas, Sebastien Bassong, William Gallas and Kyle Naughton are all expected to be told they can leave this summer, while a number of the club's youngsters will be made available for loan.' "

Anyone on that list that tickles your fancy?

Is Naughton left footed..........

Seems strange that Spurs are set to tell Naughton he can leave when they were reportedly demanding £6m for him a month or so ago.

Naughton is right footed naturally but can play left back.

Bassong would be worth considering as well, but we have two promising left footed centre halves and he doesn't like playing LB.

I really think we should only sign a striker on loan (Carroll, Sturridge, Lukaku) or a short term deal (Klasnic, Owen). We would end up spending big on someone not particularly out of the ordinary - save the funds for a forward for when we're a position of strength like Newcastle did last year with Cisse.

IMO u need to be naturally left footed to play @ Left back so leave him then

and yes I can only see us playing with 1 striker so getting another one in on loan is a good idea

Something like:

Lowton, Naughton, Dunne, Vlaar, Clark, Warnock, Lichaj, Baker, Stevens

Would be OK in terms of quality and numbers in defence, I think.

I still think we're a bit weak in midfield but know that Makoun is key there. He's the only one that could leave on a permanent deal now and allow us to bring someone in, similarly he could come back and make an impact (I'm one of those who wants to give him a chance).

We're light upfront, but like others I think I'd like to see Fonz and Weimann be given a go. N'Zogbia will be a forward primarily this season too I think and Holman can fill in. I'd only be interested in a loan/free transfer I think.

Save money for January/next Summer to replace Dunne and Warnock on frees and add a centre forward.

If Carroll wants to go to Newcastle despite knowing that they don't really need him, don't want to pay for him, and given what they already have up front then he has no ambition or desire. He wants to be in an environment where he is most comfortable and loved. I get that. But life very rarely presents you with perfect scenarios and he's likely going to have to accept a place that will help reignite his once very promising career. I don't know if that is us, but there's something good going on at Villa Park and if he can become focused he'd be a great addition.

I think you're getting ahead of yourself a little, Toronto. There's an upturn in optimism around the club at present, but we've not kicked a ball in anger yet so the "something good going on" comment is a little premature, in my opinion. It's perfectly understandable that he'd look on a move to Villa at present as a huge backwards step.

I agree.

Way, way too early to be talking in those terms. We've had a decent pre-season and bought some players who look decent, but for the rest of the football world, we're a club which stayed up by the skin of our teeth last season, and in the season before that, spent most of our time around the arse end of the table.

Let's keep expectations realistic and see what happens when the football starts. I know this terms gets bandied about a lot, but if ever there were a "transitional" season, this is going to be it.

The best thing to do is remain as cautiously optimistic as the football supporter can be, and put our trust in Lambert and team to sort things out.

Not really. They put a 6m price tag on his head a month ago and it is probably still there. They're not telling him he can go on a free or anything.

Maybe. But there's loads of examples (Luke Young, Dennis Irwin, Gael Clichy, Neil Taylor) of it working. Plus, with the growing fashion of inverted wingers it means wide players are coming inside and attacking fullbacks weaker sides more often. Being a right footed leftback would enable a fullback to tackle with their stronger foot should the winger come inside.

I accept that Paulie, but I think they will be waiting an awful long time to sell him if they think a club is going to pay £6m for him.

Naughton - £4mil? - Versistile?
Bassong - £4mil? - Good defender, will not be needed at Spurs.
Jarvis - £8mil? Can play either side. Gets lots of crosses in
Frimpong (Loan)
Sturridge (Loan)

Had curiously short arms.

I always remember a friend of mine was a bit obsessed with that, and used to scream SHORT ARMS! SHORT ARMS! at him whenever we played Man United.

There is something good going on at the club, but whether that is communicated to Andy Carroll is another matter. Will he see a club with renewed hope and optimism, a decent young squad that will no doubt improve over the coming years, one of the most promising young managers in the game at the helm or will he see a club that narrowly avoided relegation and is in the early stages of a rebuilding program.
Probably somewhere in between.

I think he'd be good for Villa, I think Villa would be good for him. Is there a chance that Randy will release some of the Browns money to back Lambert in a couple of major signings or at least one? Maybe.
But Carroll isnt the only guy out there worth going after and we're clearly looking for a striker.

So I say lets tell Liverpool to forget the Downing money they owe us, give us Carroll on loan for a season and we'll pay them £8m next season.

Didn't we give Given a 5 year deal to bump his money up a bit?

Yeah Given signed a 5 year deal.  I guess we can add contract negotiations to the list of things that TSM is terrible at.

I don't remember anyone questioning it at the time, although I accept there may have been one or two.
It's amazing how many come out of the woodwork when a player fails to deliver.
Look at N'Zogbia, apart from me and a couple of others everyone was saying to get him in. As soon as he stumbled and stalled his way through the season it became ' Effing McLeish, why did he buy him?'  ;D

I've been critical of N'Zogbia. But, I was delighted when we signed him. I hope we stick with him. There's a real talent in there somewhere.

Scott Sinclair is on his way to Man City.

Guess Adam Johnson will be available now. Probably out of our reach at the minute though.
