Shay is still a top class keeper, whether he will be in another 3 yes though is a different matter, although maybe we had to offer him a 5 yr deal to tempt him , the advantage freidal had was his fitness level and being injury free over many years, shay if fit will still be a decent keeper but a 5 yr deal with his injury history did seem debatable .

Having seen the way we played on Saturday, I think the goalkeeper is going to be involved with his feet a lot more this season and that could really be a deciding factor on who starts.

Anyone got that Given/Dion Dublin clip to hand?

I only thought he was given a 5 year deal as it's just one contract whereas when we signed Friedel we gave him a 3 year deal thinking he would be ready to retire when that was finished but he's fine to play and so we'd have had to give him an increased deal to stay which Spurs did.

Given has just one contract, albeit a very lucrative one.

I think Guzan will be number one for most of this season anyway. Even if Given starts the season, I imagine he'll get an injury at some stage and if Guzan plays well, he'll stay in goal unlike last season.

don't recall anybody moaning when shay signed that 5 year contract. Still a top class keeper for me

You're joking.  Lots of people thought it was ridiculous, and said so.

I was one of the ones moaning.  I wanted us to go for Foster as he could have been our No1 for ten years and also would have started on cheaper wages.  Anyhoo, Given isn’t bad.  I think he is a "model pro” in many ways so hopefully in the later stages of his contract he will become a very expensive cheer leader/coach for the younger keepers.

Carroll not going to West Ham. I hope we're doing something behind the scenes.

We need a left back and a striker before the window shuts really. And another central midfielder if Makoun is never to be seen again.

I think a left back obviously, another 'goalscorer' after seeing what happened when Bent got injured last season, and another centre back considering 2 have gone and another is injured and could potentially be moved on sooner rather than later. I think we would then be 'good to go'.

Still think a ball winning central midfielder is also a priority.  Lambert used the loan system pretty well at Norwich, so he might go down that route with a CB until Dunne is fit again.

We may well be but i cant see carroll wanting to come to villa either in all honesty, the noises from carrolls camp suggest he wouldnt be interested.

I think central midfield is pretty ok. Lots of bodies there with Delph, Bannan, Herd, Karim, Ireland , Gardner and possibly Makoun.  SUrely some combination of two or three of them should keep us ticking over for the season. What we lack now really is a striker and a pacey wide player to pressure N'Zog and Albrighton. A left back would also be great.

What have they said?  Or are you referring to the “european football” requirement?

Which club is likely to offer him a more appealing option, though?
