I'd be happy with Danny Rose. There again I'm still in the over-excited signing new manager its all brilliant stage.

I think Danny Rose is a really poor player. He might prove me wrong, but I don't think he's up to much at all.

Yeah, he could be. Just haven't seen enough of him to form any sort of opinion.

I really hate Danny Rose, he has a horrible nasty attitude.

He won't prove you wrong, he is muck. A Stefan Moore fall down the leagues awaits him.

Worried enough our squad to be honest. It often takes players from other countries time to settle in so I'm not expecting our 3 ex Dutch league player to be totally firing for the first few months. Lambert obviously sees something in Lowton but it's a big jump from the third tier to the first one. Apart from that it's a lot of the same players that have struggled badly over the past 2 seasons.

I can see why people are concerned about our squad. However, it must be kept in mind that if Lambert can get more out of our original players - which he seems to be on course to - then that will make some players seem like new signings: Bannan - wasted under McLeish's prehistoric football, looks to have a new lease of life (giving him the armband against Portland was a very good touch); Ireland will be able to do more with his talent with more movement around him; Clark at centre back will, I think, be like the authoritative ball-playing defender we've lacked for years.

There's not much proof yet, but the things he's been saying, the way we've played in these friendlies, the players who've been pushed to the forefront and the type of signings - I'm more optimistic about this season than I can recall for a long while.

Yep a decent manager like Lambert should be able to improve some of the players but a few of them are beyond redemption (Hutton, Warnock for two) and a host of 'youth' players have proven little at senior football and it's beyond time that they started stepping up.

Our defence could hardly be any worse this season but we still lack pace badly at centre half and have little presence to speak of in midfield. Who is going to supply Bent with the chances? Nzogbia has looked lost at Villa Park thus far and where will Gabby fit if at all? I still think our squad is unbalanced with a few limited ball playing midfielders but little or nothing out wide, physically small and slow players generally and very thin in certain positions like left back.

I haven't watched the friendlies but what sort of side is likely to be starting come league kick off. Something like this I ass-u-me

---------------Given
Lowton, Vlaar, Clark/Dunne, Cresswell/new signing
----------El Ahmadi, Ireland---------
Nzogbia, Bannan, Holman
----------Bent-------------------

Don't rate Danny Rose at all. I don't see what he'd offer to our midfield. I know he was playing out of position for GB, as he's normally CM but he just reminded me of SWP without the pace. Looks like a Championship player at best. Not brilliant on the ball, limited passing range. If we're gonna raid Spurs reserves I'd rather have Huddlestone. I'd even rather have Jenas back. I wouldn't actually mind Dos Santos. He's a little erratic but he's got flair and plenty of ability. I'm surprised he's not played more than he has, but his attitude isn't great.

Fingers crossed there's nothing to the rumour. Better off going back to the dutch league for another midfielder.

Newcastle are looking to sell Demba Ba, if someone offers them the £7m to activate the release clause in his contract which expires in a couple of days, so that they can bring Carroll back.

If Lambert is thinking we need another striker then Ba could be an option, and a much better value for money option than Carroll considering he would cost twice as much but not give twice as many goals than Ba.

Ba's 27 so still got a fair few years left in him yet, got 4th highest goal tally in EPL last season and had a good record for West Ham too scoring 7 goals in 10 starts and 2 subs. He's played in France, Belgium, Germany and now England so he's been around a bit in different leagues and scored regular in all of them.

£7m on a 3 year contract could be good for us - as of yet we don't know if Gabby is going to get back to his best, Weimann is still pretty much an unknown quantity on just how many goals he can get in a season and the Fonz is another unknown quantity on whether he can play the season and get the goals we need from him as a striker.

Your forgetting that he has very dodgy knees and that he failed a medical @ Stoke before Newcastle took a gamble and his wages would be an issue

Yeah, from what I hear, his son is finished school in Cleveland and Randy will pretty much sever ties with the place being based in New York and, more regularly, over here.

I'd heard more than one whisper about renewed investment and I had thought it was outside investment in Villa rather than selling the Browns but its all good.
He's getting dogs abuse over there even worse than some of the idiots here and he'll never measure up to his dad in their eyes so its probably for the best to put all his eggs in one basket.
I dont think this means extravagant investment immediately but we can expect to worry about finances less (the wages issue will not change, nor should it) and maybe we can aim a bit higher on a few targets.

You're not now trying to claim that your whispers about selling to Arabs was now Lerner selling the Browns are you?  The two things are clearly entirely different.

Errr... no. Are you trying to claim I haven't been saying for some time now that Randy was planning some sort of refinancing?
I didn't know from where or exactly how as Ive already said, the Arab rumours came from elsewhere but were interesting. I still wouldnt rule that out in the future.

Selling one asset doesn't mean he's planning anything different for Aston Villa.

No it doesn't, I agree. But he can choose to push Villa forward again if he wants to.
As was suggested earlier this year when it was thought we were potless.

I'm not expecting lavish spending and the wages issue is probably set in stone now. But for arguments sake, if we diceided to lose player x and Y on combined £100,000 wages and £4m transfer fees and signed player z for £20m and £100,000 wages, its possible. I dont think transfer fees will be as much of a stumbling block as they were. But the salary situation has to be sustainable.
Also, I think its indicative that by selling the Browns he wants to concentrate on Villa. I believe whilst the Browns were his duty, Villa is his passion.

The old dodgy knees story, in his last 2 seasons he has played in 73 games and scored 32 goals, can't be that bad can they.

I think that the Dutch-league experience is not so far from the EPL, and I do expect something from each of these players pretty early on in their Villa career.
Re Lowton, it took Walker and Naughton a while to adapt to the higher standard; but then they were alot younger. I think Lowton is definitely a "wait and see" project.
I can understand the caution after two seasons of utter dross but - like MON's arrival - Lambert has a determined aura about him that kindles confidence and optimism; certainly for me anyway. He has plenty of talent at his disposal: it's up to him to prove that he can exploit it by blending the player-combinations to get the best out of each. Holman and KEA certainly seem capable of providing the MF authority that we need.

Maybe he just needs the money for something else and the Browns are worth more.
