Last abandoned Villa match?
« on: February 11, 2012, 04:01:35 PM »
Anyone know which game it was? If it's an away one, what was our last abandoned game at Villa Park?

I can't remember ever having attended an abandoned game. The only one I can think of in the last forty years is the infamous Rangers friendly but I was thinking more of matches abandoned due to horrendous weather rather than horrendous fans.

The one in the late 90's when there were rumours of a protest against Ellis and although the pitch was clear, the surroundings were too dangerous apparently. I think Angel was signed by the next week.

That was postponed, not abandoned. Leicester I think.

The last game to be abandoned was against Middlesbrough away in season 1968/69.

Sorry, I misread the original post. There have been a few that should have but none in my lifetime I believe. The last home ones I remember must have been either Man Citeh at home during the season of the new Witton when the sleet was sideways and I thought the roof was going to be blown out in the new stand it was flexing so much. And obviously I thought the infamous Santa match should have been abandoned after it happened at half time but then I thought the man was dead.

I cannot remember any abandoned game for Villa apart from the infamous Rangers friendly.

I was at a Torquay v Mansfield game, would have been about 12/13 years ago . It started getting very very foggy, the Torquay keeper was venturing out his area and reporting back to us standing behind the goal what was going on at the other end. Eventually the referee abandoned the game and we were able to go round the ticket office and get a refund if we didn't think we would get to the rearranged fixture. I had paid for 1 adult and 2 kids, but they refunded me for 3 adults ! Of course, half an hour after abandonment  the fog lifted and you could see all the pitch clearly.

If a game is ever abandoned at Villa Park, what happens as regards tickets for the rearranged fixture ?
I was quite surprised when I just looked at the official site.

http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/CustomerCharter

Free admission if you are admitted to the ground and game is abandoned before kick-off. (Obviously)
But  half price admission to the rearranged fixture if the game has actually kicked off !

Quote
The Division 1 fixture between Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa played on Saturday November 26th 1898 was abandoned after 79 minutes due to bad light. Sheffield Wednesday were 3-1 up at the time. Uniquely, rather than let the score stand or order the whole match to be replayed, the League decreed that the two clubs should resume the match at Sheffield and play only the final 11 minutes. This they did nearly four months later on Monday March 13th 1899 when Sheffield Wednesday added one more goal to make the final score 4-1. By the time the match was resumed both clubs had changed their line-ups - Billy Garraty of Aston Villa, and Samuel Bosworth, Bob Ferrier, Ambrose Langley, Jack Pryce and Fred Richards (who scored the final goal) of Wednesday all played in only the final 11 minutes. Surely these players were the first substitutes used in a League match!

I know it wasn't abandoned but wasn't there a game against Racist FC that was called off so late that the coaches with their fans on were arriving at VP when it was announced? About 10 years ago?
