He was what my Stripey workmates used to call "Johnny-on-the-spot." Usually in just the right place to tap the ball home.

Did any player have a shorter name in terms of number of characters?

I remember Mel Eves by name for Wolves but wouldn't recognise him if he walked in and shat on the cat. I couldn't tell you if he was an attacker, defender or substitute.

Bomber Brown was a good player, mind.
Mel Eves played up front alongside John Richards.

That's because he played in the late 60s.

And, strangely, his real name is John Ure but he was know as Ian, before changing it to Midge in the early 80s

A bit of quick Googling suggests the China's eighth highest goalscorer and current captain and star of Qingdao Hainiu is the probable winner.

IIRC he played for Man U against us in the 1970 semi final at Villa Park.

I'm sure I may have posted this before so apologies for repeating.  Back in 1977 we lived in Great Barr and being Catholics attended mass in The Holy Name church at the Scott Arms.  Tony Brown and his wife always sat in the pew behind us.  Our daughter was a small baby at the time and Brown and his missus spent a lot of time playing with, and amusing her.  They were nice people.  As a slight aside, as said, he was a bloody good player who was deadly in front of goal.

We used to go to the same church (and school) Dave, and saw him there frequently too. He was often hassled for autographs afterwards but always seemed to willingly sign as many as he was requested (obviously I wasn't interested). A couple of years later Terry Donovan used to attend mass there too.

Every time I hear the name Ian Ure mentioned I always think of the Andy Lochhead equaliser against Manure in that League Cup Semi-Final.  I can visualise it now in my minds eye.  Ure rose up to clear the ball and totally mis-timed his jump.  He reached his zenith and was on his way down just as Andy was rising and passing him by.  The rest as they say...

Didn't Manure bur Ure from Arsenal, or was it the other way round?
