Title: Radio WM
Post by: saunders_heroes on February 03, 2012, 07:18:47 PM
Just what's their problem with the Villa? The whole sports dept seems to be anti Villa for some reason, and that's not the paranoia speaking believe me. They seem to be wallowing in our shit season and they're practically taking the piss out of us with constant digs. Even after a win they'll take a negative slant at things. For example, right after we beat Chelsea 3-1 in their own back yard the first thing Paul ("call me Franksy") Franks said, "Villa win 3-1 but will Bent be here at the end of January". You could hear the pain in Mark Regan's voice when Villa hit back at Wolves the other week, and it almost killed him when Keane hit the winner. Even the other night they claimed we were "probably a bit better second half against QPR" even when we absolutely battered them and scored two fantastic goals, and they hardly mentioned the clear cut pens we should have been awarded.
They've been like this with Villa for a few seasons now but they seem to be getting worse.
I know we've been pretty shite this season but that's mainly down to our awful defence, but other than that I think we've some decent football and scored some cracking goals. According to WM though we're akin to Wimbledon of the 1980s.
Thoughts?

You're right. Even when we win they have to moan about the crowd, or certain players, or transfers. After the Wolves game you wouldn't have known it was a derby - they only wanted to talk about Wolves.

I don't see it myself. They're not meant to be cheerleaders for the club and will exagerate the negative as well as the positive to provoke a reaction from the supporters and initiate phone calls. It's the same for all clubs, the media will never match the opinion of the fans.

Local coverage, however patchy the quality, should be cherished or the alternative will be Murray, Savage and the radio equivalent of Sky Sports news.

I think - and have mentioned before - that WM now find getting information out of the club much more difficult since the Randy Lerner takeover. The club have made their job more difficult and WM are reacting against this. I don't think ths is confined to WM though as Pat Murphy on Five Live has also more negative about Villa in recent years, even more so since Martin O'Neill left.

I listened to the phone in earlier and Paul Franks said this was the most boring Villa team in the most boring Villa season ever. To claim that every game has been boring is just utter shite. We've been involved in some cracking games this season and he knows it.
They seem to be down on everything Villa whilst proclaiming Small Heath as the new Brazil. Every time they mention them they talk of the fantastic football being played down there. Funny that because every time they've been on the box it's been a bore-fest.

I really do try to look at them objectively, but they do seem to go out of their way to exaggerate our bad points and ignore the good ones. How anyone can say our last three games have been boring is beyond me - we've scored at least twice in each of them for a start.

I've had my suspicions about Radio WM for a while. I can remember us beating Wigan 4-0 when Steve Bruce managed them and all they wanted to talk about was that our zonal marking system didn't work (despite us successfully defending every setpiece and not conceding a goal), how lucky we were to score four goals and about how great Steve Bruce was. They never seem to say anything positive about us whatever we do, and as such I very rarely listen to their commentary now.

I would be interested to see the places across the area where WM have their highest concentration of listeners. From their output and apparent leanings I would assume more people listen in the Black Country than in the Birmingham area.

Could it be that the other teams around us are never expected to amount to much, we are the big fish in our domain and should be able to match it with the best, we are supporters so we take umbrage but to the general populace we are a constant disappointment.

The radio phone in is a dying animal, hence the same callers being put on air time after time. At one time it was the only forum to air your views (apart from the pub) and the only place to hear others. Now there are numerous outlets and radio is being left behind.

I don't detect any anti-Villa feeling off WM but it does come across as a Wolves station nowadays. I listened to the goals on the following Monday after our game against Wolves and did it sound as if a non midland team had scored against them.

It's appalling radio - I continue to subject myself to it driving home from work just on the off change they have uncovered some jouranlistic revelation.  I think the last, & indeed only time they did this was when they broke the news of the signing of Sasa Curcic upon hearing which I genuinely punched the air with delight.

I can't listen to Franks - appalling broadcaster who says 'Er' all the time.  No fluency.

Mebbe just me but i've always thought WM was  mainly concerned about Westbrom/Wolves while BRMB was Villa/Blose. Probably a not deliberate policy by either station but thats how it panned out with thel ikes of tom ross and george gavin

They make a drama out of everything, that is their policy.  And another thing they spend about 15 minutes at the start of every show explaining what type of calls they are looking for, then they get about 6 callers (the exact same ones every night) in.  Plus a text or email from Ann in Wolverhampton, the thick cow sometimes makes an appearance on the phone.

They're all Wolves fans at WM I reckon.
Generally speaking I prefer BBC to commercial media, but in the case of local football I prefer Tom Ross. He is out front that he is a bluenose but genuinly backs all our teams, I know he does go on a bit about it at times. I get the impression he has good standing with all the clubs and gets a bit more reliable information from the club.

I used to like listening when Bruce was at the sty. When their report came on from an away game, Bruce would go into the commentary box and would always be panting, as if it was his last breath.

Tom's brother is a diehard Villa fan, of course.

That's my problem with Tom Ross, he tows the club line. He won't upset the applecart for fear of losing his priveleged access.

There's a young Villa fan that regularly calls the WM phone in. They seem to be about 13 years old and are so passionate about the Villa that it always raises a smile.

Radio WM are a fantastic locally produced station why do some people seem to think otherwise? The station as a whole give each time a fair share of the airwaves If I am right in thinking they currently air more local games than any other station in the Midlands. The presenters all have their favourite team etc but isn;t that human nature? Mark Regan is a blue nose, Daz Hale a Wolves fan. For christ sake it's a radio station why all the negative moaning?

The Wolves game was very good, an exciting Derby won by two cracking goals from Keane.
The Arse game was frustrating because we threw away a 2 goal lead but apart from 20 minutes of defensive madness just after half-time we did well, containing Arse and counter-attacking nicely, we then could have grabbed an equaliser once we settled back into that mode.
Against QPR we were excellent, 70% possession? 20 odd shots on goal? At least two stonewall penalties turned down? If we had won that 6-2 QPR couldn't have complained.

That's what I have been watching, we are getting better, you carry on having a downer on your club (probably, although you'll deny it, because we appointed a Blooz manager), I'll see the positives and enjoy my football thanks.

No one is saying its been a great season. In fact it's been shit, but to claim its the most boring team in the most boring Villa season ever is bollocks. We've been involved in some fine games and at times played some good football. That doesn't fit into WM's anti Villa agenda though. They want to push the myth that we play constant hoof football so they can satisfy their pro Small Heath agenda. The snide sneering digs they aim at Villa are constant, where as over at the Sty they play like Brazil of 1970 despite the fact that they've bored the pants off us every time they've been on TV.

The best thing I can say about them is that they go out of their way to create a controversy that isn't there in reality.  Such as if we don't win for a game it will be (in a dramatic voice) 'Crisis time at Villa Park, that's no win in one for them, the defence is a shambles, they're definitely going backwards under the Judas, I mean McLeish.'

Agree 100% that WM are massively anti Villa, been like it for a few seasons now but its getting worse. At the start of the season they were quoting that the Wolves squad was 'at least as good as Villa's', they have gone quiet on that score now though.

Franksy is a blue nose for a fact, i remember him confirming the fact he was in the 70's during the days of Tim Russon when he was only a junior reporter.

Regan has also confirmed he is DEFINATELY not a Villa fan, he is from Redditch so who does he support?

The league table doesn't lie and it hasn't been a great season.  But I'm not going to pretend that it hasn't been without its good points.  I throughly enjoyed the home games against Arsenal and QPR, as although the results weren't great, we played with a flair and attacking intent that was good to see.  In a perverse way, I'm also enjoying the comedy defending of Hutton and Warnock.  Just when you think they can't sink any lower, they find a new way to surprise you!

McLeish is doing about as well as I expected given the circumstances he's operating under.

I realised a long time ago that, in the W Midlands, we are there to be shot down due to our history and large support. We're the biggest club in the area by a mile with, until recently, an amazing record in local derbies.

Of course they are going to take a pop at us when we falter. I love their jealousy!!!!

I occasionally listen to WM for commentaries only, and very rarely stay tuned in to the phone ins simply because the negativity is too much too take some times. Personally I find they now seem to have an agenda...and that agenda is being contraversial. Most of the time I listen (more specifically during commentaries) they do seem to offer a fair and honest opinion...if we're playing shite then I wont to know, and similarly the will praise the team if we are playing well.

What I do and always have found frustrating...firstly, is that when they criticise the team and manager openly on the airwaves and pose the right questions to be asked to the listener, they then repeatedly fail to ask those very same questions to the manager when they have the chance to during after match interviews. Secondly, they either screen the callers to meet their agenda or fans with more than 2 brain cells simply dont phone in...a casing being most Villa fans I have heard of there end up blaming AM for being a Blue Nose.

At the end of the day, I'd rather a station tell it how it is whether its good or bad. We are the biggest club in the Midlands and have high expections both in the fans and the media, so if we're not meeting standards or performing on the pitch, then we are an easy target and open to criticism.

Should a local radio station not being trying to sell the undisputed footballing goliath of the region, rather than taking shots at us though? Fucking idiots the lot of 'em.

Now now calm down it's a forum and you know better than to make comments that the moderators do not like otherwise they will ban you. Big brother is watching us.

Hang on a minute. Nobody has said anything to you at all, so please don't come on here saying things that just aren't true.

I don't think it's limited to WM to be honest. I think the Birmingham Mail and BRMB are both painfully anti-Villa.

You're right. Even when we win they have to moan about the crowd, or certain players, or transfers. After the Wolves game you wouldn't have known it was a derby - they only wanted to talk about Wolves.

When were these cracking games actually played? Are you getting us confused with another team? To quote Franksy it has been shite. I'm taking an objective look on this but cannot agree with you. This has ben a fairly low key almost boring season so far I for one haven't honestly been entertaind so far this season have you? Tell you what If you have any more of those special glasses than turn rubbish into entertainment can I have a pair please.

Looks like someone from WM has signed up to the site.

Yes I did read the post otherwise I would not have commented. Radio WM DO NOT just put down the Villa whoever is having a bad time on and off the pitch will have comments made. Lets face we are not exactly having a great season or are you another one of these people who think that everyone else on here is wrong. Is there some kind of forum mafia on here?  Oh no we cannot say anything that goes against what a moderator thinks. Do moderators sign some kind of allegiance against the rest of the fans. WM as a local BBC radio station are very good - they know they have to try and appeal to a wider audience than that held by the commercial music stations and so have carved a more journalistic and sometimes campaigning niche. I don't think many have an issue with their overall output it's just that they appear to have an agenda when covering the biggest ffotball club in their catchment area.

I think what you have to remember that WM have 3 or 4 different presenters on their phone-ins, so each presenter will have a different take which is healthy to say the least. Especially when you consider the thick skined ache on independent radio.

WM will always raise questions on the subject matter. Wolves had it in the neck last week.

Football fans in general think that any given media are against their club. Look at the comments on this site... Meaning Evil, Big Gay Lawro, Pat Murphy, WM. Are they really all against us? I think not. It's a siege mentality... ua against the world. It's easy to pick up the negative comments and ignore the good.

I actually don't mind WM that much, I prefer listening to their commentaries more than BRMB where by the sounds of Tom Ross every time a team goes over the halfway line it's going to be a goal.

I think the problem WM is is doing the phone in every single night, it just used to be on Fridays didn't it? So they need a steady stream of callers every night. So it's easier to be negative for the sake of it as it pretty much guarantees callers.

Before xmas I think with some justification, neutrals (and plenty of us on here including me) were calling us the most boring team in the league.

However since Xmas we have certainly played a more watchable form of football. Chelsea away is another example and even though we lost, Arsenal at home was a very good game.

I agree. Effectively they have a Football phone-in 7 days a week; generally at least one of their teams are playing on a Sunday so you end up with a Sunday phone-in too. This seems to dillute the content. A Monday post-weekend phone-in is generally listenable. A Friday night pre-weekend phone-in is OK. They have Colin Gibson on sometimes too. Tuesday to Thursday phone-ins without a midweek game to discuss are painful and smack of schedule fillers.

Only just seen this thread but so very glad that it's been started.

I've posted several comments in the past about Radio WM, who I loathe with a vengeance. Not sure whether it's a conscious anti Villa mission they're on or that they're just naturally moaning, negative, whingers (Franks seems to moan about life in general and is the Daily Mail on the radio when discussing other things too).  Whichever it is though, I believe that they have an impact on the mindset of our support and that the general pessimistic and negative attitude that is so prevalent among large sections of the crowd (not just this season but even when MON was here) is influenced by them.

One example I'd offer is Mr Franks' undisguised and self righteous joy some seasons ago when we were losing 1 - 0 at HT to Newcastle and ended up winning 4 - 1. Our tall friend didn't celebrate the turn round, instead concentrating on the fact that Petrov had been replaced at half time and citing it as evidence to support his campaign against that player.

I have to say that Bluenose Ross on BRMB is infinitely preferable and I only listen to WM now when there is no alternative.

Tom Ross is much more even-handed than the muppets on WM. In fact, the more I here those dreadnoughts, the higher my regard for Tom.

That Lee (the Albion fan)  is a character alright, but we'll never hear callers of the calibre of Ashok (Beebo), and Acka again. May they both rest in peace.

Is that comment not being a little arrogant? When I have made a comment what happened? Thats right I was kicked off the site why whats the difference? Fellow fans on here I am calling on you to give an honest opinion if you think someone should be kicked off for giving an opinion .

Don't ask for an honest opinion please.

Still like to know why my location had been changed without my consent ? Is this allowed?

Of course it's allowed, it's not your site.

This is amazing this site, is there a small band of fans who gather each week and discuss who they can kick off just because they don't agree with the majority on the site but in reality the minority overall.

What have you got lined up for next Summer wazzyg?
McLeish will still be there and you have told us that you won't be going to the Villa anymore.

Apart from this site I do not know anyone that really agrees with the manager at the moment in the early days lots of fans were angry but now there are many more. Do you not see the fans anger? I would really like to know how you feel not what you want people to think that you feel. The forum is for open discussion am I right?
I am prepared to give McLeish a fair chance. Why would I 'feel' any differently to how I want other people to think that I feel, to repeat your bizarre question?
Now, answer my question please. What will you be doing next Summer, as McLeish will still be here? Will you still be paying over the odds for a season ticket?

As previously mentioned I accidentally thought that I was paying just over £600 because of direct debit when are YOU going to drop the subject. I wonder if Dave Woodhall will kick you off, of course not your one of his gang aren't you?

Did you listen to Talksport last night no one on their was in favour of AM.

I cannot wait for when AM finally gets the boot and fans who want him out can start looking forward to going to the match again. AM is the reason for poor results and low crowds whether you want to accept it or not.

PercyN'thehood - I do not know who the person actually is that I replied to DaveMcLark Five (by that I mean personally ) why does he take it upon himself then to question me. I am Villa die hard hence the reason I complain on here who is this fan to question me? I am not having a go at you my friend by the way. There are just a few fans on here whi I honestly believe think that they have some kind of god given right to think that because they have maybe been on here from the start that everyone else is wrong on all topics. Look at the WM topic . Everyone who knows me personaly knows that I will never have anything said about the Villa but this topic about AM has totally parted the fans. I sit with fans who disagree but also as many that do agree. Just because people on here disagree doesn't mean that I am in the minority. I would love to see how this topic will change once we or when we get the chance to change manager beit next season or five years time etc. I do not expect anyone to question my support for the club. What gives someone the right to think that? I dont know how old Dave is but is it an age thing where he thinks because he has supported the club for 50 years then he has a right . I have supported the club since I was very young. This site is about opinion you don't and should not be criticised for being vocal about the manager. It's jus that I have a issue with who we have in charge he maybe a good person but I dont visit villa park and pay hard earned money to watch rubbish.

Say something positive about anything at all about Villa and I would start to think about believing you. Remember, you came on here spouting bile. Don't try to make it appear you have been reasonable in putting your view across. DC5 is not a moderator either. I don't know what your beef is with the mods. You see yourself as some sort of champion of the liberal world of free speech, until someone disagrees with you and then you start to get abusive and TYPE IN CAPS. Free speech for all unless I don't like what you're saying, basically.

I don't mean to cast aspersions, but Private Eye magazine did once find that BBC Radio 5 had 'on-call' members of the public they could rely on, should they not have the right quota of callers. I'm not saying anything, but it does happen.

Of course it does - in just the same way a lot of the letters that appear in newspapers and magazines are written by the sub-editor or other staff (H&V excluded of course), often to provoke some follow-up material. but more often to fill space because nobody else has bothered to write in.

Assuming that his new moniker denotes his location, shouldn't he really be supporting Smethwick FC?

And how can someone from Yam-Yam land afford a season ticket at Villa, aren't they all on benefits in Dugley and Smerrick?

I can't remember a time when I've tuned into that station that I haven't been bored shitless.

If they're anti-Villa, it's because they're trying desperately to get listeners and callers - standard tactics of shockjock/TalkSport stations everywhere.

I used to like the George Gavin/Tom Ross days - Gavin was great at the wind-up and taking the piss out of Ross; and Ross trying to be the voice of reason.  We also used to have some decent Sports Forums.  Do they still do those these days?

I listen to WM every Sunday morning because Steve Wright's Lovesongs radio show makes me bilious. Last Sunday there was a woman going on at length about Marmalade making which was probably the worst radio since the Hindenburg crashed.

When the interview was over they played Bob Marley's Jammin'.

She'd bought over 120 Seville oranges and I'm now on medication.

I'd have called such a show "Jam'll fix it"...with Jammy Seville (Orange).

Serious question for a second but how will that work on a match night when there's a game at 7.45/8pm?

It's more logical to start the phone in from 7pm then.

to change tack slightly i do have ripped the 1986 home leg of the Milk Cup vs Portsmouth, live on WM, with commentary from Malcolm Boyden, i believe, who does a good job of making Villa sound like Barcelona...even though the final score was 0-0.

and in defence of WM, they did have an excellent jingle once "when the goals start flooding in, WM's lightning flashes are the first to keep you in touch".

do they still have the General Lee car siren when a goal floods in?
