It's no surprise that we are no longer attractive to Nike. Their business model relies upon and has always been to be associated with the very best and coolest sports men, women and teams in the world, so that association will transfer to the fan who buys the kit who will then feel cool by wearing the kit. The reality is that Aston Villa no longer occupies that position. We no longer fit their model and in reality, haven't done so for the last two seasons.

Didn't Walsall recently have a Nike kit? And don't Crystal Palace currently?

They pay Nike for their kits, in the way a sunday league side would do so - that's the difference.

I have always liked Nike for sportswear, (boots, trainers, tracksuits etc) and when Villa announced the deal with nike I was over the moon. A proper massive brand manufacturing our shirts was great. I love the shirt above that Salifou is wearing, I have it in long sleeves and is one of the best shirts we have ever had imo.

I don't wear/buy replica shirts nowadays, and the Macron deal wont change that. I consider myself to be quite brand aware whan it comes to clothing, so when somebody said we were having the shirts made by Macron, my immediate response was 'Who? Never heard of them.'

That said, the brand of the kit shouldn't mean a thing football wise

That shirt was just superb. The simplicity of it, the sponsor, everything about it oozed class.

That was the best kit Nike ever made for us. Not just the design, but the quality of the material was very good indeed. Their efforts in recent years has been way, way below that. The team that played in that kit wasn't bad either.

Very true. That's the only shirt I've bought in the last 15 years. I hardly wear it, certainly not to the match (whether any bloke aged 18 or over should wear replica kits is another argument, but they shouldn't really). However I just felt like owning that one as I feel it will become iconic in future due to, as you say, its simplicity and the sponsor mainly.

Bologna
AZ Alkmar
Boavista
Napoli
FC Lorient
AC Monaco

They aren't setting the world alight for sure but neither are they rubbish brands.

I reckon a deal with Macron could be a good way to go, they will pull out all of the stops to be kit manufacturer for a Premier League team (let's hope) and we'll have an attentive company on our hands. Wouldn't it be nice to be a priority for a partner rather than an irritation?

Villa unfortunately aren't seen as being a cool club or a club that plays great football, nobody else is interested in following us and though it was a good try by the club the NIKE deal didn't help.

We looked like the poor relation in comparison to Barcelona, Man Utd and Arsenal, now we've a chance to be brand leader.

In all reality, the brand of shirt won't help or hinder kit sales amongst our fans by enough to make a difference.

Not particularly fussed about who makes our kit.
I do remember the initial promo stuff Nike - The "We start today" (or was it tomorrow?) slogan with the back of the shirt on Gabby or Barry and the Holte End with some serious airbrushing/lense flare action.
As a signal of intent them were heady days on reflection.
It was a time when the club seemed to be good at PR.

You just feel the problems with the actual quality of the kit exemplified how Nike felt when it came to quality control, and how high up Villa are in their customer pecking order.

Le Coq Sportif
Henson
Diadora
Hummel

Hardly the big name, leading brands of their time yet all suppliers of our kit in the past.

Interesting report here in the Daily Mail that possibly throws some light on the way kit manufacturers think when it comes to supplying clubs' kits.

It still bugs me to this day that I missed out on one of those long sleeved Hummel shirts with 'Mcgrath', 'Cowans' etc on the back. I thought they were great - think they came in pale blue or white. Have never been able to find them since on ebay etc

I've got one with Withe on the back.

Must've shrunk in the wash though because it's a bit of a tight fit now
