I was in the posh seats yesterday at VP and saw the presentation of England Legacy Caps to Dion Dublin, Peter Withe, Tony Morley, Brian Little, Gareth Barry, Tony Daley, and John Gidman.

With Legacy caps also presented for Lee Hendrie, Ugo Ehiogu, and Sid Cowans. Easily the highlight of the day. UTV

What's the deal with the legacy caps?

It still pisses me off that Mortimer was never capped.

Supposedly 13 ex Villa got their caps yesterday, not that you'd know from the club as they don't seem to deem it worthy of mention.

The legacy caps are a cap with a number on it. so if you were the 1000th player to represent England yours has the number 1000 on it. I think.

I got that, but I didn't understand why they're only getting them now rather than at the time.

I assume because they hadn't thought of it before.

In November 2019 and to coincide with the Three Lions’ 1,000th game, the men’s national team introduced legacy numbers; a unique and chronological list dating back to 1872.

Ahead of UEFA EURO 2020, these numbers were symbolised by a red legacy cap that has been presented to all debutants ever since.

While occasional legacy cap presentations to former players have been held - including a EURO 96 reunion at Wembley in March 2024 – the intention is to formalise a rollout to willing and appropriate recipients.

The FA is now looking to make contact with former players and the close relatives of those no longer with us to help ensure each special velvet cap finds a rightful home.

It was just the 10 I mentioned - 7 of them in person, plus legacy caps for Sid (collected by his son), Ugo, and Lee Hendrie (working, collected by his wife). Also, presumably because it was local for him (?) Seth Johnson.

As part of the presentation, mention was made of the number of Villa players that have represented the England Mens team - 78 is what I think was said, though I've not checked whether that is accurate. It would have been nice if they would have added that puts us second on the list of clubs to provide the most.

I absolutely agree that Dennis Mortimer should have been capped. UTV

When each presentation was made - by FA Chair Debbie Hewitt - a photographer took a pic, so you imagine something will appear somewhere at some point - you hope at least.

What was nice was after they had all been done, Dion Dublin got on the mic and asked all the recipients to join him for a picture, adding it was just for him.
