Bogarde wasn't on the bench yesterday either, was he?

On a lighter note, clearly approving new terms and conditions for an online selling app I've only used onvce was clearly more attractive than the painful task I was procrastinating.
Force of habit searching for Villa items revealed the John McGinn draft excluder

From Konza thread
Didn't Steve Bruce sign John McGinn?
Oh yes quite right!
I just always associate McGinn and Smith.
So it's Bruce who made our best value signing this century.
And this is how he did it :
"I remember Neil Lennon's son telling me the best player in Scotland was John McGinn. He was at Hibs at the time, Lenny, so I got straight on the phone to him and said we need to find out about McGinn. So we went to work on it.

On signing McGinn
"I had heard his grandad used to be Celtic chairman. We had to stall.
We didn't have the £2million at the time and he was going to Celtic, but I had heard that his dad and grandad played golf. I thought 'I am going to try and get his dad down to give us a little bit of stalling time'
We got him to The Belfry and got the pro to play him - which gave us another 4-5 hours to rustle up the £2million because we didn't have it at the time. I am really pleased for him because he has turned into a really, really top player"

Quite Brilliant by Bruce.

He does so much running off the ball, he's not a natural athlete given his size (apart from the elite-level arse) and he's 30 in October.

In an era of 5 subs regularly being made, I think 90 minute games are probably a thing of the past for him now.

Still expect him to start the majority of our matches next season and to continue to be a key player for us.
I'm wondering where is he fitting into the team ? Especially bringing in two or three more signings and probably a couple of those being big name players.
I tend to think he be club captain but not necessarily a guaranteed starter though will start initially
I think once squad is finalised can see what the approach will be.

Worth opening the debate again given some felt discontent with his contribution

I think we're getting to the point where he'll be an important squad player, but without necessarily being first choice. McGinn's issue is we've got better players than him in every position now, and he doesn't really have a nailed on position to call his own.

I love his control of the ball.  He very rarely if ever gives the ball away.  But I agree in 18 months time he will be a squad player at best.
