You would like to think so but I doubt if many journeymen of lower division football enjoy a long lazy retirement. One of our neighbours was an ex professional goalkeeper and following a fairly long football career did as many years in the Police Force following the end of his sporting career. I think we overestimate as well how much being a lower leagued footballer is considered a ‘good’ job. I’m sure many feel it a grind and although pay is better perhaps than other jobs it is fraught with the similar anxieties such a contract termination or long term injury.
I know historically a lot of ex pro’s ran pubs, newsagents or sports shops but in these more modern days I suspect that unless you get a job in punditry for many there is a struggle to find the same type of pay on civvy street

I'd assume being smart with your money and living sensibly within your means would help a lot. Just because you can get a mortgage for a £2million house based on this year's earnings, doesn't mean you should get that mortgage.

Working post football career could also be a social need, rather than financial. You're not likely to get TV, coaching, reality TV and whatever else the big names get offered post career, so just doing nothing from age 35ish to retirement isn't something most people would enjoy, even if they could afford it.

I know people who get paid £500 per game playing in the Sunday League. There's good money there a lot of the time throughout the game.

In 1980 I got £4  a game and had to play under a false name as I was under 18 at the time. Sounds pathetic now buti was working in a factory on £22 per week at the time. So was my weekends sorted.

My old man was a useful player in his day and he told me that when the game was over and he was getting changed he would always find a ten shilling note in his shoe.
