"I met x and I thought he was an a******e" is an expression of opinion and probably not defamatory. Any named footballer on here who is accused of something, untruthfully, which would lower him in the reputation of right minded people generally or cause people to shun him could in theory sue. Whether many of them would choose to do so I doubt, but fanzine forums have been sued for defamation in the past.

So could you say "In my opinion Mr x seems to me to be the sort of person who might get into a pub car park fight with MrY." ? Not accusing him of doing it just giving an opinion. No more defamatory than a*****e.

Are you going to fund your solicitor to defend the case? A fair few grand to dig up witnesses from 30 years ago to prove your yarn.

Its not my area of expertise either, but if you PM me your address, I will get the retainer drafted for you.

But you just called Anelka a "racist twat" on the pre match thread. Isn't that as bad?

Genuine question, by the way
Isn't that opinion though, which is a right of free speech? Whereas naming people in an incident and stating it as fact is not?

I have met a few from all clubs. The best - - Matt Murray in Bambu, Richard Sneekses at his restaurant and Dion Dublin at V Festival bought me a pint.

The worst? Stan Collymore, Lee Hughes and Paul Tait.
Surprised at Stan in that company, he seems like a genuine fellow on the radio and twitter.

I'm sure something being an opinion doesn't make it ok, what with free speech etc etc.

I wouldn't consider Stan a genuine fellow

Nor me. In my opinion he's a bell end and when he talks about "my beloved Aston Villa" it boils my piss.

It's times like this I wish my surname wasn't X. It was bad enough when we lived in the states with Uncle Malcolm.

Its my opinion of him*. And you cannot defame somebody who plays for the Albion anyway.

*and I am not worth the effort of suing.

Craig Short used to come into the shop I worked in, on the day after his final appearance for Blackburn ended in a sending off I asked him why he didn't go out with a bang by landing a punch on a team mate? Knowing I'm a Villa supporter he knew immediately who I meant and said one of the pluses of retiring is that he won't have to spend another minute in the company of that self centred, egotistical tosser and he epitomises everything he hates about the modern game. I was also delighted to learn that even the tea ladies at Blackburn didn't like Savage.

In fairness, he might have changed, it was at the time he was with Liverpool, so ages ago.

I know the guy that was Paul Tait's solicitor  when he was playing for Small Heath. It probably won't surprise you to know that he hasn't told me any stories but I understand they were in quite regular contact in those days.

A mate had dealings with him when he was at Villa. without going into details, my mate a Forest fan and incredibly laid back bloke came the closest he's ever come to letting rip at somebody after spending a few minutes in his company. He said for a brief moment he thought it would be worth losing his job over.

He's very obnoxious and unpleasant by all accounts.

I remember hearing that Tait had his arm broken after the cup game in 2010 at the Sty when the Clements was turned over.

Any truth to that rumour?

After Villa beat Inter Milan 2-0 in 1990, me and my mates decided to hot foot it out of the ground and get to the pub for a few drinks before closing time. We ran back to the car and got away beating the worst of the traffic and got to the Oak and Ash in Walmley in good time. Amazingley, when we walked in Chris Price was already in there at the bar having a pint and a ciggy. To this day I don't know how he could have got showered, dressed and to the pub before us.
