We can forget about conceding too many. Unfortunately, that defensive wall of 11 players means we can also forget about scoring any.

Given the comparative level of player he was working with at SHA I can understand that he'd need to take a 'defense first' approach.  I don't know if he did the same in Scotland, put it's doubtful given that his players were a lot better than 90% of the teams he faced.  At least it'll be interesting to see what his apporach is with an upper midtable set of players he'll have here.

Quote
Sky Sports earlier claimed that the estimated figure of replacing Houllier with Mcleish would be £20 million.

This includes all the money paid to Houllier and his backroom staff. It also includes the money that will be paid to Birmingham City for there relegated manager.

To put it into context. All the money we recieve for the Ashley Young fee will go into making Alex Mcleish our new manager.

Thats a quote from somebody else on another forum , it just makes me sick thinking more and more about it

The people who defaced the wall of Bodymoore Heath are mindless idiots, it's looking more and more likely that McLeish could be our new manager I will continue to give one million per cent support to whoever is in charge because I love my club Aston Villa we have to pull together whichever manager we get even if some people don't like it the club is bigger than any person but spraying graffiti on the walls is really not the right thing to do.

well said.

I didn't say genius or brilliance, i said "tighter"

Sorry, wasn't solely aimed at you. Howeve,r the idea that he is guaranteed to improve our defence is completely unfounded as the lack of goals that they conceded was due to a lack of attacking intent rather than any defensive organisation, something that I am keen to highlight.

long balls for Bent and Gabby to chase?

I think the defence will be markedly better. Like everyone I have major concerns about the rest, but he'll have arguably the best forward he's ever coached so you have to think he'll look to get him the ball as much as possible. One would hope anyway.

I want to hear what he says, and where he starts to use player like Bannan, Makoun, Bradley and kids like Gardener and Hogg. He'll need to bring in a star player or two though to calm the masses, because the first few weeks are going to be rough seas

It may have been said in earlier posts ....but if he is offered the job and he accepts he must have balls of steel  !!

A 3 year contract on about £40k pw?
Total £6,240,000?

That would harden anybody's plums up, he get's no admiration from me for that.

What an absolute shambles it is at Villa right now. I never thought I'd see protests down the Villa again after Randy had taken over. I just can't believe that R
Randy would be so daft as to appoint Mcleish. I'd be interested to know what our goals are if Mcleish is appointed. Are we still aiming for top 4? And would this be seen as the last chance for Randy to get things right? Appoint Mcleish and things go wrong would Randy be forgiven?

Are we bollocks.

I defy anyone to suggest top four is even worth talking about if we appoint a manager who specialises in bottom four.

Is anyone else getting used to the idea now?

A lot more will when the club dish out a load of free badges saying 'Villa legends in the past and legends in the future' or some such marketing bullshit.

I tend to agree John. You have to think he'll walk into VP knowing the level of footballer at his disposal is significantly better. If he can bring in a solid CB and goalkeeper, and then one or two attacking players we'll be ok given what we still have at the club. He managed to con Hleb and Bentley into going to that lot, and most of us would take those two, or players like that.

I'm doing my best to keep an open mind about this.

Agree.
They're looking to hover mid-table with no real threat of relegation.

if he'd had the backing he would have signed a lot of decent players at blues including hart, nzogbia and bale.

The General alluded to this in his Facebook comment.

I thought that was discovered not to have been really the General?

Don't know where you get that from but, if it's true, it's twice what Fulham were paying Hughes.

I don't think we'd be aiming for top 4 whoever the manager was.

What is the best that we can hope for next season?  I think 7th.  This is realistic, and while it hurts, Houllier's 7-12th label is accurate, and that's where we'll be whether it's Hughes or McLeish.
