Houllier + Martinez would be worth a try .

And because Chelsea seem to clearly have a number 1 target they are pursuing. If they don't get him, there'll be no shortage of other options.

Recent posts have me feeling that all of the excitement about 'meltdown' news is very unsubstantiated and I'm more inclined to believe the media line that RM is choice number 1, and if he says no we're in a bit of a fix. If he says yes we're in a bit of a fix so I'm not quite sure what I want any more!

I'm sure we do want to talk to Everton about Moyes, but even if they let us, I only think he'd come if we promised to lavish funds on him in a way that he just won't get at the Toffees.

I would be well happy with that as it would allay fears about inexperience and allow ged to sort the rest of the club out

Houllier as first team manager and GH as some sort of director would be good enough for me.

We have handled ourselves with dignity and acted in exactly the right way.  If we started spouting names and failed to get them, then we would look like idiots who have handled it badly.

This will only prove to be the "right way" if we ultimately appoint a top quality manager.

If we appoint someone like Martinez, or worse, then we will look like idiots who have handled it badly.

In any case, I've been hearing this "right way" bollocks since O'Neill joined.  He was supposed to be building the club the "right way".  Except when he left everyone decided it had been the wrong way all along and that Houllier was in fact doing it the "right way".  And all the while the board have been doing things the "right way".

As far as I'm concerned, the "right way" can go jump in the lake; I want us to do things the "most effective way".

To be fair it wouldn't exactly have to be lavish funds to outstrip Everton's spending. From memory he's only spent about 6m net per season on average. We wouldn't have to match MON type spending for him to be in a better posItion than Everton. Still, I can't see him coming if Everton won't let us talk to him

GH upstairs with a young ambitious coach in the dugout is the way to go, but I don't think Martinez is that man.
The betting slip in my wallet says Owen Coyle.
BTW I'm not really a policeman.......just a reference to a Wednesday night in the Holte Pub in 1975. (Fulham 1 Bloose 0)

The 'right way' of MON building the side revolved around the ourchase of young English players to form our foundation.  What he then should have done was get an overseas superstar or two to put the icing on the cake, but instead bought experienced PL squad players we really didn't need due to the youth emerging.

The 'right way' of Randy is business ethics and avoiding illegal approaches and 'tapping up'.  Personally I quite like that, but agree we need to mix it in with something a little more effective aswell.

I really am liking that idea. I just hope the papers are wrong and he don't turn it down, the only way he should be given the villa job at this stage is with a DOF behind him

I reckon Risso would have a bed reserved next to Houllier.
In fairness, as soon as I heard we were after Martinez I thought it would be with a DOF as he would be too exposed otherwise.
It woould make sense if it was Houllier and I think he at least would make it work. Plus they could just run with whatever GH had lined up in terms of transfers, saving a lot of time and stress.

I'm not convinced Martinez is up to it but by concentrating purely on coaching the first team it would take a lot of pressure off him.
Moyes would also fit into this except with more say and better performance.

I still hope there's something in these overnight rumours though.

I agree with that.  Only way I can see it happening is that he knows of our interest and forces Kenwright's hand by saying he wants to talk to us, but he's probably too loyal to do that.  I'm afraid two parties trying to do things the honourable way doesn't result in a deal being struck in modern football!

I agree, Maz. In fact, I think the Houllier & Martinez team could be very effective....but somehow I doubt it is an option, although it would explain Martinez's apparent reluctance. I find it very difficult to believe that he would turn down the managers job here - perhaps I'm being arrogant about our club, but to me it seems like a 'no brainer'.
