Meg. Never finished outside bottom 6, regularly gets thrashed out of sight, no pressure to spend big bucks. Would be a big cop out. Not sure I believe it tbh. Like the guy but would be massively underwhelming and confirm that we're settling for not being one of the big boys. Would rather have stuck with houllier.

All managers need an opportunity - where did Moyes come from? Let's give him a chance if he'sthe one. He's intelligent and can spot a player.

Six months and he'd be gone and we'd be back to square one.

We need someone with proper Premier League / European experience. Someone who can build a dynasty.

Someon who will stay and see the job through.

Martinez is just a stop-gap.

As other have said, Martinez says "doing it on the cheap" to me. Could turn out to be a good appointment but it very much spells the end of Villa thinking big

I've just read the piece on the Evening Mail website and it did'nt sound very convincing, came across more like a made up tabloid page filler. Let's hope this is crap eh?

Kendrick seems pretty certain Whelan has given us permission. I like Martinez, he isn't a huge name but he likes good football and Wigan have signed some cracking foreign players. I'd have preferred Rafa, Moyes, Ancelotti or Van Gaal.. and all of those seem like non-starters. Big step for him, people have said they want someone who is desperate to manage Aston Villa - I imagine he will be. If it does turn out to be true, I'll back him 100% and I think he'll do a good job.

Be happy with Martinez. Might just need a platform to build on. If it is Martinez lets all get behind him and give him a chance.

I'll second that.

He'd be under big pressure from the off though.

he could do for Villa what Wenger did for Arsenal
or it could be too big for him, like Turner many moons ago...oh god !!!!

Martinez is an interesting appointment if true. He definately has potential and likes his team to play decent football, though I'm yet to be convinced that he's not more style than substance. For example, Wigan sometimes look completely disorganized and disjointed in defence, despite the fact that Martinez has had several seasons to sort that out.

Martinez is way too big a gamble.

His teams cannot defend and he is very unproven. An indication of either a lack of ambition methinks or a bizarre and desperate last throw of the dice.

Martinez would only be acceptable if about a dozen others had been asked and had turned it down.

And when I say "a dozen", I mean hundreds.

People need to remember, we're not Man United, we're Aston Villa - we're not entitled or have any divine right to have Ancelotti etc...

Nothing has even been announced on SSN and yet people on here are already pontifcating.

Everyone on here a few hours ago were certain Rafa was going to be manager.

Sorry. If Randy thinks Martinez is the answer then he hasn't got a clue.
Neither have you. What do you know about running a football club?

Of course people locked up in their bedrooms on football forums 7 hours a day know more than Randy.

I know that having managed to scrape survival with Wigan a couple of times is hardly the best of qualifications for running Aston Villa.

Trying to read the actual article on the Mail web page (it's a 'rip' at the top of the page and very blurred). Looks like, according to my eyes, that Coyle and Moyes were also on the list but that the Villa hadn't necessarily approached their respective clubs. The rest of the article reads like a done deal to me. But what do I know? I expected to read about Rafa's appointment and discovered it's more likely to be Martinez. Fine. I quite like the guy. If it is, good luck chap.
