Because he's a good goal keeper? The only issue is that he's a bit old. Some of the criticism of him on here this season has been over the top and he has saved us quite a few points. Any goalkeeper would struggle with our defenders in front of him.

I reckon it would have been better to give Brad the 2 year deal he wanted and bring in Scott Loach, Joe Lewis or Kieran Westwood and get them used to the club, defenders, etc rather than lose Brad on a free and have to pay £7/8m for a decent goalie and then the new keeper just having a few weeks to work with the defenders

Friedel has done a good job for us but is now 40 and I would rather see him go with some happy memories than watch him get steadily worse over the next two seasons and wonder why on earth we offered him a new contract...

I don't think Shay would be on silly money - no more than most Prem players .... and he'd be less costly than Foster.

Saying that - I'd prefer Foster marginally.

Aston Villa set to press ahead with move for Rangers' Allan McGregor

Gérard Houllier is expected to press ahead with plans to sign the Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor if he is cleared to return to work this week.

The Aston Villa manager has been recuperating at home since he was discharged from hospital last month, after suffering a dissection of the descending aorta.

Houllier's position will become clear once doctors reveal the results of what is understood to be a fourth and final set of tests.

The goalkeeping position has become a priority at Villa because of the imminent departure of Brad Friedel, who has attracted strong interest from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur and is certain to leave the Midlands.

McGregor, who has two years remaining on his contract at Rangers, has been on Houllier's radar for some time and is the Frenchman's first choice to replace Friedel. The 29-year-old would be valued at about £5m

Has made some great saves when I've watched him.

Nervous enough about signing players for that kind of money from the SPL. Petrov and Cuellar have at times shown their quality but dont think they have been great value for money in hindsight.

McGregor is a dubious enough character too, flicking v signs at his national team coach from the bench and been involved in other off field incidents.

The irony of that f*** up in the same week he is linked to Villa makes me cry.

In the same match, Given pulled off a world class save from Bardsley.

Given is a no brainer for me, if City are going to let him go. He may well be on crazy money at City, but he has said enough times over the past year he is desperate for first team football, so I think he would be more than happy to take a pay cut.

I accept Foster has improved a lot this year, but that is one good season on the back of a couple of seasons where he looked quite dodgy. He might be younger than Given, but at 28, it has taken him a good while to establish himself as a Premier League keeper.

Given has at least 4-5 years at the top left in him, this year off will have lengthened that if anything. He's been a regular top performer in the Premier League since 1997, whereas Foster really only has 1 full year as PL keeper (think he did ok that year Watford though, all I remember is Robinson scoring on him.)

All Foster has over Given is that he is younger, but I think we can see in modern football, the best keepers seem to be the ones with all the years experience behind them.

Would take either over McGregor.

Trouble is Given doesnt have any command of his area, just like Friedel, if we were to sign Given itd be a waste because we have better in Friedel imo
McGregor is good, he's been consistant all season making some amazing saves and winning the title was alot to do with him. He's got more to his game than saving the ball too!
