New keeper
« on: May 25, 2011, 04:04:35 PM »
Hope this is OK in it's own thread?

I was just wondering what the general consensus was on who are new keeper should be.  Think I've included all the names currently being linked and suggested.  And to keep life simple this is based on being our straight first choice and no Foster/Westwood or the like combinations.

Stekelenburg? I'd be surprised if we limited ourselves to UK-based goalies, to be honest.

He is quality! If we couldn't get him I would be happy with Robinson and Westwood.

I've voted for Foster, but most of them would probably be alright, to be honest. Well, maybe not Kirkland.

I posted on the summer transfer thread about Stekelenburg. He's right up there with the best in the world. With the Dutch league being poor and Ajax no longer a force in Europe, it's got to be worth a try. Out of the ones listed I'd prefer Given. I think Friedel has shown how a quality experienced goalkeeper can make a big difference. Kirkwood could have been a great but he's got a chronic back problem that isn't going to go away. Heard Pinnochio on Sky saying he could have been better than Clemence and Grobelaar but they had to get rid because they couldn't guarantee he could make an away trip without his back seizing up on the way.

Robinson's consistency has improved a lot the last few years and I'd take him, Foster or Given out of that lot.  Probably Foster as he's a good age and looks a very good keeper.

Brad not consistently good enough to be our no. 1, maybe as backup.
Green drops too many clangers.
Kirkland used to be very good but appears to be made of glass.

Would be happy with either Foster or Robinson.

I've heard good things about Stekelenburg but haven't really seen him properly.

I've gone for Robbinson on the basis of his experience.  He's steady.  Blues fans that I know have been less convinced by Foster in the final qtr of the season.  But I think Foster could be the more getable as he's settled in Birmingham by all accounts.
