I think he's a decent coach but an average to poor manager.
I'm always confused when people throw a losing cup final in as a highlight on his CV. Basically he won a league cup with Boro in the middle of some mediocre league placings, failed in the England job, got lots of credit for winning the Dutch league with a small club (even though that club had been runners up the year before so he hardly took them from nowhere), then failed in Germany. Throw in the brolley and the Dutch accent and I'm spectacularly underwhelmed by him. No prizes for guessing I'm not his agent.
Steve McLaren with Boro- 12th,11th,7th,11th,14thDavid Moyes with Everton- 7th,17th,4th,11th,6th,5th,5th,8thMoyes is a better manager for me and would be welcomed a lot more enthuiastically by most of the fans I would imagine.
I didn't mean to help turn this into McLaren v Moyes. Of all the people I've heard mentioned I like Moyes, Jol and Allardyce. People like Coyle and Lambert would be a gamble, could be a stroke of genius or could be a disaster. I don't think Benitez is right for us although his record with Valencia and Liverpool is decent. I can honestly say though that Steve McLaren wouldn't be in my top ten choices.
