However you slice it, Randy still went out and spent 30m of the football club's money on 2 players, plus whatever he is shelling out on wages for those two plus Bradley. Villadawg would only have been happy had we spent a net 30m so that he could then rest easy that Randy wasn't robbing the club blind.

Whilst I cant help but feel I'm about to want to slit my throat, what is the net spending figures for Spurs and Villa since Randy came in?

It’s difficult to know for certain. One of my big bugbears with PL football is the lack of transparency surrounding player transfers and costs.

Soccerbase.com has a decent transfers section but has too many “undisclosed” fees and don’t provide any summary figures so you have to trawl through and make your own calculations. The transfermarkt.co.uk website is the best site I know of for transfer information but it is by no means faultless.

It’s also worth taking into account that when Randy took over, Villa and Spurs were not operating on an level playing field financially. The Villa squad had finished the previous season in 16th and Spurs had missed qualifying for the CL by 2 points. In the five seasons before Randy, Villa spent approx £24m, whilst Spurs spent approx. £97m according to that website.

Bet Spurs said the same when they sold Carrick. Or Keane. Or Berbatov.

The difference is that Spurs spent significantly more on new players than they received from selling players in each of those seasons.

Limiting Ash to a plain out and out winger would be stupid now. He's too good a player and it makes him and us too predictable. For a full back it is great to know exactly where your man is goingbto be every time. 

What has happened recently is that he is notionally a wide player but with the freedom to roam as he sees fit.
