Only on H&V could a player score a goal that will rarely be seen executed in that manner, and be shot at. Seriously, given the tense vibe of the game, the fact United were a little on the back foot following City getting the equalizer a few minutes previously, and the fact is was a dog of a cross, all make the strike even better. I said when he scored it that it was one of the most incredible goals I had ever seen. Given all the pressure on him, and the game, it elevates in above most I have ever seen. There will always be one better, but christ on a bike, enjoy the skill. Don't care as long as it is not scored for Blues!!

I also thought the celebration was telling of how good a goal it was, and of what a relief it was to Rooney. He just stood, arms out, eyes closed, head back taking in the adulation of 70,000 people. I would imagine that life rarely gets better than that moment.

Having said all that Stan's goal against Madrid is my favourite of all time. Never had a game like that since for atmosphere, with that goal at the crescendo.

It is on youtube - just do Rooney goal vs Man City. Think it is one that will never look as good if you did not watch the match live though if that makes sense. Watching it cold and it is a very good overhead kick. In the context of 90 minutes, it was untouchable.

I ruined my shins on the seat in front when Stan put that in! Was a fantastic atmosphere.

Good goal? Yes. Great goal? Yes. Goal of the season? Yet to be seen. Goal of the Decade (Ronnie Irani on TalkSport)? No, you pathetic excuse for a broadcaster.

Has anyone mentioned that in the build up to the goal, the ball bobbled off his knee because he couldn't trap it properly?   Has anyone also mentioned that Fanny's cross was so shit it caused  Rooney to have to reach behind?

One of the jammiest goals I've ever seen.

A technically brilliant goal - could be Goal Of The Season. Can't stand Rooney but that was amazing.

...but all this "best goal ever" nonsense in the media - do me a favour!

All i can say is

Best goal I've seen at VP that one. Almost as athletic as me jumping 3 rows forward to celebrate it!

I've seen it a number of times, and while a good goal that deserves to be raved over a bit, it is very far from being the best goal ever scored and taken out of its context it's just a very unexpected and exciting strike that had its elements of fortune. I certainly don't think it's worthy of a poster in a tabloid.

Just seen the goal now. In all honesty I wasn't that impressed.

I thought the link someone posted of Rooney's goal against Newcastle was far better.
