I think they need the star quality though, Bren. After losing Ronaldo I don't think they will want it to happen again particularly as if he's for sale Man City will outbid everyone.

Reminds me of Deano's goal against Ipswich in 93, at the time I thought it was the best goal I've ever seen, it didn't even win goal of the month.

I thought Rooney's strike was fantastic, always bugs me when defenders let forwards do overhead kicks, stick your head in, you might get kicked but you'll get a free kick for foot up, Kompany seemed to slip to be fair to him.

Overhyped?  It may be now that we've got a 4 page thread on it!  ;)

In all seriousness though it was an absolutely stunning goal and technically perfect.  Couple that with the match circumstances and it's pretty obvious that it will be talked about in such high regard.  I find it hilarious how some people are saying it came of hs shin, nonsense,  if you want a flukey goal then try looking at Gabby's goal at Blackpool, dozy twonk nearly missed it.

agree with you, Peter Withes shinned goal was far superior.

i think SKY will have to give the goals its own channel,
so that they can just keep showing it millions of times and get ex Man Utd players reaction to it,
with a few celebrity Utd fans doing a constant voiceover

By replaying it ad nauseum on telly, by reproducing the entire sequence leading up to the goal in photographs on non-sports pages of newspapers and having radio phone ins to discuss whether or not it was the best goal what's ever been scored. Ever.

Undoubtedly a great goal simply on the basis of the athleticism and execution of the shot even if it did come off the shin.

However I've also heard pundits factoring in the skill of directing the ball into the far corner which is ridiculous, Rooney's only concern was getting contact the rest was in the lap of the Gods.

Sinclair's is the better strike but don't underestimate how great a strike Rooney's was. as the ball was crossed it got a deflection off the defender's back meaning that he couldn't just stand and wait for the ball to come to him, he had to go out to meet the ball by a few steps and to then did what he did was technically brilliant. truly great hit but as i opened with, nowhere near Sinclair's.

Interviewer: A magical magical goal Wayne, is that one youve been practising in training?
Rooney: Yeh well I just saw the ball come over and hit it, but yeh the boss has been getting me to practise bicycle kicks every day in training.
Interviewer: Really? And who gave Sir Alex the idea?
Rooney: He said some bloke called Doug Ellis told him.

I wish we had a player who could that, our players struggle to get a freekick over the wall
