Liverpool and Chelsea could threaten to hijack Aston Villa’s £18m move for Sunderland striker Darren Bent.

Bent, who handed in a transfer request at the Stadium of Light earlier today, is thought to be close to signing for Villa but would welcome interest from Chelsea and Liverpool.

The striker is reportedly in talks to complete a £70k a week contract negotiation with Aston Villa but sources suggest that he would favour a move to Kenny Dalgish’s Liverpool or Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea.

A potential stumbling block for Liverpool could be the price tag with Sunderland wanting offers in advance of £18m.

I find that very hard to beleive

No surprise at all that other rival bidders are now being smoked out, we've done extremely well to keep it quiet this long. Amazing really in the age of 24hr news, twitter etc.

anyway Chris , what are your thoughts on Mr Bent ?

A bit gobsmacked to be honest, I didn't expect us to be operating at this end of the market. I've said elsewhere that he's not a player I particularly like due to the limitations in his all round game but if he scores the goals then I think I can live with it and with Young, Downing, Albrighton and Adam supplying him with the opportunities there's no reason why he shouldn't.

and Im getting sick of this , why wasnt MON not given the money....

If he had, we'd have McGeady and Keane in the squad now..... enough said.

Bang on. The fact is that Randy was not willing to trust MON with any more money.  He had wasted  at least 50  of 80 m or so he spent on players.

The fact that Bent is in the Birmingham area makes me think that the transfer will be sewn up pretty soon, why else would he come down on the day he handed in a request?

Otherwise he'd have to return to Sunderland for training with his tales between his legs.

That is also my view Chris.  Not been a fan of his but he scores. By the way who is Adam? (have we signed Charlie?)

I could see Liverpool or Chelsea being interested in ash but I don't think bent would be a priority for either of them, they both lack a quality wide man, bent seems very keen so let's wrap this up quickly and move onto the next target, if as reported a medical is done and talk of £70000 a week then we may wrap it up tomorrow hopefully.

I'll say it again, until GH improves on what MON did at this club then judge his transfers and playing staff. Yes, he wasted some cash, but we wouldn't be 4th from bottom.

Stan's critique of Bent is a bit rich - he'll score more goals for Villa than you did sunbeam.
