There are a lot of reasons to dislike Spurs but mostly it is about envy at them doing the right thing and them getting more love than they seem to deserve.

It goes back a long way.

Spurs seem to do so many things right in terms of management, which Villa have tended to get wrong, especially in the post WW2 era when Villa excelled at screwing things up, in the early years of a football boom.

Villa were a mediocre selling club in 1951 when Spurs won their first league title - Villa sold Trevor Ford for the then record sum of £30k.

So as Villa started their decline, which was only temporarily interrupted by their giant-killing at Wembley, Spurs began their ascent. Spurs went in the opposite direction and it proved a turning point for the two clubs' fortunes and status.

Villa even sold them the captain who eventually helped them win the double in 1961, in Danny Blanchflower (another record £30k sell-off). As Villa were pissing away their heritage in the 1960s (Villa sold Hateley for £100k), Spurs were on the rise and became a prestige brand.

Even as Villa were winning their European trophy Spurs equalled Villa's record number of FA cup wins and eventually surpassed them ten years later.

There were plenty of reasons to resent the upstarts.

Just as Villa were slow to introduce floodlights in the 1950s, they were slow to implement the marketing and business innovations which Spurs led the way with.

This gave them the financial edge which enable Spurs to create a gap which Villa have since failed to bridge.

Spurs have just been a better run club since the Premiership began too.

Spurs bought players and sold them at huge profits (Berbatov and Modric et al) than Villa have managed - the two players mentioned both went for more than £30m. They will do it again with Bale.

But the big difference is that Spurs have reinvested the money in the team and Villa have not.

So the same pattern has repeated itself: Villa threw away their heritage and every advantage they have ever had and are doing it again and allowed a club with hardly any top flight history before WW2 to surpass them.

So no Villa fan needs to think too hard as to why they hate Spurs.

They just remind us of every useless **** who has fucked up our club.

Well, except for the farcical Alan Sugar years when they had managers like Peter Shreeves, Doug Livermore, Christian "zones 1-3" Gross , Gerry Francis, Ardiles, and then appointing George Graham ( Spurs' very own McLeish)

And we've won exactly the same trophies as Spurs since the premier league was formed.

I don't really hate spurs. I just really hate every single Spurs fan I've ever met

As much as I hate spurs right now, you've sure gotta love Gareth Bale.

I don't, he looks like Alex Kidd off the Sega Master System.  And don't get me started on that stupid heart celebration he does...

Fucking brilliant.

Spurs have done better than Villa since Harry Rednapp was appointed.  Before then, in the premiership, I believe Villa have  done much better league wise haven't they?  Certainly finished in the top 5 more than Spurs.

You don't half talk some shite. Winning the European Cup is no better than the FA Cup? Sure. They're better than us now. Five years ago they weren't. In five years time they won't be again.

We didn’t win a European cup, we won the European Cup.

As long as you’ve got a hole in your arse, Spurs will never equal that achievement, nor will they surpass our titles.

They’ve done well since they got Joe Lewis and a load of billionaires to back them. Good for them, as it’s meant that I no longer have to listen to Spurs fans whinge about finishing 13th, like I did every other Saturday for 15 odd years since football was invented.

They’ve got a good side, but you cannot be taken seriously if you’re not the biggest club in your city. Spurs aren’t even the second biggest.

We will have to console ourselves while we look enviously at their floodlights. Jesus titty fucking H Christ.

I used to really hate Spurs.  Problem is a very good friend of mine lives in North London.  Goes home and away every week.  He always wishes us the best of luck and genuinley wants us to do well because of me.  In returning the favour I find it really hard to hate Spurs because I want him to enjoy watching Spurs.

When we were kneck and kneck for 4th a few years ago I said to him, If we didn;t get 4th then I'd genuinley like him to enjoy Champions League because I knew he'd go to every game and enjoy it as much as I would.

He's coming in our away end at Arsenal in exchange for a weekend at his and on the piss.

What a load of shite. You make it sound like we won the Anglo-Italian not the European Cup. I prefer having that and winning the league in colour in the trophy room along with our 7 FA Cups rather than 8 FA Cups.

Every time I meet somebody from London who's a bit simple, I assume he's a Spurs fan.

Hard to see that being the case.  Lerner has inflicted lasting damage on the club.

I don't think I've met a Spurs fan from London. Most seem to live out in St Albans or some other comfy, middle class Hertfordshire backwater.

I suppose you've got to have a few quid though to afford a Spurs season ticket.

Not really, the only constant in football is that things always change. 5 years ago no one would have thought Spurs would be CL contenders while we're fighting the drop. At the same time the Sky 4 would never be budged and were going to be the top 4 for ever. Last year Swansea were going to finish bottom and challenge Derby for lowest points. Things change or don't go as we (or pundits) expect.

If we stay up and the players continue to improve and say Spurs sell Bale then it's not exactly going into Twilight Zone territory to imagine the gap between could be very small.
