Really don't agree with the "may as well" "got nothing to lose" stance towards signing Owen.
MON probably thought that when he signed Heskey for a nominal fee, but it's about the "opportunity cost" of the signing, i.e. the delay in then signing a "proper" striker, or the chances for younger strikers already at the club to come through.

Good point Villa For Life.

I hate villa making signings that, even at their origin, are players intended to fill out the squad.  I hope Mr H (have we agreed a name yet?) makes it his policy to only sign first team players or youngsters.

The squad should be made up of displaced first team players and promoted youth players.  It'd mean less, but better quality signings and more games for the likes of Clark, Albrighton, Bannan, Licaj (thereby increasing their value).

Easy...

Wouldn't be over keen on Owen - injury prone and on the way down in his career although a proven goal scorer. I'd rather go for up and coming talent who'd give us more of a future (and, yes, probably a tidy profit when he goes to Man City). Apparently Spurs and Liverpool are looking at a young Dutch striker who made his debut in the World Cup. 21 years old, 12 goals in 9 starts this season - Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Looks like the real dogs' bollocks.

Sorry

Richard of the Wolf`s shop - does not translate well - let him go to the Dingles.
We should perhaps look at -  Vick van het leeuwhol (Victor from the Lions den)....... Don`t Google him , I made it up  !

van Wolfswinkle sounds great from what I've seen and heard. Bear in mind though it's in the Dutch league and indeed today's press speculation is around him moving for a fair old wedge in January.

I seem to have a recurrent nightmare about us signing Owen and playing a 4-4-2 with him and Heskey. It almost seems to be written in the stars.

If that happens, that's probably it for me and football.

And we thought MON was backward. That tactic is literally from a different decade.

However, I'm sceptical. I don't think Gabby would be left out of the team, for one thing. For another, I don't think Randy would sanction the wages for a player of that age and injury record with no resale value or anything.

We're not good enough to sniff at signing Owen I'm affraid.
The one thing we all agree we lack is a natural finisher. Well, here's one for sure.
O.K, he's past his best and is injury prone. I'm sure any deal would reflect that. This is the guy, or one of them, that cost us a cup win last season remember and all because he gets a chance, one chance maybe, and finishes it. Had we such a player, we would have arguably won another 6 points this season so far and hammered West Ham 10-0.

Yes, by all means lets have a look at longer term targets too. In the meantime, Owen would be very welcome by my reckoning.
And certainly not playing with Heskey. Hopefully he does one a.s.a.p.

Michael Owen would be a brilliant signing, as would Darren Anderton.

He could be the replacement for Ginola we've been crying out for.

Aston Villa FC: The place where big-name footballers go to die.

I thought we'd shrugged of that image a while ago.

It's not a stage I want to revisit again anytime soon.

I know it's easier said than done, but we should be looking to sign good young players on the way up rather than older players on the way down.

Not for me.  He might play a few games for us, he might even score a few but what would concern me most is what it revealed about Houllier's thinking.

Owen might be a very good signing in order to win "ugly" (in my world beautiful) games. To be more consistent, I think we need to improve the overall passing. Bleeding obvious maybe, but you rarely read it on this site except when Reo-Coker is mentioned.

Good shout, maybe he could persuade Franz Carr to have one last shot at the medium time.

Or produce our own young players, I think Owen for 6 months with Delfouneso on loan second half the season is perfect for us.
