We're not good enough to sniff at signing Owen I'm affraid.
The one thing we all agree we lack is a natural finisher. Well, here's one for sure.
O.K, he's past his best and is injury prone. I'm sure any deal would reflect that. This is the guy, or one of them, that cost us a cup win last season remember and all because he gets a chance, one chance maybe, and finishes it. Had we such a player, we would have arguably won another 6 points this season so far and hammered West Ham 10-0.

Yes, by all means lets have a look at longer term targets too. In the meantime, Owen would be very welcome by my reckoning.
And certainly not playing with Heskey. Hopefully he does one a.s.a.p.

It's not the prospect of signing Owen that worries me - I take your point re sniffing at players like that - it is the point others have made regarding what sort of formation we'd be playing to accommodate him.

The thought, for example, of a 4-4-2 with Owen and Heskey up front is horrible. I too hope Heskey does one as soon as is humanly possible, but I doubt anyone is going to come in for him in January, and it doesn't take much of a flight of imagination that that might mean Heskey and Owen up front at least for the latter half of the season.

Preemptive response (to anyone about to say it) - yes, I know Heskey and Owen together was good enough for England. In 2001.

Jesus the Owen/Heskey partnership was in it's pomp 10 years ago (as above) Owen would be ok as a short term solution but not if it hinders the prospects of up and coming younger players like Weimann and Fonzie.

It's still questionable how much game time Owen would get so he would have to come on a pay as you play basis which would probably make it a no no on his part, why would he give up the good life at Utd?

Owen and Heskey/Carew are ydays players. We should be looking at 24/25 yr old up and coming players.

Not sure an Owen kind of player is what we need anyway, i think we need a more physical, touch player.....a young Robbie Keane kind of player if you like.

Just watched the Europa Lge highlights on TV.....theres plenty out there.Dortmunds C/F looks very good.

Wonder if Houllier would be able to persuade Lassana Diarra to move? Type of player we are crying out for in Midfield.

I thought about that, where is he now and is he a realistic target?

I doubt he could convince him to move from Real Madrid, and it'd be a lot of money.

I thought he'd left them? Does he play much. Maybe it is a bit pie in the sky. On the subject of Owen, i think it'd be a great buy and i dont think its unrealistic, the experiance he can give to players like Wiemann. And the fact he takes every chance which is what we really need

I think Mahamadou Diarra would be more realistic. I think he was at Lyon wth Houllier

Is Owen such a good role model though?  He appears to be more interested in his horses than football and his quotes saying (to paraphrase) that he'd prefer to play 20 games at Man United and still win medals rather than - say 40 games for Hmmm Wigan hardly inspirational stuff for Weimann.

As I said before, I'd prefer us to appoint a decent attacking coach than assume Owen will teach Weimann/Fonz new tricks.  It'd be a lot cheaper.

I read somewhere that he was on a list of players made available for transfer when Mourinho took over. He will be on big money though.

No chance he'd come here to be honest. Would be harsh on Big Brad too, who frankly has earned us some points by himself this season, certainly against Bolton and Everton we got 4 points from what could very easily have been bugger all.

Friedel has been a great keeper in his career, is occasionally very good for us but mostly nothing extraordinary, but I would like to see a new keeper in within a year.

As for Given, he'd be ideal. I'm suprised Arsenal didn't already snap him up though.
