I struggle with how you consider conceding a goal is giving a team advantage. Surely when the ref sees no advantage he blows and awards the decision?

Aftab is spot on as soon as Gomes did not take the "advantage" Clattenburg should have given the free-kick also Clattenburg got rid of all the players who were surounding the linesman so he could talk to him apart from Rio who was "chirpping away on his shoulder telling them what to do"

We did the ref send away all the Spuds players when taking to the linesman but allow Rio Ferdinand to stay there?
Why having been told by the linesman of the handball and having seen what had happened didn't he award the free kick and disallow the goal? - an easy out

The letting Ferdinand stand there and join in the conversation between referee and assistant (Having, quite rightly just sent the Spurs players away) is the bit that really highlights the officials had lost their heads by that point.

That's what annoyed me most about the whole episode.

The linesman's, sorry referee's assistant's action (whoa - too many apostrophes!! how should that be spelt?) was to put the flag in front of him, that is the indication of offside.  To flag for handball he should have held the flag in tottenham's direction.

Basically it was a fuck up by all concerned.

With regard to the advantage, how long does a ref have to change his decision?  To me, once signaled (and I have not seen footage of him doing this) then I'm not sure he can change it back to the original offence.

Its pretty much straight away. I rugby they give you longer to see what you make of the advantage which is better but then leads to debates about how long this should be. I watch MOTD this morning and I don't see the ref waving play on and giving the advantage I think he was just too incompetent/biased to give it.
Also Nani is a fcking cheat.

I also found that very annoying. That side  view of  Ferdinand is very ugly!

Me too, how the ref allowed Rio to stand there bawling at the lines man, then happily booked a Spurs player for protesting a couple of minutes later was just beyond belief. If you ask me, just the look on the ref's face told you that he did not have a clue what to do.
