It wasn't all that long ago when signing a new player didn't get as much hype as unveiling a new kit.

In this internet age, we're all desperate for any sort of news at all.  It therefore makes it easy for the clubs to turn the smallest thing into a huge marketing event.

They have done well to keep the kit design under wraps this year.

As for the question, when did all this start, I seem to remember there was a big launch for our new away kit in 1999. It was a nice away kit that year.

Definitely. Last season was the same too, I didn't see leaked pictures anywhere.

Maybe it's just when it's a nice kit? Last years was launched in Spain (at the Peace Cup), as far away from fans as possible (which I think is because they knew it was a poor design), this year it's right in Town so everyone can marvel in its awesomeness.

All I care about any new kit is that it has a claret body and blue sleeves.  I couldn't care less about any other aspect of it.

Yeah. Those paper-based kits are fantastic.
