Title: Kit Unveiling
Post by: Legion on July 09, 2010, 08:25:06 PM
From Pravda (http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/ClubNewsDetail/0,,10265~2088216,00.html):

Quote
Aston Villa will unveil our new home and away kits for the 2010-2011 season at an open-air event on Centenary Square at The ICC Birmingham on Thursday, July 15, with several first team players appearing to showcase the kit on the catwalk.

This event will also launch the club's exciting new partnership with FxPro.

Children from Aston Villa's charity partner, Acorns, will also appear on-stage with the Villa players and one lucky child will press the plunger to reveal a giant replica shirt on the outside of The ICC building.

The event, which will kick off at lunchtime [exact time to be confirmed], will also feature a five-a-side football tournament with local school children and a gig by Villa-supporting local band Mexicolas.

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov said: "We would love for our fans to support this event as we are all looking forward to an exciting season ahead. The new shirt looks great, too!"

FxPro is Aston Villa's principal club partner having recently agreed a deal which will see the foreign exchange broker's logo appear on the club's shirt for the next three seasons.

FxPro Director Denis Sukhotin commented: "The Aston Villa shirt unveiling will introduce fans to FxPro and kick off a relationship which is very exciting for both parties. Aston Villa is one of the great names in English football and we are proud to be a part of the club's future as they work hard to build on their success."

Amazingly I have been told by both the shop in New Street and Villa Park that they won't be on sale until the Middle of August !!!!.  Apparently something to do with the new sponsors and changing how it looks on the shirt?.

I love virtually everything the new regime has done since it came in, but they can't seem to get this new kit on sale aspect right at all.  The optimum time for a new shirt launch would be in June I would imagine, why we consistently keep selling them just as the season starts, is beyond me.

More to do with not having a sponsor until about 6 weeks ago, then the lead time of producing 100,000 shirts... Also, I can't imagine we are that high up on Nike's list in terms of production.

It's Friedel, Cuellar, Dunne, Petrov & Downing.

Seems more like a "creepy paedophile-like-smile convention" than a kit unveiling.

Kicks-off at 1pm ... and there's going to be a giant replica kit on display on the side of the ICC Birmingham.

They have done well to keep the kit design under wraps this year.

As for the question, when did all this start, I seem to remember there was a big launch for our new away kit in 1999. It was a nice away kit that year.

Maybe it's just when it's a nice kit? Last years was launched in Spain (at the Peace Cup), as far away from fans as possible (which I think is because they knew it was a poor design), this year it's right in Town so everyone can marvel in its awesomeness.

If it is then you can all call me "Mr Fantastic" for the entire season.

Plus, I don't think Villa would get a giant replica on the ICC if it's a slight adaptation of last seasons. It must be something different ... it MUST BE!!

Do multiple teams normally sign with the same sponsor? I have seen sponsors like Fly Emirates in different leagues, but never in the same league twice. I'm asking as I saw the new Fulham kit that was revealed and it had FxPro also on it.

I dont care for new kits. Bought the cup final shirt in 2000 and bought one because we put Acorns on. I reckon the club should already consider themselves lucky that I seem to be renewing every 8 years or so, because in my wardrobe Ive got pullovers, underpants, etc that Ive had for decades and Im still using.

If I remember correctly Rangers and Celtic were the last two Scottish Premier League teams to obtain shirt sponsors in the 1980s. At the time I think I read that by sponsoring one or other of the Old Firm teams the sponsor would be alienating nearly half of the population – and thus customers. CR Smith (a car firm methinks) came up with the clever ploy of sponsoring both of them, though I bet a fair number of teams’ fans probably despised the company for that very reason.

I wouldn't be so certain about that as i only walked past it little over 30 mins ago, it was up and no one was working on it and wasn't covered up.

If that is the new shirt then i'm annoyed as it just makes thewhole player unveiling a farce and a complete waste of money.  On the other hand you could see it as if they as wasting money on things like that then we must have quite a bit to spend on players.

well that's just stupid why didn't the cover it from the start.  or atleast do it at midnight and cover it afterwards.  Because lets face it anyone who is on broad street that time of night are too drunk to notice, it all seems poorly planned to me as doing what they did has wasted all the money on the unveiling because people were always gonna take pics and post them on here, the organisers of this should be sacked.

In all fairness the kist photo is usually leaked a few days/weeks before so for Villa to keep it under wraps until a few hours before isn't too bad to be honest.

MON was there with a hockey stick watching over every person who had seen the kit prior to launch.

Stupid? Absolute crass. The shirt wouldn't look to bad without it.

Agreed.  The tag line makes them look like a walking advert (even more than sponsorship normally does that is).

i didn't mean sack the people that designed the shirt i meant sack the people that organised the unveiling as it's poor planning not to cover the shirt picture until everyone going to work has seen the shirt.  It just makes the who unveiling a pointless waste of money as people was bound to take pictures and post them on the internat.

if it didnt have that abomination, or the check pattern was a solid blue, then it would be very nice...

dont like the strap line on the sponsor logo either, as it is bad design for the purpose of shirt design....

A few points

- it's a shirt, as someone said, it isn't the budget or the election or something. I'm more bothered in who will be wearing it next season.

- I'm not going to buy it, but then again, I never do, so my disappointment levels are constrained accordingly.

- Don't really care about the sponsor, so long as they pony up the cash, and there's lots of it. As for them looking like "walking adverts" (oops, was that on the GM thread?) - that is kind of the point.

- My opinion of the design is that it is really pretty horrible. Those big check bits are horrid.

1981 retro shirt for me. Served me well for years now. Claret, blue, end of.

It's alright. It's a claret body with blue arms.

I have a feeling some of our more cuddly brethren are concerned about how those chequers will look stretched over their love handles, but they have to do something to the shirt to justify getting you to fork out another £50.

We've had much, much worse.

The shorts will be much the same as last seasons.

Plain white, but instead of having a solid claret line they will have a claret checked line. Nice little touch, IMO.

And the socks are claret with a blue solid line at the top, and a blue checked line under a white Nike tick.

Navy blue polo arrived today - very nice - for info, like last season go a size up if you're thinking of getting one - I'm an L for the football shirt yet an XL for the polo.

If the design was different it would have drawn positives from some, negatives from others. There really isn't any design that's going to appease everyone. It's a kit. Honestly does it really matter? It's not what the players look like but what they do in it that bothers me.

Simple solution: go retro and you'll never worry about a kit launch ever again

On further reflection, its similar to the 80/81 strip, but i wish it was even closer and had a blue collar trim. Hopefully the second strip will be yellow as i am lead to believe the third kit is last years second, the white ?

shame, as it has the potential to be stunning...

change the checkered pattern to a solid strip, and it would be a modern take on the 80/81 shirt and an absolute winner, in my opinion...

the checkered pattern absolutely ruins the whole design, and looks like some junior has added it there, just because they worked out how to use the align tool in illustrator... surprised it isnt bevel and embossed too...

subtlety is completely lost...

i have made my feelings known about the strapline on the logo...

overall, a potentially classic villa shirt, ruined by poor design skills...

I don't understand how Nike can produce something as classy as the nice new tracksuit top and something as awful as that kit in the same year, for the same team.

I can't stop laughing about the goalie shirt though.

Edit: I think the sponsor blurb on the goalie shirt should read instead 'Trade Forex like a Pro, Look like a twat'.

The away one is alright, I reckon.

I hate it.  The black with the red logo would be OK, if it wasn't for a) the stupid tagline, and b) the claret and blue square chequered bits.  Black...red...claret....blue...just looks wrong to me.

Also agree, there is no reason at all for the red lettering as it does not go with any other element of the kit.  Not too fussed about the cheques on the body but think they look awful on the socks.

Seen better, seen far worse.  The goaile shirt on the other hand looks like a step back in time to the mid 90's, horrid.

Is this the season of lame kits or something? I've barely seen a decent one revealed in the whole of the Prem.

But saying that, I have a strange penchant for hideous and garish kits. There's something about the keepers kit that makes me like it. It might just be the fact Big Brad, mr Dependable is in it, or it might be the ridiculous tiger stripes. I quite like it.

The away is easily the best of a bad bunch.  Last year's were poor too, I'd be quite happy for us to tell Nike to sling their hook when the contract's up.  See if Umbro can do a better job.

Thirded.  The kit looks too dark with claret socks.  The shirts look okay at first until you notice the checks, which ruin them.  I suppose quite a few people were complaining about the similarity of the previous kits so they had to do something a bit different. Pity it had to be such Hummel style cheapness.  Bring on a deal with Adidas I say, they've been making the best shirts for years.  I quite like some of the Puma stuff as well.

I hate advertising on shirts, but the inclusion of the strap-line makes our new kit worse than most.

Home shirt - Don't like the checks, but other than that, it's claret and blue in the right places.

Away shirt - Here the checks work - has echoes of the Croatian away shirt. I like it (bar the advertising).

In the final analysis though, I'm not going to be parting with £50 for this year's over-hyped piece of polyester.  My 1957 Cup final replica shirt needs replacing and I'd rather spend my money on a new one of those.

Thankfully they probably won't be wearing that at Villa Park because it clashes with claret?

The new kits are absolutely average.

Thats how Nike football kits have gone I'm afraid. They're just templates at the end of the day, looks like no thought went into it whatsoever.

Very cheap looking...... not that I'm fussed as I won't be buying one anyway.

It's the away shirt for me this time around -

I have sympathy with staff at Villa Village.......was in there this morning deciding on whether to purchase purple tee shirt or polo
for the Dublin weekend .........majority of potential customers were enquiring about the new kit and it's availability and walking out with nothing

I love the new kit, ça va sans dire, it goes without saying, apart from the awful claret socks (we are Aston Villa, we have sky blue socks).

First of all, the design is peculiar, classy and unusual and the claret and blue checks recall  the moquette of our changing room.

Secondarily, the template is not the standard template of the other Nike kits , but it's conceived exclusively for us, the Aston Villa FC, so I dare to say this is the first outstanding Nike kit in years. . .

Still undecided on both kits, think the home looks the best ( if only that sponsor tag line was missing) My only concern though is that all my nike shirts I own 5 Villa and 1 Barcelona, do not have a single 'skeg' or pull in the material, which you get on cheap material if you catch them on something rough (asics kits were a nightmare). Having seen the new Man Utd shirt in my local sports shop window covered in skegs/pulls, this plastic bottle recycling rubbish theory has clearly made the material pretty poor. If I spend £50 and pick my little daughter up and her shoes skeg my shirt, I will not be impressed.

I think it's an ok strip although I'm not so keen on the checks on the socks. I'm a bit suprised at the strength of some of the negative reaction as they are all a sight better than some of the abominations we've had over the years.

Yes, it fulfills the main criteria, claret body with blue sleeves, and is therefore as you say significantly better than some of diadora/ asics/ hummel/ henson crap we've had previously. One of the fhe fundamental problems with changing the kit every year is that it puts such pressure on the design being different or original. Fashion doesn't move fast enough for the design simply to respond to subtle changes in taste. Every year I'm dreading that they'll have reverted to some stripey thing on the basis that they've exhausted all other options. Therefore in a lot of ways its a relief, although I don't think I'll be buying it as I don't like it as much as last year's or the one before.

Pale Blue socks, Coventry in-breds wear Sky Blue. Villa have no association with Sky Blue. Club colours are Claret & Pale Blue and is as much a part of our history as other things. Seems picky but as a Brummie exile living in Coventry its a no no for me. Nothing personal Archie, "Up the Villa".

It could be the best football shirt ever designed, but I still won't be buying either for the same reason I stopped buying shirts in about 2001- I don't like being an advert for a company that has nothing to do with football apart from the fact that they like the idea of getting advertising in every newspaper and Premier League highlights show worldwide on a weekly basis. I broke the cycle by acquiring the first Acorns shirt as I respected the Club's stance on promoting a local charity, but now we've gone back to a commercial sponsor (and a poorly represented one at that- that strapline is dreadful) I'll go back to displaying the names of obscure indie bands on my torso for the forseeable future, thanks.

I was hoping to pick up the white away shirt with Acorns logo on the cheap at the end of the season but they seem to have vanished from all the shops- does anyone know if we'll be keeping it on for next season (with FXPro logo) as a third choice kit?

I hate advertising on shirts, but the inclusion of the strap-line makes our new kit worse than most.

Home shirt - Don't like the checks, but other than that, it's claret and blue in the right places.

Away shirt - Here the checks work - has echoes of the Croatian away shirt. I like it (bar the advertising).

Agree with all of this.

My main bugbears wrt our home kits are the claret being too light, collars and any blue on the shoulder. Not keen on the sponsor's tagline but at least it's in white as opposed to say the NTL abomination. Thus I prefer this year's to the last couple.

Love the away kit and the claret and blue checks not only go well with black but also highlight that it's a Villa away shirt. Would still prefer white with claret trim mind.  It'll be interesting to see it in the flesh. I hated the pics of last Ingerland inspred shirt but thought it looked good on the players.

In short you can't please everyone. Some here love our yellow and blue away kits but I hate them. Some here want light blue socks but I prefer claret, black or white to them. Overall this year's efforts are pretty good IMO and I'll likely buy one  for the first time in 5 years.

Is it beyond the club's capability to have 5 or 6 designs as mock ups on the internet? The fans could be polled as to the best design instead of having a crap kit like the latest one imposed on us all? What were the designers thinking of? As for Brad's shirt....well that's just plain awful!! The neck of the home shirt looks unfinished, it needs some light blue trim to add contrast - it's as though the neckline was forgotten about.

The World Cup's been on so that's gonna push production of club shirts back.

We've pissed around and delayed with the new sponsor (exactly as we did last season when we didn't confirm Acorns again 'till quite late on).

We're way down on Nike's list of priorities anyway. It might not be nice to accept, but they do also have the likes of Man Utd, Barcelona, Inter, Arsenal, Porto, Celtic who I'm sure all sell far more shirts thna us.

We've got a genuine deal with the biggest sportswear brand in the world, we should be happy we've got them. Even if we have to wait a bit for the kits. I'd much prefer that than to have a Le Coq Sportif, Puma or Macron like some of our divisional rivals.

I agree the Spurs home shirt this season is very smart. But look at their away kits and their 3 shirts last year.

All fucking shite. This one is very much a one off.

The Umbro kits are nice, but everyone is getting the same 'tailored by Umbro' range where they just strip the shirt down to the basics. Again I don't mind it (the Forest kit is well smart), but we've had that pretty much the last two seasons and people moaned then. We get a genuine Villa design from the biggest sportswear brand in the world. It ain't that bad!

That's the thing though, I can't see it as a genuine Villa design when it's pretty much exactly the same as the (forgive me, I forgot the name of the club) Rens FC (?) kit. Even down to the checks on the socks! It's not that bad a kit, but it's the deal with Nike that I'm questioning.

The other thing, minor but I had held out hope for something, was that as someone on this site mentioned this is our 100th year in the top flight, so, I'd hoped Nike would maybe do something towards that, but I don't think they have. As I said, that's just a personal one really.

That said, Spurs can't get their shirts for sale until September.

We moan, but it appears that there are other clubs being held back by their shirt producers.

I never uy the shirt, but I think (economically speaking) the club is missing out by not being able to sell early on.
