Let's get Ireland, Flamini, Hleb and Robbie Keane in.

We might play some good football then.

Apart from Keane

Yeah

What, like a midfield that can dominate teams at home and create chances, playing a modicum of attractive football into the bargain? Sounds good to me...

Judging by the General's and other's comments last night i'm guessing big wage earners are off the menu so i'd forget flamini at least till we get rid of all the deadwood.

First off I am not a big Downing fan, but its only fair to give him a full season.

Flemini for £4mill sounds like a good deal, as long as he treats this as a chance to redeem his career, is commited to the course and doesn't just see it as a way out of a poor setup, I think he could really add to our side.

24 Mill, plus Ireland is the only deal we should accept.  The sad thing is that we might have to let Milner go to be ale to bring anyone else in.

In short, it would be best for us to keep him, but if he does have to go, then say Keane, Flemini and Irland and a bit of cover at full-back then I would take that.

I don't know why but i've a feeling Keane would do very well for us. Just a gut feeling that's all.

well i read it as the wage bill is too high now and if you look at it as a percentage of our turnover, it is.  So selling milner aint going to make much difference to the wage bill. And I do worry that we're having to sell one of our more realistically waged players to cover all the ludicrously paid reserves. Fuck me, i actually thought i dreamt that Heskey was our top earner this morning.

I read the General's comments as being that if the manager want's new  players, others (Sidwell, NRC etc) will have to make way to enable us to keep the wage bill at a manageable level. It makes sense to me.

I get the feeling we'll get Ireland and about 10m for Milner, invest most of that in Keane, and then spend whats left and the cash from the sale of Sidwell et al to fund a bid for McGeady.  Not saying thats what we should do mind..

If you read it again Greg, you'll see the issue is the money that is being spent on players who are not contributing and that that is something that is reviewed every couple of years. That's perfectly backed up by the players who have been made 'available' this summer - NRC, Sidwell, Beye, Shorey, Luke Young, Curtis Davies. All players who were not first team regular starters last season.

A handful of others who would have been on a decent senior salary have been released: Marshall, Harewood, Bouma. Another - Gardner - was sold in January.

So it's an entirely sensible exercise, in my view. Milner is a separate case which has nothing to do with wages and cutting back on the salary bill.

As for Keane I think the days are gone where he might get a team around twenty goals a season, plus the once lightling like pace to open defences up might not be quite there anymore, however I do think that he has more of pouchers instinct and is a more national finisher than any of our other forwards.  To me a fit Keane getting around fifeteen goals, and Gabby or maybe Carew chipping in with say twelve, plus a few more from midfeld would maybe give us the extra goals we need.

I dont see the problem with Keane at all. I would be chuffed if he signed and i would be willing to bet anyone that if he is our only striker purchase then he will be our top scorer next season!

I agree its entirely sensible merv, but the players we want off the wage bill, are the players that will be hardest to shift because of their mad salaries.  i do think Milner is connected because the generals first post back was as the milner story broke and was  entirely about the need to cut back salaries

Ever since Carew kicked him into the stands at Villa Park I always thought.

Most unlike Carew.
