I disagree vs as I don't think anyone can doubt randy's spending in previous seasons but this year I don't really see us finishing above man city, Chelsea man u or arsenal this season , so I think along with spurs and Liverpool and everton we will be fighting between 5th and 8th place- in that situation maybe randy feels there's no point spending huge money to finish 5th to 8th!

He has backed mon in the past and we haven't cracked it and with citys huge outlay this summer we are probably further away now than we were 3 yrs ago.

What is desperately needed are a couple of exciting signings to lift things.

We all, or at least mostly all, had the same feelings towards Man City this time last year.  It wasn't plain sailing for them and we ended up much closer than some expected.  Who's to say it won't be the same in 2010/2011?  So with that extra little bit in our side, we may finish above them?  I don't think we can overly worry about what they do and just concentrate on putting the best side out we can.

But I agree a couple of exciting signings are always welcomed!

Sign Jenas, give him a long haired wig and get him to change his name by dead poll to Jermainho or Jenasinho.

No point.
It would be like putting bay windows on a shithouse.

Oooooh, but that would look lovely though. And a potted plant and magazine rack.

The quality of player city are going for this summer is different to a year ago , and they have Mancini who is a lot better than mark Hughes.

I think if we finish top 6 this season then mon will deserve huge credit - I would expect city this season to go very close to winning the league.

Last Summer Man City spent how much? And we didn't do too bad really considering. Don't get me wrong I think that with the money spent so far, had it maybe been invested a little better, we'd have cracked top 4, but at the same time I think we'll be in the mix again next season.

The point I was making though was that every Summer seems to be the same - rumours of no/little money to spend, no signings until mid-end July, MoN coming out with the same old "I want to strengthen" stories, one of our players linked with a big money move etc. And every Summer transfer window, at the end of it, most people look back and think it's been a good one.

Again, not much different to lots of opinions last summer.  And I think Hughes would have finished 5th with that squad also, so it remains to be seen if Mancini is better or not.

Don't get me wrong, I do think Man City are signing top players and that they'll finish higher than us next season, I'm just not certain they will and feel if we can improve the weaker areas of our own squad sufficiently we can compete with them.

I take your point john but to improve and strengthen will take a lot of money - we have a European campaign as well and the squad is not that strong now.
The departure of some players is inevitable but when a team spends £200m or more on players then it makes it very difficult for mon to compete on our budget.

In the past I have criticised many of his decisions but I think if we can finish 6th next year it will be a good achievement and hopefully we may get a cup with a bit of luck.

Maybe I've lowered my expectations somewhat but I remember the genaral saying when they took over 4 yrs ago noboby could have foreseen what would happen at man city, and I do think they will get torres too among others in the next few weeks.

I think with a bit of wheeling and dealing we can strengthen quite well without a huge net outlay, but I take your point that nothing we do will compare to spending £200m.  6th would mean finishing above some good clubs/sides so should be recognised as such, but I do not feel that is the limit of what we are/will be capable of.  For instance, look for Arsenal's position to be more vulnerable next season, especially if they sell Fabregas.

People are slagging off McGeady like they've scouted him for a living. None of us have any knowledge of whether he'd be a success in the PL or not. In fact, I can guarantee you that if he signs for someone else and does well, people will be slagging MON for letting him slip by. He's a talented, yet unproven player at PL level just like every foreign player some have been screaming for us to get. If McGeady was really the promising Van McGeady from the Dutch or Belgian league would it make any difference or just sound a little more glamorous?

I've said that I have only seen him play (on TV) a couple of times, so my opinion of him is based on what people who I know have seen a lot of him (Celtic season ticket holding friends) and they all say he is a poor mans Maloney. If we sign him I will support him, and hope that my friends are wrong, but I'm not sure they are.

I'm basing the fact that I am reluctant on us buying him based on the small amount I've seen of him and a mate who goes to rangers games. his anti-Celtic bias doesn't detract from his viewpoint that McGeady isn't, and hasn't been celtic's best player for a while and that he likes to dio the fancy things too much with not much end result. Also, he thinks he'd be too lightweight for the prem.

No, the screaming is about only buying players who've played in the PL or its more violent, less watchable version north of the border.

I've seen him on occasions and been unimpressed. Others here have seen him much more, and seem even more unimpressed.

Year on year, come transfer window, we always seem to be downscaling our ambitions and almost making excuses for some of the signings ("wait till i see what he does in the shirt" - Harewood / Knight).

It'd be nice, once maybe, to make a signing with a bit of ambition rather than "more of the same" from a predictable pool of players, because that will not be enough to move us on. At some point, we need to bring about a quality shift in our players, upwards.

No, not signing Messi, but signing players a fair bit better than the ones we already have.

I'd be stunned beyond bemusement if we signed McGeady. Money utterly wasted. We have problems in every area EXCEPT the wings, and even if we did feel the need to sign someone else for the wide areas McGeady should be right at the bottom of the list, with Daffy Duck and Nicholas Soames.

That's a good point, too.

Milner goes? We've Downing and Young to play wide, and need an option in the middle, not wide.

So maybe McGeady would be a Young replacement?
