Kris Boyd's 27 next month.

Please amend to 'surprised MON hasn't come in for him... mid 20s, scores in Scotland...'

What do the fans of other clubs think of him, oh wise one?

well the word is, he's no chris sutton

True. Actually word is that he's a bit of a lazy monster munch gobbling prick who thinks he's better than he is.

Coming to a reserve game near you, in the very near future.

On the subject of Montolivo (as we suddenly are), I've said it before, isn't he the exact kind of midfielder we need to transform our style of play? I mean, the extra through-ball, flashy flick kind of spark in the final third is all well and good, but Montolivo's the type who can dictate tempo from the middle third of the park.

Yep. One of the very few Italian players to come out of the WC with any credit. Very good on the ball and had a shot on him too, unlucky not to score a couple from distance (one corker swerved all over the place and hit the post v NZ).

As far as WC midfielders go, he's caught the eye. So have Annan and KP Boateng (Ghana), Khedira (but agree, there'll be a queue for him now), Ramires of Brazil.

Also, how bloody good has Sneijder looked? Even daring to dream we'd sign last summer now looks daft, especially after the season he's had with Inter on top of this WC.

If we'd pulled off the Sneijder signing we'd have finished fourth, injuries permitting, I have absolutely no doubt about that. I'm not normally one to focus on individuals but the extent to which he'd have solved our very specific problems would have boggled the mind.

Montolivo's hardly ungettable too, and I was very impressed by his performances last season and a bit before for Fiorentina (who have failed to qualify for Europe and have lost their figurehead manager, Cesare Prandelli, to the national team). Really clever movement, and one of those players who can play a pass with such accuracy he makes the player he's passing to move where he wants him to. Not many can do that.

I don't think we'll be in the market for top Italian internationals anytime soon.

But Khedira would probably have been in that 'good but not hugely known' bracket pre WC and might have been semi realistic at one stage.

Agree aboout KPB too, but the time to go for him would have been last Jan or pre WC at least. The price always gets ridiculously inflated if a player has even a half decent tournament.

He was injured in January and most of last season for that matter.  I may be being unfair, but he only seemed to get better when Pompey reached Wembley.

And I would have welcomed Boyd in the circumstances we got Sutton in, which was an out of window free agent as a temporary measure, but that hardly bears any relevance to our position in summer 2010.

From my recollection, he was their best player up until Christmas (he was the best midfielder on display from both clubs when Pompey came to VP in September).

That's the first game when I really took any notice of him, but he looked good in a fair few matches after that, despite being in a struggling side.

Not the kind of player you'd spend big darts on perhaps. And not the kind of signing to convince fans we mean business. But already better than Sidwell and NRC. And definitely worth a punt at the lower end of the scale (which it would have been back then).

Looking back and using Jonathan Creek-like deduction, were you talking about Jan Vennegor of Hesselink, Greg?

I still reckon we should snaffle Kallstrom on a free to replace Sidwell.
