In Carew's advantage, he's got the ability to come off the bench and make an impact by scoring. That's actually quite a rare knack. If we get a decent first choice, which may or may not be Roberto Keane, we'll be in good shape.

Carew would be a heck of a squad option IMO. It'd also suit his iffy fitness too.

Not sure on that, Carew dosen't look that bothered to me when he comes off the bench, takes ages to getting into the game.

I assume most of his goals last season came when he started, how many did he score coming off the bench?

It may only be in comparison to Heskey, but Carew normally looks dangerous when he comes on, even if he's not really putting the yards in, there's a chance something will happen becaue he wins most o his aerial duels. Off the top of my head I can think of goal he scored against Spurs and Stoke of the bench in recent seasons. Probably a few more thre somewhere.

I actually think that Heskey made a bigger as a substitute than Carew tended to. He created a focal point and worked harder to change the game than Carew. Personally, I'd like the 4-3-3 with Keane, Heskey, the Fonz and even Weimann as different types of impact subs (of course, that's the ultimate first-team - we'd have some squad rotation in my happy dream world).

Upon inspection, Everton, Hull, Stoke, Blackburn in the FA Cup last season. By the turn of the year he'd won his place back from Heskey in anycase.

The difference with Carew is when/if he comes on you feel as though he could change the game. Not sure i feel the same about Heskey.

No me neither. I'd be confident, if for arguments sake, Carew plays a whole season on the bench and gets 30, 30 min appearences, he'd still hit double figures. He struggled early part of last season with injuries, and getting a starting berth ahead of the next to useless Heskey, but still netted 17 times, including 4 coming on as a replacement for Heskey.

With Heskey I'd be confident he'd fall over a lot, and perhaps hold the ball up and lay it back to a midfielder half a dozen times. Maybe if lucky, he'll net 1 or 2.

When Heskey comes on there is generally no (or very few) boos. But no cheers either. And barely a round of applause.

Very surreal.

I can't think of many players who generate that type of reaction. Or lack of, as the case may be.

It's more abject disappointment. He's a tryer, so you can't really boo him too much for that, but he's also bobbins, so there's little reason to cheer.

When his number comes up, it's almost like a chorus of mumbling groans, along the lines of "for fuck sake!"

Yeah, my Dad basically said this at the last game against Blackburn. Basically the crowd knows Heskey comes on and nothing will happen and errrr it dosen't!

As an aside, I see Cahill is being linked with Manure for 15m. While I can't quite see it happening, I do hope we put in a decent sell on clause in the deal.

I hope so too, but doubt it. We got decent money for him at the time. Still wish we'd kept him though.

Having spent the last 20-30 minutes reading over what I missed in here I'm most disappointed that I will never get that time back.

Can't we have some humour, some merriment even a song rather than Greg getting his arse handed to him in an argument for the 1023rd time or more of those links to Keane?

Hell I'd even take one of those links to Portugese rightback No Juan or South Korean superstar Fuk All.

Alternatively, any random sightings of world class players within the 11C route anyone?

Leeg was looking for songs - he said last year's transfer thread was more interesting. He's right and I was the Billy Bass Tardo that probably provided the banging tunes. Sorry for the silence recently. I've been polishing my tip.

To the tune of 'When the saints go marching in':

Oh, when Roy Keane
Plays for the Town
Oh, when Roy Keane
Stands up, sits down
I want to be by the Humber
Oh, when Roy Keane
Does a big brown

Oh, Robbie Keane
Plays for the Spurs
Oh, Robbie Keane
For years and years
Is always linked with the Villa
Oh, Robbie Keane
Just bloody do one, you little stinker
