Problem is NRC isn't and never has been a specialist holding player. I'm not saying that he can't bem but I have my doubts about his positional discipline, but he thinks of himself as a box to box player.

There are certain players who are so good that it is worth changing the shape of the team to accomodate. Stephen Ireland isn't one of those.

During his first season that's what MON turned him into and it worked very well for us.  I think it's his best position as he doesn't have enough attacking ability to be the box-to-box player he fancies himself as.

Agree with the 2nd statement.

I think to be a box to box player you need to be good at everything.

NRC isn't.

Ian Taylor was.

I think Milner can be a specialist holding player but one who can also get forward too. Its adventurous I know but fuck it, why not.

I also like the option of switching to a 3 in midfield, in which case, Delph (when fit) will be a perfect partner for Milner behind Ireland. As would NRC and, just to be a bit posh, I'd get Parker in for this role too and add some cover.

Parker, Milner, Delph (2011), Reo Coker, Ireland, Petrov.
All angles covered. Job done.

Maz,

How could you miss Sidwell off that list?

I don't think we could get Joe Cole either even if we got CL Football, Ireland would be a good short, but then again if we want more of a holding man whose good on the ball I'd say Arteta or Parker.  So a three man unit of Milner, NRC and one of the two mentioned.

Yes we need a top finisher in the worse way, Gabby has been a huge let down, and Carew's coming towards the end of his career.

For Villa to move on next season we need more options in midfield and upfront.

Too often when the ball is played up to Carew/Gabby it comes straight back, so we need a player up front who holds the ball up better.Thats why i can see why we are linked to Keane/Doyle, both hold it up well, and Keane in partic is a good link player, but at £10m is far too much, for about 5/6m i would buy Keane, not sure about Doyle/CCole.

People on here have mentioned Berbatov, but at his age , and the price they will ask, how about Adebayor?.......for me , on his day as good a centre foward as you can get, apparently available, and 26?

I know he is not the most consistant, but next year we will see more of the Fonz, and with additions like Adebayor, and Keane would give us good options.

A hleb/JCole kind of player i like the look of is Delgado at LYon, no idea of his age though, and i would still buy Dorrans.

I'd like Adebeyor, regardless of his inconsistency and questionnable attitude, but he'd be a ludicrous price, and he'd also end up at a top European club. He'd have plenty of takers. When he's on it, he's world class, but sometimes he just can't be arsed.

Sadly that's a 0.0000000001% chancer.

I doubt Adebayor is available. It sounds like absolute bollocks to me. I'd still class him as their main goal threat.

However, if he was, he would be perfect for us. Even if I think he's a total twat who speaks in monotone.

Adebayor is a horrible person, he can stay at City IMO.

I like Maz's midfield suggestions, a lot.

Agreed, wouldn't mind seeing Ireland at the villa.. I think we really need to get a forward sorted before we sign any midfielders though..

Ireland is very close friends with Dunne by all accounts.

Manolev (I know nothing about him, but we appear to have been chasing him for a while).
Parker
Ireland
Dorrans/Collison
Keane

Beye, Shorey, Davies, Osbourne, Salifou NRC, Harewood, Heskey out.

I can see something like that happening.

Somebody said to me that we'd had Defour watched.
