Out of interest, if we bought a "playmaker" would we really want to leave Ash, Downing and/or Milner on the bench?  Why would we also want a holding midfielder?, Chelsea play better without Mikel, who is supposed to be one of the best?  Barry has been "turned" into one, and is annonymous these days...  I think Hart would be a super signing, and a striker that could hack it in the premiership, and hold the ball up to pressurize places up front would be a good signing.  Depends on the kitty if there is one, and wages.  Thats all I think we need to change.

Well Downing for one shouldn't be a guaranteed starter.

I'd like to see us go with a genuine holding mid to give Petrov more protection and to split the workload.

I'd also like to see someone like Rosicky come in, someone who can either play off a main forward, out wide (but not as a bog standard cross-happy winger) or attack through the centre. Someone confident enough to get on the ball and start moves going with slick one-twos. Have Ash on one flank as our genuine wide outlet, but vary the play so we're not just chucking crosses into the box all afternoon -to forwards that don't even read them anyway.

Ireland will probably go for crazy money, if he goes at all.

But Wenger might look at his resources and decide he needs something different. He has plenty of those type of players on the books, and no doubt more coming through (Merida is meant to be the next one off the conveyor belt by all accounts).  If we were to offer something approaching £10 million (the upper end of the scale for our TF deals) for Rosicky, Wenger might just bite. 29 years old, had his injury   problems in the past et.c.

Guardado is ace on FM.

Left winger.

Had to be said didn't it!!

A few games ago he was a must to sign early on. Great player on there. Only seen him once in real life and was expecting a masterclass!

I can't think of a player who has disappointed more this season than Rosicky. He would star in my 'most over-rated' XI of the season - first name on the team sheet!

I dont know about Ireland going for silly money. I think if City are as rich as people think they are, they wont be massively fussed about wringing every penny they can get for him. They didn't with Dunne.

If they do want rid, they'll just want a reasonable fee for him I should think. And whilst he is the sort of player we need, he isnt a superstar who can do anything (like Milner) he's a very tidy attacking midfielder. I wouldn't think he'll go for anything above say, £9m. Also, all our nearest competitors are well stocked for this type of player so unless he wanted to move abroad, we'd probably be in the box seat.

Agreed, he looks like a junkie and has started to play like one.

Exactly what I'd like aswell.  I'd avoid a direct playmaker as I like Milner player in that attacking role, but the above mentioned player would allow us to rest Jimmy and/or the wide players, plus giving the option of a formation switch to a 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1.  Basically, we'd have him plus Milner, Ash and Downing fighting for 3 places.

Joe Cole would be ideal!

I'd love us to get Ireland.  I think he and Milner could in time, make a very potent partnership.  Ireland has had an up and down season, but look at his stats for last season and the season before.  Loads of goals, assists, passes and importantly, tackles.

He's clearly madder than a pint of cake, but at a decent stable club like Villa I think he'd really prosper.

Ireland and Cardozo would be good signings.

More chance of Bullard and Zamora.

Meh!

I just can't see Ireland and Milner as a a pairing. I don't care what the stats say, I've seen him myself and he can't tackle. He's got a lot of talent but he's far too lightweight and lacking in pace to be part of a midfiled 2, in my opinion, and the fact that he's always played in a 3 at man City would support that.

He would have to play as part of a three, no doubt about that.

I personally don't see the issue with Ireland in a two aslong as he's got a really specialist holding player behind him.  So he couldn't play with Milner in a 2, IMO.  However, a midfield 3 of NRC (holding and protecting the back 4), Milner (box to box dynamo) and Ireland (getting forward and supporting the striker) does have a nice feel to it though!

We are crying our for a talisman number 10 to create things.  Whilst Joe Cole would be the ideal, there's absolutely no chance we'd get him.  I think it's time for our scouts to take their first trip abroad.

Our only chance would be if we finished 4th, but even then I couldn't see it happening given the money Man City are reportedly offering him.  I was just using him as an example of the type of player who could fit in all across our attacking midfield line!

Problem is NRC isn't and never has been a specialist holding player. I'm not saying that he can't bem but I have my doubts about his positional discipline, but he thinks of himself as a box to box player.

There are certain players who are so good that it is worth changing the shape of the team to accomodate. Stephen Ireland isn't one of those.
