I can only give to my experience with the pair I've got.  The heels on them are enormous, much bigger than any othe pair of trainers I've ever had.  And they're extremely light and well cushioned.

But the heels on the Nike carbon plates are extremely narrow. If you’re landing on the heel of a shoe like that for example it’s an ankle injury waiting to happen

I've just compared them to my previous pair, some New Balance Fresh Foam 1080s (which I got from a proper running shop after gait analysis) and there's about 2mm difference.  But the Nike trainer has the pointy heel bit, so to me they feel a lot more stable.  Add in that they're miles lighter, and the cushioning is top notch and they're so much better to run in.  I might not be using them to their full potential but I love running in them and would definitely get another pair.  Since I've been doing a much better warm up routine and wearing compression socks, the aches have gone now anyway.  I've got my sights on a sub 24 min 5K before the end of the year.

Risso, there are no right or wrong shoes, just ones you feel comfortable wearing.

I have been wearing Adidas Supernova's or the latest hybrid of them for twenty five odd years and wouldn't wear another shoe as they seem a perfect fit for me.

When I went to Uni about 150 years ago I got my first pair of Nike Waffle trainers ,which were very rare in those days. Compared to my old trainers they were like floating on air. Because they were so comfortable I got carried away and suddenly started pounding out 50 miles a week on the streets of Manchester. Result: I ran brilliantly for about 2 months and then got a stress fracture and was out for the rest of the season. Moral of the story was that however good your shoes are, you still need to up your training gently.

Yes I think you're right.  I've never worn any trainers that are more comfortable, and while it might all be coincidental, I'm going faster (for me) now and I ache a lot less the day after.

Well yes but sometimes it’s not as simple as that. The idea is to get a comfortable shoe that is also the right shoe. I always go for gait analysis and have got orthotics etc, so theoretically should always get roughly the right shoe. Last December I changed to a pair of other Nikes, thought they were really comfortable and felt great for about 6 weeks. But then by mid February I could barely move. I normally do about 70 miles a week and hadn’t increased my mileage or done anything different to normal. The shoe evidently wasn’t quite right. I then changed and bought a pair of Nike Infinity React for my long miles and a pair of the carbon plates for sprint reps, the first time I’d ever had different shoes for the different aspects. I would always get niggles but since doing that, I haven’t had a single niggle (I’m on my 3rd pair of the Reacts in the 9 months) and have increased my mileage from my usual distance. I’ve tried putting the old Nikes I had last year on since I changed and think ‘how could I possibly ever have run on this?.’ But I would never have thought that a year ago.

Sorry Risso, I didn’t intend my post to come across as being a criticism in any way, I just know how frustrating niggles and injuries can be. I hope you achieve all your targets!

No worries fella, I certainly didn't take it that way!  I get that it probably seems that I'm "all the gear, no idea" here, but these shoes really work for me. I've tried all sorts over the years, and these just feel right.  I'm certain that the slight niggle I was feeling the last couple of weeks was just because I'd upped my weekly miles and also my pace, without bothering to warm up and down properly.  Since I've followed Jon's tips, I'm completely niggle free and I feel like I'm flying almost. Well as much as a nealy 50 year old can do!

I never thought I'd get below sub 30 min, and then I never thought I'd get close to 25 min 5Ks, but now I want to get as close to 22 mins as I can.  Then after Christmas going to put a proper marathon training plan in place, with the intention of doing one in 2022.

I was never a runner, but really enjoy it now.  Also the increased fitness has improved my 5 aside massively.  Used to be the fattest, most unfit player on the pich, but now I'm one of a couple of us still bombing up and down the pitch at the end of the hour.

The tips, advice and encouragement on this thread have been really helpful, and dead motivating, so thanks all.

That's good to hear, next you'll be needing a percussion massage gun for recovery, I bought a cheap Chinese jobby initially to see if I liked it and if it worked, it did so I went all out and bought a Theragun Elite about 3 months ago, wouldn't be without it now.

I remeber those Nike Waffle, friends of mine got them (must have been very late 70 s or very early 80 s), they where totaly different to what had been before and they looked awesome then. Those where blue with yellow stripe.
I do have a Nordic foot; wide not slim so shoes from Italy or therabout dosent fit me but Adidas (Germany) is good and Us made and British. I do have a pair of Adidas. And a pair of Innov (UK) and I will recommend Innov if you like me like running at a path in the terrain. Innov has been a bit of a revelation for me and some of my friends running a path / terrain. I dont do asphalt cause my knees.

They have a broad serie of different types of shoes; from path/ no asphalt roads to totaly off road. Some of them can be a bitt hard on the foot so better try them out in the shop if thinking about having some.

Forgive my very weird old running shoe nostalgia, but yes , they were so cool back in the late 70s as well as being light years ahead of anything else available at the time. We got them from a wonderful man ( and ex marathon world record holder) called Ron Hill who had a sports shop in Hyde and at the time had the UK import license for Nike which was a little known niche specialist athletics brand back then. I had been wearing Adidas SL72s ( which are strangely now a fashion icon wiv da kids) and their fugly brothers the yellow and green SL76 ( anyone remember them? ) . The difference was like changing from a Corsa to a Tesla.

On a super boring roll now ....Forgot to say that for road racing I had a pair of featherweight imported Japanese shoes called Onitsuka Tigers. Another niche specialist athletics / running brand that few had heard of back then. The brand now is mega - global - it’s name ... Ascics.
But the coolest shoes I ever had was for me a very rare prize in a 10k road race, a pair of US import Brooks racing shoes. I wore them until they literally fell apart as you couldn’t get them in the UK . Happy memories.

My Garmin fenix arrived today.  Got a really good Bl*ck Fr*d*y deal on it yesterday from Am*z*n.

Trying to set up it is a bit complicated though!  All I've managed to do so far is get a fake Rolex watch face on it!

As the subject has been raised, do the runners of H&V have any recommendations for running watches ? I currently measure my efforts via Strava on my iPhone and would like to get a decent watch. I currently do about 30-35km per week at a reasonable pace for a 56 year old (around 48m for 10k). No real desire for music as I run country lanes and like to hear traffic - especially cyclists of which there are plenty - but kind of interested in heart rate / oxygen levels / other measures like sleep patterns etc as well as obviously distance and time. Any thoughts welcomed.
