Isn't throwing the ball away a bit cowardly?

A bit like a football team conceding a late penalty and kicking the ball out the ground to ensure time running out and it couldn't be taken. Leading to the introduction of the concept of injury time.

Wonder what team would behave in such a dispicable manner?

OK,

I actually took my camera with me to Yankee Stadium this time.

Pretty much because my wife only goes to the stadium like once maybe twice a year and since she doesn't know what the hell is going on, the pictures are her favorite part.

Anyway, here they are.

You can see the OLD stadium in the background of a few pics.

Looks like Matt Wieters will make his debut for the Orioles this week.

Could this be the move that turns their season around and allows them to challenge for the AL East title ?

Well............ no, of course it isn't. Baltimore would need to sign Pujols, A-Rod, Grienke and Santana to have any hope.

the problem with baseball is there is too many teams and not enough real talent.

I don't buy the "too many teams argument"

There's over 300 million people in the USA. (Add to that, the rest of North/Latin American and Japan.)

Even allowing for the females in the total, that's plenty large enough a pool to find 750 Major League calibre players

I don't know.

There are 330 million people, but the country is HUGE.  The size doesn't allow for too many big rivals.

I don't think there are enough players to have enough good teams.  Case in point, look at how bad the last place teams are every year.

We don't have a relegation of any kind, so there is no penalty for being the worst team year after year.

The Pirates are gonna be in the MLB next year no matter what.

Maybe my argument is misplaced.  Maybe it's not the players, but maybe its certain teams, that don't have ownership that wants to win.

Two years ago, Florida got more money in the luxury tax payouts than they spent on their entire payroll (this team never does too bad, but thats in SPITE of the ownership and not because of it).

You're right about the impact that having no relegation has. All teams (well maybe not Pittsburgh & Washington) set out with the aim of succeeding. However, they know that if the season starts badly they can dump contracts knowing that however bad they become they'll still be competing at the same level next year.

This is true of all professional sports in the Colonies as far as I know. You're whole concept is different to ours.

Its strange really that in a country that's the centre of capitalism, where achieving success is celebrated; that when it comes to sport, your system is, well....... communist.

The whole aim is to redistribute the wealth (through revenue sharing, luxury tax and create parity (through the draft system).

Meanwhile, Zambrano loses it big time

Nevermind, I'm sure that his calm, cool and collected manager will have a quiet word with the guy.

but I think that what you mentioned above is one of the reasons that College Football is as big as pro-football and why college basketball is twice as big as pro-basketball.

By essentially eliminating the talent pool for college baseball, pro-baseball has stayed afloat.

The BJ's (oo err missus !) slump means that the AL East has taken on a more familiar look.

Meanwhile the Rockies have removed a Hurdle

Not much of a shock there. If you ignore their incredible run at the end of the 2007 season, Clint's not been a major success.

So, Carl Pavano decided to show up this year, huh?

Also, I'm having surgery on June 15 for my shoulder (the other one if you are paying attention).

Perfect timing to go to a bunch of Yankee games right? Since I won't be working and all!  Get the full cast off on the 18th! can take a shower!
I should be all set to go, right?

WRONG!!!

Only one day game during my whole entire short term leave!  Actually only one home game I can attend at all!!!

What are the odds?!?!

Thursday June 18th Vs. The Nationals.

What did I do to deserve this!?!?!?!

At least you're guaranteed to see a victory for the Highlanders
