A lot of firepower on the bench but a very conservative line up to start.

I thought Disasi was a right sided centre half? If he can play left sided that helps a lot. Plenty to come on from the bench when defenders are tiring.

I'm guessing we're just going to try and contain them for an hour before hitting them with the big guns.

Not much pace in that starting line up.

Expected to see Rashford start, also surprised to see bogarde - but I guess Rogers back at 10 - wasnt enjoying him on the right.

Think will be a tough game - there in good form.

Will be interesting to se if that defence line up is better than lately - here is hoping. I guess Bogarde is DM with Tielemans and McGinn out right. Might be that Emery go for a defensive line up from start and firepower comes on when needed - part of plan to not use too much energy as we have two games a week.

I hope thats the game plan but my worry is that we dont really cope well with intense pressure well. If we get in to half time withoyt losing we would have  agreat chance second half with the options on the bench

Funny as a fair few thought since we can't defend Unai was just going to go all out attack and outscore them. You score two, we'll score three kind of thing. That line up says the opposite.

I'm guessing so many games in a short amount of time come into his thinking though

Rogers and Watkins will always be patched up and sent out to start. I thought both looked very tired v Chelsea. Strange selection but picked to battle.

This season we've generally been shit in the first half (except when we weren't), I think Unai likes to really come alive for the last 10-15 minutes of the game, sending everybody home happy, waxing lyrical on how brilliant we were.

Not sure if you noticed at the end of the Chelsea game but Asensio was completely and utterly knackered, it was his first full PL game and it showed. Good on him, he gave it his all but I suspect Uncle Unai is trying to give him a bit of a rest. Plus he never drops Rogers or Bodgers. ;)

There's always been something sort of plasticky, gimmicky and manufactured about Crystal Palace. I've no idea how old they are as a club, and can't be arsed to google, but they always come across as a bit of a modern era (in football terms) thing.

Even their 'big' rivalry with Brighton is laughably fake.

They tried to claim that they're a continuation of an old team called Crystal Palace, which would make them the oldest club in the world. It's utter bollocks, though.

Other than that, I've never really minded them. Apart from their annoying tendency to beat us.

I have long argued that - with the crazy minutiae now offered by tech - that the offside gap needs to be more obvious because it gives the striker no slack (the old guidance was that benefit should be given to the striker). Strikers have no margin for error any more.

Title: Re: Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Match Thread

The obvious change is Rashford on after their RB got booked but Ramsey has been our best player.

That formation is an abomination. If it was possible to look any worse at the back from the last few games we have somehow managed it. Id love to see Konsa hooked but Bogarde will be.

That goal aside Rogers has been very quiet. Tielemans is struggling too.

More importantly, the manager needs to correct some of his manifold selection errors and the players need to buck the fuck up.

It's not a clear and obvious error is it? In cricket they have umpires call where it's borderline and they stay with original decision. Any player will play on the shoulder because that's what you've learnt all your life but basically if you're half a step out of synch with the defender it's offside. It's total fucking bollocks. Basically teams have to relearn how to score.

In training, beginning to think our defence practices 'playing the ball out' more than it does defending.

I'd say his knee probably was just offside looking at those pictures. What can you do? The new semi-automatic system would have given it as off as well, most likely. The debate on the framerate of when the ball is kicked can continue.

The VAR thing is annoying but let’s not let it distract from the fact that it’s another game where we’ve shot ourselves in the foot. It is ridiculous how inept we are and switch off defensively- I keep saying there is no point trying to play in a controlled way if you get such fundamentals wrong all the time.

This. However they measure it, they decided he was offside. Move on.

Indeed. We would be much better served to use our best combination and just attack and back ourselves to score more. How many games is it in a row we’ve gone behind?!

It feels bonkers to me that a player can be offside because where he is in his stride pattern means his knee is high when the player he’s level with is in a different part of his own stride pattern and has a straight leg.

Bonkers. Anything to cancel out a goal….

That's not how it works. Their goal our player at the top is clearly playing them on. Our one, I do think Watkin's knee is ahead of the shirt line of the Palace player, so he's off. I'm not sure why people are going so crazy about it, it's just a really tight offside. I can't wait for semi-automatic offsides to come in and you'll still see these happen because it just is what it is.

General play we are far superior but they have had two clear chances apart from the goal. They have two very speedy forwards that are causing is trouble, unlucky with the offside but shit happens and it probably was as i think was theirs but we didn't see any lines for that one. Martinez stop fking aornd at the edge of the box it just brings added pressure to a very fragile defence.

I like the theory of our approach for the first half with the obvious intention being to bring on the Calvary at halftime/into the second half. But it ignores the reality of the fact that we cannot defend adequately for the last year or so and need to score 2 goals to have a chance of winning a game. So we may as well just go for it from the start.

Martinez was poor first the goal but made a great save not long after.

I really don’t think Watkins was offside and it was cr*p decision.

For their goal, I appreciate this will annoy Jane, but what the actual fuck was Konsa doing?  It really is shit defending.  Just not tight enough.  Lovely finish from Mateta but come on, utter garbage defending.

Disasi more at fault, was beaten twice. Cracking finish but was given far too much space.

Thats not a pen for me. Just dopey play from ramsey
Bollocks - Ramsey got caught

Na ramsey  kicked the ground thats not a pen for me

Because munoz clipped him and put him off his stride
Exactly he catches his foot it’s a penalty

It’s definitely a penalty. We’ve seen them given on a number of occasions but yet again we have to put up with incompetent and inconsistent officials

It's the fact that they are having a shit season at home and we go and play a formation that they are good at, we are no experts at it, hardly surprising we are getting beaten.  We have played into their hands and yet again shown the benevolent side of the club by allowing them the three points when they have been crap at home.  Not enough clean sheets, not enough away wins, yet again we concede two or more in a game.  I am losing faith, despite the injuries.

The defence has been shit in the league all season regardless of who was in defence and goal.

With players missing.

Emery having a nightmare tonight. What is our setup at the back...Bailey kind of RWB but not really. Three centre backs marking nobody and Digne lost, utterly lost on left.

Totally agree. Tactics all wrong by Emery.

As soon as I saw we were playing 3/5 at the back I knew the game was lost. It's a desperate measure to try and improve a defence by adding players rather than correcting mistakes

We don't have a CDM available though. I think he was trying to find a solution to that problem and threw off our balance a bit. Hopefully this is a wake-up call for Friday.

This fixture build up is absolute bull.

We could have just played Bogarde there. I think from what he's shown that it's probably his best position.

Bogarde has been horribly out of his depth tonight. But what was possibly going through Emery's head that he landed on playing him right of a 3!

Sometimes Konsa is great. But if everything isn’t ok he won’t be the one to take ownership. He’ll point and blame others.

But I’d say tonight is on the coaching staff. The formation is all over the shop.

Can we stop with the 3 at the back - if conceeded 4 against spurs and 3 against palace and scored 1 - its probably not the way to go.

Really fucked off with this - sums are season up - 1 step forward 2 back.  Same all season.  Too difficult for us to score, to easy for us conceed

Just as a question, but how did Newcastle do last season? They were mid-table(ish) if I recall?

The pressure of the additional games has brought injuries and fatigue.

I don’t think it addresses the fact that we’re as frail as a pair of paper pants that they use for surgery - even full strength, we still messed up a lot of defensive things.

It needs changing next season though. Simply not good enough this season.

And as I write this, I see a 4th has gone in.

Pathetic.

Mystic Meg (is she still a thing?) says that we’ll concede from Cardiff’s first real attempt at goal on Friday. It’ll be from a player in need of a pick me up or on a goal drought. Konsa will point at something at the same time this happens. We’ll need at least 2 goals to win and if Bailey is playing, he’ll do the square root of f*ck all.

Uni really got this wrong tonight. Thought we were very unlucky to be down at half time. Got a deserved equaliser. However Olsen coming on, the Bailey sub seemed to really unsettle us. Why wasn't Malen put on? All weird. Yet once again our defending has been so so poor it's almost criminal.

Still think VAR is bollocks but this defensive collapse is bigger bollocks. Is it missing Kamara to protect them? But that means they're not good enough. We definitely seem calmer when Mings is fit enough to play but that's not that often these days.

I think we’ve been hanging on for a while now with the odd result to keep us going. Injuries and a heavy European commitment are taking its toll. Let’s hope we get some back quickly otherwise we could struggle badly.

COULD struggle?

Bailey at RB at fault
I couldn't work that substitution out: what was the point of it?

Selling Duran and replacing him with two players who've barely played all season and aren't even match fit looks really clever now doesn't it.......
You mean the new lad who scored two on Saturday and the other new lad who set both up…gotcha

Juggling the team round to play five games in two weeks does not help us.  This is our fourth game in that sequence, Palace have had three games - including a lovely week's break - in the same period.

Bailey coming on HT was the bit that tipped the balance firmly away from us.

Was Garcia injured?

Probably put in a transfer request. Can't say I blame him.

This is disappointing not a struggle, yet.
So many games in such little time with a lot of the same players is killing us.
I don’t think we’ll be having this trouble next season.

So many things wrong with Villa, both wing backs are crap sorry but they are. we had one shot on goal all day against a club with one of the worst home records this season. Their second was us pissing around in our defence, how many times have we seen that this season.
For once our subs added nothing, They man marked JM who tried to do too much and got caught out. The biggest difference was they played fast direct football we pissed around tip tapping it to each other. Olson coming out for the second half just summed up the day.

But at least we were doing our bit to help our Merseyside friends avoid a fixture build up screwing up their season.

Garcia has just arrived and, after playing in Spanish second division, is adjusting to the Premier league. He has been excellent so far and far from crap.
