Title: Aston Villa v Forest Post Match Thread.

I blame that on the chaotic start to the match thread.  Get in!

Massive result in the end. I just really hope Pau coming off is precautionary or illness, we cannot afford to lose him again.

First half should have seen us score at least another couple and then not have to endure the subsequent nonsense.

A deeply odd game, with a very strange final eleven in the pitch, but a win with Man Utd losing at home to Fulham is a tidy day's work.

In complete control apart from the kamikaze 10 minutes either side of HT. Fair play to Chambers, played well back there.

In the pre-match I did state Forest seem to have the habit of scoring 2 goals recently so we needed to outscore them. Luckily they have the habit of letting them in as well.

But todays match will not mean much in the long term is Pau is out for any meaningful time.

I really hope Pau is OK, though on that evidence maybe Chambers should come in for Cash, who didn't seem aware that we play an offside trap on three distinct occasions, including the second goal.

Mad 10 mins either side of HT, that was an impressive performance.

I really hope Torres isn't injured for weeks again.  He's our most important player, Watkins aside.

I had to leave just before the third goal and we looked completely in control of that game. There was one moved when we had the ball for around five minutes and Bailey nearly put the ball through the keepers legs. It was a perfect summary of the football Emery wants.

Then I got to where I had to be and it’s suddenly 3-2. WTF? What happened?

Corner in the last min of first half added time is dealt with as well as the Manure one, even down to Watkins (and Lenglet?) playing him onside from 3 yards out.

Then we lose Torres so Chambers is on. One midfielder loses the ball up the pitch, and even though the players slips, Luiz and Moreno forget they can play the ball and contrive to give it Origi who passes to their striker in the box, played on by Cash.

Ignoring individual performances for a second, there were some superb goals today. The genius of Bailey for the Watkins tap in. The coolness of Ramsey for the lay off for Dougie. The power of Dougie's header - where did that come from? Finally, at first I thought it was a deflection but watching it again, it looks like Watkins dinked the ball over the keeper to set up Bailey. That was one serious bit of skill.

Well that was a thoroughly pleasant afternoons football. Controlled the game and apart from a couple of sloppy bits of play we were superb. The flow and passing of our game to pick off Forests press was superb. On the train back to Macc with a big grin on my face.

There’s been times in my Villa supporting life where we’ve played good football and reached peaks and pinnacles that were great but the last 18 months has seen us play consistently high level football the likes of which we haven’t seen since god knows when.

Forza Unai and this team. UTV.

You know what. We have a couple of weaknesses. We do switch off occasionally and we do concede the odd sloppy goal. Our strengths are that we always have goals in us from multiple players and we can really boss a game if we take the lead.

Our weaknesses can be straightened out through coaching and, if they are, who would bet against us actually going for a title next season?

Great to see Luiz score two but he does switch-off and gets dispossessed a few times a game when he's seemingly in control of the ball. Kamara has that in him too. McGinn, who is less technically gifted than either, has better match-smarts and is usually far less sloppy in possession. Probably helps to have a padded arse. But that slight lack of anticipation of a challenge from an opponent is arguably the one thing Luiz is missing from being a top-class midfielder (and maybe half a yard more pace).

What a mad game that was. For 45 minutes we cut through Forest at will and looked like we would score every time we attacked. Their goal before half-time seemed like a consolation even then.

However, their goal and the removal of Torres at h-t seemed to change the dynamic and the first 10 minutes of the second half was a nightmare with Forest attacking players running onto through balls without being tracked.

In the end the 4th goal killed them but they had a great chance at 3-2 which would have made for a very, very nervy last 30 minutes or so.

Our attacking play was scintillating but we do give teams a chance.

Man Utd losing is just perfect too.

John McGinn my MOM. Great goals from Doug but thought he was sloppy multiple times at the start of the second half which could really have cost us. Bailey and Watkins both excellent.

Fair play to Chambers. It couldn't have been easy to come in from the deep freeze like that but he didn't seem fazed, kept it simple and did well.

Up the mighty Villa!

Good result today.. breathing space between us and Spuds/United.
Not too fussed about the 2 goals, we were  playing with our third choice centre back pairing at the end, and with no Bouba, a little less protection.
Shoutouts for Leon, Ollie and Tielemans who I thought all ran their socks off. Dougie’s two goals hid what was a fairly lacklustre performance from him imo…. Got caught on the ball far too many times.
Credit to the team though. Ravaged by injuries, but ploughing on regardless…. They all seem to be grinding out a bit of form.

56 goals in just 26 games.

The last time we had a season with a better than 2 goals per game average was 1959/60 promotion back to Division One. 89 goals in 42 games. Gerry Hitchens, 11-1 against Charlton etc.

https://www.11v11.com/teams/aston-villa/tab/matches/season/1960/

The last time we bettered 2 goals per game in the top division was 92 in 42 games in 1932/33.

A great performance with a silly few minutes in between. When we start fast teams struggle to live with us. Defensively, 2 really poor goals to give away again but it’s 3 points and we are looking good.
McGinn stepped up, especially in the second half. He took control of the midfield and drove us forward like a proper captain when we were struggling a bit.

RIP, Pau, taken so young.

Puts paella cooking into perspective. :(

Bar a mad 10 minutes where I think their ineptitude had lulled us into slumber, that was excellent.

I felt the midfield were so mobile today in pulling Forrst out of shape, despite ostensibly on paper being out numbered.

Bailey is unplayable at present. Dougie and McGinn, a few misplaced passes aside, bossed it.

Only slight grumble would be the collective ocassional dpey decision making from Cash and Moreno, but by and large, that was a very dominant and impressive performance.

A good win particularly as we are still bringing players up to full pace with Tielemans much better today, Ramsey getting sharper, Torres getting minutes under his belt (crossed fingers).  Rogers getting a few minutes too.

What a season this is turning into.
To think that when we started the second half we had centre back choices 5 and 6 on the pitch and as a team we negotiated what could have been a difficult second 45 minutes.
I thoroughly enjoyed the last quarter as I thought we were so professional in our possession and game management.
And no VAR!

McGinn was very solid in the second half I thought. He helped us calm down after losing the two goals and then to close things out.

Strange game in many ways and some strange performances.

Cash did some very good work with his passing and crossing. And equally, some awful play with his defensive line and finishing.

Moreno and Ramsey the same with lurches between very good and bad.

Ollie was excellent yet again.

Likewise McGinn and Dougie.

Bailey absolutely superb. What a player he is now consistently showing he is week in week in. Some fantastic passing.

Torres probably (hopefully) just a precaution.

I think his chance at Bramall Lane was easier but in both games he's coming on cold and full of nerves and adrenaline. Once he gets more minutes, he'll be calmer in those situations. Great that he's already taking-up dangerous positions.

There is a lot to love about this team. We are all preconditioned from past experiences to expect Villa teams to fall apart and after the three consecutive home defeats combined with Bouba's injury, it felt like that would happen again. But Unai's team is made of better stuff.

Much of the attacking play yesterday, epitomised by the second goal, shows just how well drilled we are now. No pass wasted, no pot shots from hopeful positions (we ain't going to see many long range thunderbastards under the king), just precise play designed to open up the best percentage chance of scoring. Ramsey returning to form has made a big difference too.

Bailey was sensational. Looks like him, Doug and possibly McGinn can all make double figures in the league. Having so many do that is unheard of in the last thirty years.

I'm giving a shout-out to Ramsey: apart from the horrible cross-field pass in the first half, his movement and vision were excellent yesterday - I love that he knows how he's going to shift the ball before he's received it, and he plays the game so simply. I thought he was one reason Watkins got the space he got yesterday.
Which is not to say I didn't appreciate the other midfield contributions - all were good!
It was a shame Chambers had to come on, really: he slowed the game down somewhat and is himself rather slow!

Still buzzing after yesterday. It was my 8 y.o. boy's first game at Villa. There was 5 of us all over from Ireland, me and my buddy from Cork with his 13 y.o. daughter and my eldest lad (13) with us too. Tom (8) pronounced his love for Emi Martinez before the game and managed to get a glove off him leaving the pitch! He's still grinning from ear to ear. Imagine getting a souvenir of your first visit to VP from the World's no.1 keeper! The Irish contingent was massive yesterday - big Irish heads and broad accents everywhere! Exactly, post match comments about Tielemans after the defeats to Chelsea and Newcastle weren't exactly positive. If we dominate possession he can be very effective but without it he's a liability. To give him credit he was involved in the turnover that led to Bailey's goal. These are the games he needs to make an impression on, Luton away he needs to deliver again.

I'd give McGinn huge credit in showing his versatility yet again this season. Ramsey coming back to form is another bonus.

Still a bit rough around the edges compared to our early season form, but a huge improvement, and you can forgive the goals conceded seeing as we finished the match with possibly our last choice CB pairing (*though I thought BOTH played remarkably well yesterday).

With that solid core in defence/defensive midfield missing, I worry what will happen when we come up against the likes of City and Arsenal next time around, but I think we just need to go all out to win all the other games and that should see us through - Spurs in a couple of weeks is massive now. Win that and I can't see either them or United catching us.

Luiz is on 9 goals now for this season, Bailey is on 8. Quite possible we end up with 3 players in double figures this season. McGinn is even on 6!

It's exactly what was said we needed when people were questioning if Watkins was good enough to lead the team. Last season Luiz finished on 6, and there was a handful of goals from other players. This season everyone bar Lenglet has scored a goal in one competition or another. (He had one ruled out and was inches from scoring Luiz's second one yesterday)

We've already got 5 more goals than we had for the entirety of last season.

Few ocassions when JJ was able to turn centrally into space, largely because of the good positional movement and passing from Torres, McGinn and Dougie, and he was able to pick up a gallop. He's starting to flicker back into that devastating ball carrier that he can be.

If he can be hitting form now, then we'll be much more likely to get the ~6 wins from the last 12 we need. Man United will.need to win 3 more games than us, so if we hit the bare minimum of 6, they need 9.

The first 30 minutes yesterday, we’re up there with the Brighton and West Ham games, in that we simply tore a team not as good as us apart.

The first goal for them was soft, but even then i wasn't concerned. I do think losing Torres did wobble us though and I don’t think the second goal or the chances for Elanga and Yates, happen if he’s on the pitch.

I found myself comparing what Chambers was doing with what Pau would have done, especially with a couple of long aimless balls he played. Its probably an unfair comparison. MOTD were raving about John Stones, he’s a top player, but Torres is better. Chambers seems a good lad and ended up getting through the second half, but it does feel like getting through is exactly what we’ll be doing defensively if we have to stick with the Chambers Lenglet partnership for a few games. Luton test everyone at Kenilworth Road and I really don't fancy that centre back pairing against Son etc in a couple of weeks.

Other than that, McGinn was outstanding, Luiz largely very good, Ramsey had a great first half but faded in the second, but he’s nearly there.
And then there’s Bailey. All my favourite Villa sides have had a brilliant winger, the early 80s with Morley then Walters, Daley in Taylors nearly champions in 89-90 and again in Rons 92-93 team and Little’s 95-96 team, Young in the O’Neil years. Bailey is so exciting to watch, the anticipation in the crowd when he gets the ball, its electric. His style is also interesting, he constantly looks like he’s about to fall over, but somehow shifts he’s body round. A joy to watch.

When you’ve got a stand in defence you need your midfield and forwards to to the business so they overcome that weakness like we did yesterday
Don’t forget we were playing a relegation threatened team who aren’t that great but still managed to score twice past us,  but because we were so dominant in other areas it didn’t matter

Hopefully be the same next week away at Luton

Anyway I shouted, quite loudly, "right, now open your fucking legs!" I don't think I've ever used that phrase before. My wife, in the next room, thought I was talking to her.

Enjoyed finally getting to watch it back last night. It says something when you could pick any one of a half a dozen players as MOTM and make a fine case for any of them.

You get setbacks in any season and mentioned elsewhere in the thread, we’re conditioned to the setback being the end. This team and our problem solver of a manger are different though and the way they continue to roll with the punches and adapt is so impressive.

No the WiFi just doesn't work. In this day and age it's just ridiculous and unfortunately it is just one of several stadium shortcomings.

Fortunately the football has been excellent this season and yesterday's first half performance was one of the most consistently fluent I had seen this season.

The last 2 home matches my brother has not been able to attend so, has given ticket back to Villa to sell. Surprise, surprise, no takers. Would love to know why we seem to be the only club that no longer give out our attendances.
Another whinge, can anyone else get onto the Villa match day Wi-Fi? I certainly can’t, it’s not fit for purpose.
They do not bother with the resale of ST tickets whilst there are any other seats available including those held back for the TerraceView and Lower Grounds.

There was a point in the second half where he received the ball on the halfway line. I'm not really a shouter when watching the game on a laptop with headphones in, in my Bulgarian bedroom. Anyway I shouted, quite loudly, "right, now open your fucking legs!" I don't think I've ever used that phrase before. My wife, in the next room, thought I was talking to her.

Safe to say that neither Ramsey nor my wife, opened their legs on that occasion.

Me and the wife started watching Sex Education last night with Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield. That could well of been one of the scenes!

Not that I want to focus on negatives after a good win, but watching their first goal back, we completely switched off for that one.  Considering the box is so crowded, no-one got near the two Forest players who touched the ball.

I did think at the time from my view behind the goal and then.watching it back, that the ball actually might have gone out of play from that corner.

I wonder if there is some negative psychology at play at the moment while defending corners. I must admit I felt Man Utd were going to score when they did and ever since I’ve felt we are vulnerable on every corner.

Wifi access points have limits to the amount of connections. Looking at between 128 and 1024 per AP depending on the ages of the boxes. I do wonder where they install them as well. Stadium roofs would be good for the ones at the very top at the stand but 20 metres maximum so the ones lower down will struggle. And if on the concourses lower down, the concrete stands might cause issues. Then anyone lucky to get on will be sharing the internet with the other few thousand lucky ones so speeds might be a problem. It is the same reasons the direct internet and even calling facilities of mobile phones might have issues due to the amount connecting to the limited aerials around those areas.

It’s OK but sometimes it’s good to keep up with other scores.
Also - when I am on out of hours duty for work, I could go to the game and still pick up a call, but now I have to miss the game completely because my phone wouldn’t ring!
We’ve also had issues trying to meet up after the game with friends or family in different stands when we had a misunderstanding over a meeting place.

We don't have many players that are strong in the air. That includes both centre backs yesterday. Look at our full backs, both CMs, no height in the team really. Seemed like it was Ramsey who was asleep for that second ball yesterday and let the goalscorer run off the back of him.

Luton will be trying similar tactics so we do need to organise ourselves better for those second balls as I don't see us winning many headers.

It said 42,789 on Sky yesterday, which if correct was the biggest crowd of the season. From personal experience, I know that that three people numbered about 37,000 on the waiting list were there. My Mrs couldn't make either of the last 2 games & sold her ticket back both times. Her ticket went within minutes on Friday. When I checked on Saturday morning there were 3 or 4 individual seats available in the the whole ground.

You'll probably find every game in the PL has individual seats that don't get sold. How do you know we're the only ground that doesn't give the attendance?

Other than at the start of halftime, when everyone tries to connect, I have no problem connecting to the Vodafone network.

Might be, especially with 5G being the thing now. I remember when 4G was being rolled out and "tested" in Birmingham City Centre by EE, getting a 3G signal was suddenly awful. I suspect they diverted bandwidth from one to the other to enable the big speeds they were bragging about (and also to make people go "I need a new phone on 4G".

But it could also be your supplier. As mentioned EE are the network partners at Villa so they might have added more capacity, both wifi and Mobile aerials where others do not have them so close.

You’re not going to get any ‘WiFi’ coverage unless you have access to one of the club’s networks, which you almost certainly won’t.

Mobile data coverage is not a problem the club can fix alone, it is for the mobile networks. An infrastructure (masts, basically) that handles the normal usage of the locals of Aston  fine all of a sudden finds itself handling the normal load plus an extra 45,000 people (crowd / workforce / transport people etc etc) via a limited number of masts in a tiny, highly concentrated area. The result is the network is swamped and you’ll find it way harder to get signal - voice or data.

There isn’t any incentive for Villa to provide free WiFi and even if they did, unless it was a hugely powered infrastructure it’d struggle in any case, and there isn’t really any incentive for the phone companies to address a highly localised problem that only exists for about 80 hours a year.

Strange game where for 95% of it, we were so much better than them and then had a mini panic.

It seemed to take us 5-10 minutes to work out what to do second half as Forest put Gibbs White and Origi man-marking McGinn and Luiz and stopped our centre backs from playing their preferred first pass.  I think Emery managed to get Chambers and Lenglet over at a break in play and told them to carry the ball to commit them as we had no platform for that short time. Chambers had one moment where he just waltzed through them.

The panic didn't last long and glad Emery got the solution to them quickly. Other than that, it was dominant

Our goal against Arsenal is one of the goals of the season - like a sped-up, more skilful/technical version of Doug's second against Forest but against far superior opponents. But it never got a look-in for Goal of the Month.

As it stands I'd have those 2 and the watkins one against Sheff Utd (with the Dougie assist) as our 3 best this season.

For those who haven’t seen it on X. Be careful, it’s absolute filth:

Do goal kicks not have to clear the area anymore? Seems Lenglet (or Torres) took it to Martinez at the start of the build up.

Oli's flick header against Bournemouth should be in there too.

I'm trying to think of howitzers and thundercunts we've scored this season. Duran against Palace and Tielemans at Bramall Lane come to mind (did Diaby score a belter at some stage?) but generally speaking, our goals are the result of controlled play.

I remember marvelling at the build-up for Cash's first at Turf Moor early on in the season, it gave me a really good feeling about 2023/24. After that goal, I remember saying to my Dad, a Gooner, "This is how you've watched Arsenal score goals for years. Now it's my f-ing time!"

A change in 2019 apparently. Never spotted it before.

This rule-change must have had an impact on how everyone now plays out from the back. The new way of playing really came to the fore behind closed-doors in 2020/21, giving time for it to bed-in with defenders not having to face the audible wrath of fans shouting at them too boot it down the park.

Every player receiving, being in control and passing the ball. I'll bet there aren't many teams to have done similar this season.

Tielemans didn't touch it.

Yep, he didn't half.

Also love that Doug's first touch of the ball in this move was on the edge of our own box. His second was to twat it into the bottom corner.

I thought it was a cracking goal when seeing it live but didn't realise all eleven had touched the ball. It would definitely get a bit more fanfare if it was Man City or Liverpool. But we know and that's all that really matters.

You're right. You'd think after watching it at least ten times I'd have noticed. Now I'm starting to question myself and whether Tielemans wasn't as invisible for most of the match as I first thought. He did have a good final 5 minutes before being subbed but I don't recall him doing much else (again) before it.

I thought he just kept things ticking along ver, quietly effective I’d say, without the umph of McGinn, or floating brilliance of Dougie

Yep. Quietly effective. It's the same all our midfielders, when they're not being explosive* they're still pulling their weight and simply going about their business.
*He was pretty explosive for Bailey's goal, following Watkins' lead in the press.

Two things I really love about that goal. When Bailey receives the ball with his back to the touchline he has an easy option. A short pass to Tielemans but he ignores that and chops another much more difficult pass to Cash which opens Forest right up. The second thing I love is Dougie's involvement. He touches the ball twice. The first touch is when he receives the ball on the edge of our 18 yard box. His second touch is inside their 18 yard box when he drills the ball into the corner of the net. Two sublime moments of football.

I love that goal. The only problem I have with it is the same thing I thought as I watched it from the stand. How clumsy does Cash look in the box? I sat there thinking, well this ain't going anywhere...

The reality is that I am getting used to how good Bailey is in the box on that side, and they're night and day. Cash looks like a schoolboy fumbling to undo a bra compared to Bailey looking like the Fonz clicking his fingers.

It's not a criticism of Cash, it's just making me appreciate just what we have in Bailey.

To be fair though, have you seen how out of sorts Bailey looks in our box?! :)

I think Cash has been great since Konsa's injury. We look superb on our right side, where the majority of chances seem to come from. Cash and Bailey are a great partnership, especially against the 'lesser' teams.

I agree 100%, Cash has been good recently.  I think it’s obvious in the long term that Unai will want to upgrade him with a player who is more comfortable with the ball as Cash’s touch isn’t the greatest but he is 100% every game and a valuable team player.

Yeah, in the match thread I asked if anyone counted the passes as it had gone from a goal kick and backwards and forwards - it seemed like about fifty passes at the time!
