Title: Aston Villa vs Hibs - UECL 2nd leg - pre match thread - Thursday 8pm
Post by: Toronto Villa on August 27, 2023, 09:09:17 PM
We go again. Games coming thick and fast. Back to Villa Park for the 2nd leg of tie that’s over. Hoping to see a few of the squad get a run out. Expect starts for Tielemans, Zaniolo, Bailey, Chambers maybe even Bert. Olsen to continue in goal. I’ll go 3-0.

I think I posted twice before the season started about how we could basically field 2 completely different starting 11s between matches, but unfortunately I don't think that's the case anymore.

We should still probably be resting some players with the subs from the last few games starting. The likes of Tielemans, Duran, maybe even Traore starting. Can we change much in defence at the moment? Maybe give Chambers a run out. I thought Kellyman looked good in preseason, he's scored a few for the U21s too, why not give him a go. If we don't want to end up with another bunch of 22 year olds we have to sell, this game seems like the perfect time to blood someone.

Completely new outfield line up for me. Whether that will be enough to win the match on the night I don't know but it will be enough to win the tie I'm sure.

Is Zaniolo available for this? I don’t know the registration rules.

If so, I’d start Bailey Zaniolo and Durán

Tielemans should get a start. Maybe Chambers in.

Should be a straight forward win. 3-0.

Zaniolo isn't available until the group stage.

Personally I'd be looking at getting 3-4 kids a bit of a run out, either starting or at least coming on from the bench, it's not often you can give them a chance with so little pressure on the result.

Be nice to rest a few players with Liverpool up next.  I guess Dendonker won't be ready for this but would be good to get him some minutes.  Perhaps start with some of the kids and take them off after 65 minutes.  Revan, Kellyman to start, keep with Olsen.  Rest Kamara and McGinn, to important to risk. Duran in for Ollie and give him the full game.

It's a disgrace that we haven't full sold out within the first 5 minutes of tickets being put on sale. It's our first time in Europe for years and there are still seats available.

It will be nice to see a few of the fringe players and youngsters getting a game. Would expect to see most of Olsen, Donk, Duran, Chambers, Tielemens, Traore, Kellyman to start.  Maybe even the likes of Revan, and one of the U21 forwards on the bench.  The team will still have four or five proper first-teamers in the side, mainly as we don't have the fit players available to do anything else!

A much closer game, them playing for pride under a new manager, maybe the odd goal in it.

This is the perfect opportunity to give them at least 45 mins game time to assess where they are for a potential loan deal.

Bailey instead of Young for me but I agree otherwise. and I'd get Donk on for as much of the 2nd half as he can manage to give Doug a rest. From there if we can rest McGinn and Cash for 30mins I'd do that as well.

I'd keep Carlos and Pau together because they need to keep developing their partnership in there.

Emery will pick a fairly strong side , he will respect the opponents who will have new manager bounce plus they are bringing thousands of fans down. I'm up for another 5-0 it will be good for momentum.

Yeah, thats my thinking regarding the CB pairing too.

And agreed on Dendoncker. If he's fit enough, then maybe he gets a start for Douglas Luiz.

Gotta have Josh Feeney, Kerr Smith & Rory Wilson on the bench too. Give each of them 15-20 mins at the end of the game. They are young, but if we are looking at developing top talent earlier, then this game is perfect for them.

Maybe even give Ben Broggio a bit of match day experience instead of a third keeper. He's nowhere near ready to play first team football, but to be in & around the match day squad will help prepare him for it when he is old enough. If he gets there, obviously.

Might be a bit of overkill in academy players, but this tie is over, so its the perfect opportunity for a little extra development early on in their careers, before we send them out on loan.

We will definitely play a weaker side.

Ozzy Osborne

Tony Hancock
Sandy Richards
Bob Carolgees
Spit the dog

Apache Indian &
Mooen Ali in the double pivot

Bev Bevan
Jeff Lynne
Roy Wood

Shefali* up front.

* one for Woodhall there.

Is Nigel Kennedy injured Paulie?

Apache Indian & Mooen Ali in the double pivot is a bold move, and might just come off.

Very worried about Tony Hancock at R.B. and I fear we may get rinsed down that flank.

Well Mo can certainly spin around to replicate what McGinn offers but I think you need to find room for Woakes to swing it in from out wide as well.

I'd put David Bradley at Cb,  John Taylor DD up front, he'd be hungry like  wolf for a goal

Bring Stephen 'Tea-Towel' Duffy on with 15 minutes to go to put the icing on the cake.

Probably (I think Bev Bevan as well).

However, given that Moeen is on the list, I think this is people from Birmingham rather than Villa supporters.

Unless anyone can remember Hancock standing on the Holte

With our current injury list picking a "2nd" team is not as easy as forst thought.

Is the Donk actually alive? If so you would think he needs minutes.

Olsen - or even the next in line

Cash - as i dont think he will start vs 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'
Carlos - Change at HT for Feeney
Torres - Change at HT for Chambers
Bevan

Donk
Tielemans

Bailey
Mcginn - Change for O'Reilly
Kelliman

Duran - Change for Patterson

Flesh out the bench with
Kids
Watkins
Diaby

I would pick;-

Olsen

Cash
Carlos
Torres
Revan

Tielemans
Douglas Luiz

McGinn
Kellyman
Young

Duran
I'd be going a bit stronger.  I know it's "only" Hibernian and we're 5-0 up, but  I'd still rather send out a signal that we ain't messing about here.

Olsen

Cash
Carlos
Torres
Digne (Moreno's back soonish so don't think he needs to be rotated right now)

Donk

Traore
Tielemans
SJM

Bailey
Watkins

Bring on a few kids - thinking the likes of Tim Iroegbunam or Duran who are relatively close to the first team rather than random ones like Feeney - in the second half if we've properly killed the game off, but I'd be challenging the team to get a double-figure aggregrate score, with no goals conceded.

Back in the 1970s my mum (mom) entered and won a competition in the Evening Mail, the prize for which was a box set of three ELO albums (On the Third Day, Eldorado and Face the Music). One of the questions concerned the footballing allegiances of Bev Bevan and Jeff Lynne. It was a great prize, I still play the albums today.

The fact it is geolocked suggests there will probably be some foreign broadcaster showing it which means you’ll probably find a stream.

Or a “small river” as some posters on here refer to them in the remarkable belief that any legal firm investigating the sharing of streams online will not manage to work out said coded language.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kellyman start and maybe 1 or 2 outfield youngsters on the bench but I don’t take Emery as the type who will fill the match day squad with young players.

Also how many young players do we actually have at the moment that would be near starting with the first team? Feels like we cleared most of them out. Kellyman is, I think, the only one left who was on the US trip. He was in training with the first team this week. And was it Feeney was with them last week and on the bench for Burnley?

I mean, if there was ever a game to do it, this would be it.

I think the team below is enough to get a win.

I would keep the pairing of Carlos and Torres, only because they probably need more game time together. Other than that, why take the risk with injuries playing a strong side?

Olsen

Chambers
Carlos
Torres
Revan

Tielmanns
Dendoncker
Kellyman

Bailey
Trahore
Duran

The "match pack" on the official site says under "team news" that Emery may look to rotate his lineup "with Nicolo Zaniolo among those pushing for minutes after a strong debut at Burnley". 😬

It mentions Martinez as having missed the weekend but doesn't say whether he's fit now or not.

I don't think he'll go major changes. Just a few breathers here and there and maybe 45 minute run outs for a couple (McGinn, Konsa, Kamara). I can't see youngsters being on the field en masse until the second half and it's definitely not going tits up

Olsen

Konsa
Chambers
Torres
Revan (even this I'm not convinced he'll do)

Tielemans
Kamara
McGinn
Bailey

Traore
Duran

Subs: Marschall, Zych, Carlos, Cash, Digne, Kamara, Diaby, Watkins, Kellyman, O'Reilly, Feeney

The smallest club in the city always tries that.

I think Bully touches on a good point there but without actually highlighting it, you can have a bigger bench for this (12 I think) so it's pretty easy to load it with first teams and kids and respond accordingly during the game.

Making players travel up to Edinburgh for no real reason is different to including in the squad for a home game though and I don't think it would be a massive problems to give some of the kids 20-30mins tonight even if it weakens the U21 team, they'll learn much more from being around the first team anyway.

However, I think Smith is more than ready to face the likes of Hibernian cos he has already face Scottish Premiership teams about 10 times before he joined Villa from the age of 16.

I don't know exactly who he faced, but I know he played 10 times for Dundee United.

It's highly unlikely but not totally impossible that we mess this up and lose 6-5. I'd rather not have the embarrassment witnessed at Spurs, Chelsea and Everton this week where they had to bring on their big names because their 2nd string couldn't get the job done. I'd start as strong as possible, hopefully get another goal or two, then make changes at half time.

Tielemans and Bailey starting makes sense.

No. But its not impossible that a team with a new manager, playing for pride, against a team who could well be checked out of this tie already, could get a couple of goals early on, especially if we send out a bunch of kids, and Olsen, first half. And then things feel a bit uncomfortable and we have to bring on the bigger names to make sure we wrap it up. And like I said, that's embarrassing. I'd rather we sent out a decent 11 at the start, made 100% sure it's wrapped up, and then bring on kids, squad exiles, tea ladies, whoever.

I'd far rather lose 0-2 and have no injuries than win 3-0 and we lose a first teamer for Sunday.
